Cracked ice on a lake/pond

Posted

Ooo, yeah, I think I see clouds. Roadways or landing strips seen from the air? And it's sort of ghostly because it was taken through a thick airplane window?

Yes..! Roadway and precisely up to the minor points are correct. Well done. I thought the trees would be the one you guys would see, but yes, clouds too.

Your turn.

Well, I wasn't sure if they were trees or specks of dirt.

Okay, this is all I have right now. Probably too easy, but it looks cool, so hey. What is it, and what is it made of?

Wall made of glass bottles (at least the bottom) and cement/concrete.

What the heck, VBS!

Yes, you're right Camper. (I knew it was too easy!) Here's the whole thing. I want one!!

I remember seeing a house in California where they had made a border for all their flower beds by pushing rows of bottles top down into the soil. Effective weed barrier, and very beautiful, I loved it. Wouldn't work where I live, though ... gets too cold in the winter, the bottles would break. :( I tried it with plastic items but they disintegrated in a couple years too.

That is hardly my fault isn't it?

NOW I can see the image.

Oh the bottles would break in winter? That is quite extreme cold. Wow.

Well, it's the expansion/contraction of the frozen dirt and water inside and around them that does the breaking. I suppose if you sealed them so they were only filled with air; they might last longer?? But I think the outside forces would still break them down eventually. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised to learn they lose some of the bottles in this wall every winter, but I guess as long as the base of the bottle is still intact, it doesn't matter.

Oh, I see now ... you were trying to show me what was on your phone with that photo, weren't you? Ah. Well. What can I say, my internent accessing device is just smarter than yours, nyah nyah. (Too bad the operator isn't as smart as the device.... )

Maybe they break because they are wet, from morning dew or anything that eventually freeze, there are some contraction or expansion and yadda yadda, I'm not sure, it's explainable by physic but it's not favorite subject, ever.

Yes! That's what I was trying to do. You are just getting that Now?? XD

And you are saying I am dumber than my phone? You.. you! You are..right. And it seems to know that I have developed unhealthy attachment to. I can totally throw it away when I'm on holiday, but daily life, working, queuing, waiting, I'd die without it I think. I can find everything! It's like carrying encyclopedia, so of course it's smarter. :p

Guess what this is (I know the name of it in 2 languages only):

I had this plant before and remember its name very well, because it's unusual: The Wandering Jew.

I think the actual name is tradescantia zebrina.

It's creeper or ground plant and soon took over many parts of the garden, very easy to propagate as well, only by cutting.

Correct VBS. I used to have one as well till my mom helped me kill it on accident. I love the name of it. I also find the English name for it slightly ironic as it's native to Mexico which is not normally considered a place with a high Jewish population.

Yes me too. Always thought the wandering maybe relate to the nature of this plant being a creeping plant.

When the landscaper at my work told me about the name I didn't believe him at first. Btw, there are quite a lot of variant of it, dark green (without stripes or other color) and lighter green with white yellowish stripe. The dark green is the most hardy, I failed to keep the lighter one.

I hope it's not too easy..
