Okay, wow. A whole novel in one month? God. Are you allowed to plan it out in advance, like think up characters, a plot, do a rough overview about what's going to happen in what chapter?

I once wrote 7000 words in a sugar-induced fangirl craze over the course of about four days. Wish I could write like that more often.

Yes you can plan it or wing it (called pantsing). This year I'm pantsing it and am thankful that I downloaded a map of the Underground a couple of months ago.

Every time I plan something, I end up just throwing the plan out the window and just doing whatever comes to mind. So in essence, all of what I write or draw is pantsing.

I can do that. The thing is I used to watch You Can't Do That On Television and if I remember correctly they used William Tell as well so I'm more likely to equate the song to that show even though I don't often.

And thanks to Nickelodeon I now put in the words: psycho, or when your mind goes into Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmuzik since they used that tune for looney tunes during their nick at night.

The Popeye score generally used just a line or two, the part that you'll first hear right after the "hornpipe" intro, when the brass comes in, and to which the words "Columbia, the gem of the ocean" are later sung.

 

It's also sung during the Fourth of July scene in The Music Man.

Oh, sorry, I'm not talking about the Popeye theme music.  But the score uses bits of other music as well, and "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean" is one of the more frequent ones.  As I recall, they typically use it when Popeye is going into full-action mode.

Spinach is ridiculous. Cook one pound of spinach and it ends up being little clot of green you can hold in your hands. They are WEAK, I say. WEAK.

It's still a pound of spinach, though.  If you prefer it all fluffy, you can always make a salad.

I will admit that spinach stalks are kinda wimpy (though perhaps I shouldn't use that word, since it could be construed as on topic).  Maybe Popeye should have eaten collard greens instead.  And if he really wanted spinach, it seems odd that he'd use canned spinach, since that's such a slimy mess.

 

I think the whole idea was based on kids refusing to eat their veggies -- especially canned spinach.  Popeye presumably did encourage healthier eating.  (That slime apparently does contain vitamins and minerals.)

 

I'm still trying to figure out why my parents never grew spinach.  The always had a big garden, even when we lived in town, but I don't recall that they ever grew spinach, so we bought the canned stuff.  I'm guessing that was because Indiana has really hot summers, so you can only grow cool-weather crops like spinach in the spring and fall.  My folks liked to plant the garden once and have done with it, so they specialized in hot-weather crops like corn and tomatoes.

Yes, but it's still slime. I mean, there is healthy food that is appetizing as well - why force children to eat the horrid stuff?

I feel very strongly about spinach.  I'll eat it cooked, but I don't care for it as a salad b/c I hate the stems.  If I get a spinach salad I sit there and pluck all the stems off.   They jab you in the mouth and stuff while you're chewing.  Blergh.
