That's cool.  I know people who have been through hospice here in the US and that resource is so important.

Martina has defended her low (but not as low as mine!) score on a challenging Cumberbatch quiz as follows:

(well in my defense, it wasn't a Martin Freeman quiz :P).

Excellent point!  After trying several, I've found a pretty good Freeman quiz.  I challenge you to beat my score on this one!

Oh, and why don't the rest of you try the quiz too?

Well you gotta tell me your score first :D. Great quiz, and I got 10/11, but it didn't tell me which one I got wrong - guess it was the middle names one though, I have to admit I didn't even know he had any .

I know this won't top or even match Carol, but I managed a 9 out of 11.

I don't know whether this means that I'm highly observant or that I have no life -- but I got 100%.

However, I will admit that I wasn't entirely certain about the answer to number 6, and (last I heard) number 10 could be considered a trick question.  So I could have scored a couple points lower.

Son of a gun, it doesn't, does it?  OK then, as a public service, here are the correct answers:

1. Martin Freeman plays who in Sherlock?

John Watson

2. In Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (newest version)?

Arthur Dent

3. In Fargo?

Lester Nygaard

4. In Doctor Who?

He wasn't in it!

5. The Hobbit?

Bilbo

6. What advice does Martin give to his fans?

Follow your dreams.

7. What movie out of these is he in?

Nativity!

8. What are Martin's middle names?

John and Christopher

9. When was Martin Freeman born?

September 8

10. Who's his wife?

Amanda Abbington

11. Is he adorable?

Any answer to this question is considered correct.

I missed the movie he was in and his birthday.

ETA:  Although, I was annoyed by the wife question because it's not exactly accurate.

Right -- the question is wrong!  (At least as far as we've been told.)

The British version of cohabitation law is called Living Together as Husband and Wife, though, so I guess the term "wife" has a bit more leeway for a British English speaker.

Posted

Not necessarily.  That terminology is used here as well, but (depending on which state you're in) there's typically a definite legal distinction between living as husband and wife and being husband and wife.

Of course, we ordinary mortals are allowed to choose our words far more casually than the lawyers do!  And most of us have far more relevant things to worry about than whether a responsible couple has a certain piece of paper.

The older I've gotten the less things like a marriage certificate matter to me.  In fact, in the grand scheme of a relationship I feel like it really matters very little at all, except maybe as symbolism to the people themselves (if it's important to them)... legal aspects aside.  But quality/seriousness of the relationship?  Nah.  My "Uncle" has been living with my Aunt since before I was born.  He's as much my Uncle and a part of the family as anyone else.

Dunno - I used to say that too, that it made no difference to me at all ... right until I got married myself. Only to find out, much to my surprise, that introducing my better half as my husband instead of my lifemate (what you call your long-time cohabitation partner in German) made a lot of difference, emotionally. There's something quite game-changing about the act of publicly and officially declaring yourself a pair, or was to me at least (several other folks I talked to before and after their marriage agreed, though).

Nevertheless, it would never occur to me to treat an unmarried long-time partnership any different than a married one. To each their own .

Precisely.  Alex and I chose to be legally married -- but it took him a long while to talk me into it!  So I can certainly understand why some people choose to forgo the legalities indefinitely.

I got 11/11 as well.

I've read/heard in interviews where Martin and Amanda refer to each other as Mister and Missus.  Martin has done it more than Amanda from what I've seen (possibly because I've read/heard more interviews from him than her).  He may even have referred to her as wife on occasion even though the only marriage ceremonies they have ever gone through have been filmed for TV shows and/or movies.

As far as we've been told.

However, it's been a few years since I recall hearing either of them deny that they were married.  Recently I think they're just saying something like it doesn't matter to them.  And a year or so ago she said the kids had been bugging them about it.  So it's possible that at some point they snuck off and made it legal.  Or not.

It's all fine.

I forget when the most recent Amanda Abbington interview was but she wasn't interested in a real ceremony at that time.

Well, the movie based on the book Taliban Shuffle finally has a title:  Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.  Here's a sneak peek, which seems like a good article (I'm still in the middle of reading it).

Oh, and I just "got" the movie's title.

Hint:

It's based on the military alphabet code -- Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.

I may actually like Whiskey Tango Foxtrot better.  It sounds catchy.  (Just wouldn't care to try explaining it in certain circles.)

I see that this isn't the first time that title has been used (so I will deduct a couple of points from my opinion).  There have been a couple of books, including a novel that came out just last year -- but I hope that the movie's producers have given credit to the author of the other book, a 2007 photographic memoir of the war in Iraq.  They may or may not have borrowed the title intentionally, and the phrase may or may not have been original with Gilbertson, but the subject matter (if not the tone) is the same, so it seems to me that they owe him at least a nod.

This kinda reminds me of when they made a movie from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? -- under the title of another science-fiction novel, Blade Runner, apparently just because it sounded cool.  (Heaven knows what they'll ever do if they want to make a movie from the novel Blade Runner!)

Call it Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

The thing with titles is that they are not copyrightable so you can have 3 different movies come out the same year all with the same title and they can cover three very different topics & be in completely different genres.

Posted

Yes, I'm well aware of that.  But the producers of Blade Runner did "obtain rights" to the use of that title, although in that case, they may have actually been acquiring the rights to the title of an undeveloped movie based on the novel, rather than the title of the novel itself.  In any case, they did acknowledge the source of the title.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot turns out to be a relatively common title, so that may not be legally necessary.  But considering that the same title has been used for another (albeit very different) memoir of the same war, I'd be happy to see some sort of nod to that other author.

He looks great with a stubble beard.  And believe me, that's not a statement I make about many men; usually, I'm muttering "shave it or grow it, but pick a lane already!"
