Our girl is a bit of a moral swamp . . we don't want our hero wading into there, and I don't believe that he would sell his soul like that just to get his rocks off.  I like my Sherlock Holmes to be just a bit shinier and more noble than the rest of us, and if that makes me wrong, I prefer not to be right.

And doesn't that make the discussion fun?   :D

Maybe.  As long as you agree that Sherlock would have to disinfect himself after an encounter with this Adler.  As for going into battle without armor . . .best not!  Who knows what he would catch?

I think Sherlock disinfects himself after working with his homeless network (he's said it, metaphorically) and after a night in a drug den. But after Irene? She's a sex worker, but that doesn't necessarily mean she sells sex - all we've seen her provide is BDSM play, and one assumes she knows how to be careful.

And "no glove, no love?" Sherlock is a modern guy,  He has what he needs in his nightstand drawer like every good gentlemen, probably checking each batch for quality (reference the BC interview) and rotating the stock by date to make sure he has a good fresh batch if there's been a dry spell in there.   :D

But if they are getting it on on the border of Afghanistan and Iraq, Sherl doesn't have access to his bedside drawer.  And we know what the desert heat does to latex!

Sherlock would be prepared for any contingency, I suppose.  He probably secured a bolt hole in some desert cave for the purposes of spiriting the Woman away from her would-be beheaders.  While waiting for the coast to be clear, they have to pass the time somehow.  Sherl has brought her riding crop along because he knows she doesn't feel like Herself without it.  He agrees she may use it on him so long as she doesn't drug him again.  He did not like being unconscious.

Hey, one writer to another . . .I put up a little snippet of a screenplay over on the fan fic thread . . just a bit of whimsy in response to a natter Carol and I were having about the presumptive height of our Dr. Watson relative to his flatmate.  Go take a look, I amused myself with it and hope to amuse a few others.

Btw, Richard Armitage would make a d*mn fine Sherlock.  But that was not the substance of my little riff.

I went in this thread expecting to read about gruesome murderers and despicable villains, eh, nevermind. :O

Very interesting question, because as Moriarty said: "every fairy tale needs his devil"...

Moriarty himself is a good competitor to the prize. I found Smith boring and CAM was good. But I was completely caught in Euros as an incarnation of pure evil, for the reasons I have developed in last ep topic. It is an evil you can easily be caught in, questioning rationality of modern societies. And that also fits with ACD Sherlock.

I remember taking a class in college ... don't remember the exact subject, but one of the things we covered was the ethics of psychology. One discussion was about people who seem to be "born evil" and whether they can be held accountable for their actions, and if not, are they really evil? Or just sick?

No particular point here, except your remark, Janyss, reminded me of that. I have a hard time thinking of Eurus as evil because I don't see she ever had a "choice" to be anything else ... something was missing from her makeup from the day she was born. But is it really possible to be "born evil?" I don't know ... it was not a question we were able to resolve in school, but I remember it was a fascinating discussion. Maybe that's one reason I don't mind Eurus as a character as much as some people; I'm sort of intrigued by the topic of "evil incarnate" to begin with.

If you're willing to cut Eurus some slack on that account, then what about CAM? Or any of the other baddies, for that matter?

Of course if some people are born bad and can't help it, then maybe some people are born good and should therefore get no credit?

Eurus doesn't even come across as evil to me. More like totally confused and out of touch with reality. She seems like an alien who is stranded here on earth and cannot for the life of her figure out this planet and the primitive life forms on it.

Posted

If she can’t figure out the primitive life forms on Earth how can she analytically determine when the next terrrorist attack will take place and mind control people enough to take over Sherrinford or impersonate multiple people? She lacked empathy or a conscience but I’m not sure she lacked understanding of human nature or societal conventions. She was more of a sociopath or psychopath rather than insane.

In any case, I didn't get the impression that Eurus considered her actions to be evil. She would probably reject the notion of good and evil altogether and argue that the concept of morals and ethics is hollow - her whole series of experiments at Sherrinford seems designed to prove that hypothesis (although I think part of her was secretly hoping to get it disproved). Moriarty on the other hand seems very aware of being a baddie and to revel in that role.

But does it matter if Eurus would consider herself evil for the viewer to consider her so? She seemed to revel in having control over Sherrinford and manipulating Sherlock and has no empathy for anyone other than herself. Personally, I’d consider that evil.

This is something I find disappointing about this show though... the idea that bad women are ultimately just wounded damsels in distress (Irene, Mary who even became patron saint of “her boys”, Eurus) but bad men are just evil (Moriarty, CAM, Smith, to lesser extent cabbie). The only bad woman who they didn’t try to excuse the behavior for was Norbury. Can’t women just be evil like their male counterparts?
