I believe that was it, and I assume you mean wallet.  Although he may have a valet stolen too. :P

And I suspect he's exaggerating a bit when he says his agent said they "hated" him; they wouldn't have invited him back if that had been true. I gathering from this that the first time he just read for them, but the second time he read with Ben? So they must've seen the potential, although I dimly remember something about they weren't sure he was interested based on his first audition.

The thing that shocks me is the negative commments at the end of that first link. Great googly moogly, some people sure be hatin'.

Yeah.  I figure, if you don't like the person or the show or whatever, just ignore it -- don't go out of your way to find places to dump your negative opinion on people who may enjoy whatever it is.  I mean, how would you like it if they dumped all over your favorites?

Regarding Martin Freeman's wallet, an interviewer some years back reported that he had said he was in a bad mood for his first Sherlock audition, because his wallet had been taken by a pickpocket on the way there.  When someone asked him about that more recently, he expressed surprise and said he didn't remember about the wallet, but did recall having been in a bad mood.  (Maybe the first interviewer made up the wallet story, maybe it was a misunderstanding, maybe Freeman simply forgot that it happened.)  At any rate, he was reported as saying that his bad mood gave them the impression that he wasn't interested in the part, so his agent phoned him and asked if he wanted to pursue it, and he assured the agent that he really was interested -- so that's when they called him back to do the reading with BC.

Damn my auto-correction! *imagine done in John's voice*

The thing with the interviews, you never know. Maybe Martin forgot, because he's read too many versions in the press. On the other hand - isn't it in the Chronicles book? I could try to dig it out. Not that it's terribly important.

It's always the same - Ben's words about the filming turned into a variety of things, from begging to attacking the fans... sorry, the viewers, because nobody knows who was filming beside those press secret agents. It's rare that you actually have an access to the source of information (in this case the recordings) and can make your own opinion.

From what I remember, Martin was in a bad mood that day and said his wallet was nicked to account for the bad mood regardless of whether that was the actual case as he has a hard time covering up that mood when he's acting.  Then the rest as previously posted.

Or something like that!

As J.P. says, unless there's a video of an interview, we have no way of knowing whether the interviewee was quoted correctly and in context.  And when an article paraphrases the person, it's even worse -- the author may have totally misunderstood them.

A colleague of me was also an artist, not popular, but selling his pictures. Once there was an interview in a local newspaper with him on occasion of an exhibition or such... an interview he never gave. AT ALL.

The whole 40 min. interview with Martin, including his "get bored easily" statement, that (why it doesn't surprise me?) was taken out of the context a bit.

Heavens, yes -- his overall point seemed to be at least 90 degrees away from what the media were making of it.  Just that too much of even a wonderful thing can be too much.

Delightful interview -- thanks for posting that, J.P.!

What/where was that interview from, btw?

The Edinburgh Festival if I recall correctly.

Festival of what?

I forget.  I just remember that RadioTimes was going to be there & there was going to be a ladies of Sherlock plus Moffat panel.

from the Sherlock articles/summaries thread:

Looks like the Festival program includes an interview with Martin Freeman and a Doctor Who Q&A with Steven Moffat.  :D

However, the Women of Sherlock panel was at the Radio Times Festival.  It's been a bit confusing!

And the Radio Times Festival's schedule also lists Mr. Moffat (at 2:30 Friday afternoon), and The Women of Sherlock (Stubbs, Brealey, Abbington, and Vertue, plus, oddly enough, Moffat again) at 5 pm on Sunday.

It was something.  Too many festivals with cool Sherlock people at them to keep them all straight.

I guess we're desperate enough by now to consider this news:

In one of the scenes I had to do his pedicure and I have to say, he has the most beautiful feet. He could be a foot model!

Release dates for Mr. Freeman's upcoming films:

Midnight of My Life (an 8-minute UK short with Freeman in the title role) -- this October (in the UK)

-- does anyone know more about this short? this is the first I've heard of it.

Captain America: Civil War (a US feature film) -- late April / early May 2016, depending on where you live

Fun House (AKA Taliban Shuffle, a US feature film) -- 2016 (currently in post-production)

Funny Cow (a UK feature film) -- still in pre-production, no release dates announced

Haven't heard of it, but would like to see it (and probably never will unless s*me*ne p*sts it on Y*uT*be....)

The Captain America one confuses me, as it sounds like Avengers III to me!

I went looking for more info on Midnight of My Life, and found this 2014 crowdfunder appeal posted on YouTube.  Clearly they met their funding goal -- and look who the director is!

According to The Mirror:

Hobbit star Martin Freeman has made a direct appeal to David Cameron to ban wild animal acts in circuses.  The dad-of-two wrote a letter to the Prime Minister urging him to honour a pledge to end the practice.

 ... and:

A survey by the Government found that 94 per cent of people backed a ban.

Mr. Cameron has described the use of animals in circuses as outdated and vowed to outlaw it. But a ban has been regularly blocked by three of his MPs.

I hope this goes through soon.  Circuses sound like fun in general, but I've never been to one (even as a child) because I don't care for the way the animals are treated.  Oddly enough, a few hours before reading that article, I was thinking about how Dumbo was actually pretty accurate in that regard.

I used to love to watch horse racing, until I saw some of the horses up close at a West Virginia track. Maybe it's different in the "majors", but those horses had a hard life; underweight, scarred, and overwrought. All for gambling. Ugh.

Horses in "the majors" may not be visibly abused, but all race horses are bred for large muscles on a lightweight frame.  That enables them to be very fast, but it's also a recipe for disaster.  They're trained to be reckless and encouraged to overreach themselves in races.  They can't generally recover from the inevitable broken legs, so many end up being "put down."

A supplier to my husband's company used to give us free tickets to Churchill Downs, but we stopped going after a couple of years because we spent most of our time worrying that a horse would be injured.  As you say, all for gambling.
