Ah, I see. I was all aflutter about these new pics and wondering why they hadn't made it to this site yet. I just posted a link in the news forum, I assumed that was the correct place to put them.  So is the "news" section supposed to be spoiler-free, because I figured any "news" would potentially fall into the spoiler category. Should I delete my post over there?

If you can tell the difference between a spoiler and a non-spoiler at this point, that would be a good distinction to continue making.  The line has gotten a little fuzzy in my mind, but Sherlockology says they won't publish any spoilers, so I figure anything that comes in on their newsfeed is not an "official" spoiler.  On the other hand, some things (still) seem to be filming news and other things seem to be release news, so things may end up in the "Spoiler" area that few people would consider to be a spoiler, simply because that's where the Filming News thread is.

In short, just do the best you can.  And you might as well leave your prior posts where they are, since I've already replied to them.

Am I allowed to babble about these pictures here, seeing it's in the "Spoilers, Rumors and Speculation" Thread?

Well, I'll just try if I remember how the spoiler box goes to make sure:

Who is the new guy in the picture with Molly?

Mary does seem all set to join the team with a coat and scarf of her own... I really like what I've seen of her here and can't wait to meet her.

Isn't it great how they have Sherlock always look as if he didn't want his picture taken at all?

What is Sherlock doing lying on the floor in a tux? I'm assuming that's not a terrible wall design behind him...

I can't believe it! In this shot, Sherlock looks almost exactly like I always imagined the original Mr Holmes:

sherlock-series-3-episode-1-premiere-20.

Oh, isn't this all great.... These pictures have certainly done one thing for me: They've blasted away all apprehension and anxiety about the direction this show might be headed in and left me with nothing but joy on seeing all those faces again. It was never easier to believe fictional characters really existed. Quite a bit of Molly there! It seems the creators are very aware of how popular she's become and rightly so. If we get to see as much of her in the episodes as in these pics, I'll be very pleased.

Yes, and doesn't Molly look great?  She's really blossomed!  And I love picture 10 of Mary, as well.

The new guy in 14 looks like he could almost be Sherlock's stunt double, except that the scarf doesn't match.  Maybe Molly got tired of waiting for the real thing and settled for a wannabe from Anderson's support group?

As for Sherlock's floor pose in 15 -- judging by what he's wearing, that's the same scene as 23, which appears to be the fancy-restaurant confrontation.  Which may explain why he's on the floor!

In 25, Greg is holding what I believe is called a champagne flute -- fancier than the usual at 221B!  Could be another party?  A special announcement?

I never thought I'd do something this immature ever in my life, but I have actually downloaded all those pictures and put them in a slide show on my laptop. I call it "the poor man's (or in this case woman's) series 3"....

Molly looks really well. Dear Molly. If anybody ever calls her a doormat again, I will form a "Wallflowers unite" protest group!

Mary is gorgeous, and doesn't she have a great smile?

Hmmmm, if Sherlock is on the floor for the reason I think you mean, then why does he look so cheerful about it and why is his face so intact?

Maybe I should have said "confrontation number one"?  Maybe he's chuckling to himself, thinking, "Well, good, now he's got that out of his system!"  Sherlock does have a tendency to underestimate certain former Army doctors.

OK, I'm trying to figure out the spoiler code, because I haven't been able to find any info about it in the help forum.  Can anyone explain that really quickly before I post so that I don't do it wrong and inadvertently post spoilers without a cut?

You write it like this:

post-575-0-07886400-1386275362_thumb.jpg

and then it's a spoiler.

Or you click on the third icon to your right on the top of the the "reply" box, the little blue square with the green line across. A box will pop up that says "BBC code". Under "please select", you choose "spoiler".

Actually, since this thread is inside "spoilers, rumors and speculation", couldn't we just write everything out here?

Depends on how much of a spoiler it is.  If it's, say, Molly has a new dress, then what the heck.  But if it's Sherlock marries Mrs. Hudson (and just remember, folks, you heard that here first!), then you'd better spoiler-box it.

I'm gonna start a thread in the help forum, telling how to do a spoiler box, then I'll come back here and link to it.  This question has come up a lot lately.

Added:  Here's the link.

Ha! If anybody writes a fan fic on that scenario, please link to it :P

Thanks for the explanations, Carol!

Thanks so much guys!

I actually almost tried the [s.p.o.i.l.e.r.] thing, but I figured it might be more complicated than that! Should have known I'd be over-thinking it!

On to business...

In regards to the picture of Molly with the unidentified man (and what looks like possibly an engagement ring on her left hand!), I have to say that it makes me really excited for her.  I've always liked Molly and I've always hated how Sherlock treats her.  I think he sort of really realized it in RF when he had that look of,"Does she really think that?" after she commented so casually that she "didn't count". But I don't think that excuses his past behavior towards her.  I remember being really annoyed with him when he complimented her hair to manipulate her into doing something for him, because before that I had been able to give him a pass on his behavior under the idea that, because he seems to be so oblivious to things like love and affection, he didn't actually understand that she had feelings for him and just thought she was sort of frivolous and quirky. But that proved that he was very aware of the fact that she was quite smitten with him, and was willing to use it to his advantage, while continuing to make her feel like crap the rest of the time.

I'm not a Sherlolly shipper, but I do think Molly is a great person and has been a great friend to Sherlock. She certainly deserves to be treated with respect, rather than as an asset to be used at Sherlock's discretion and pushed aside when she's not needed.

I'm hoping that, after she helped him with The Fall, he will have a new respect and appreciation for her when he returns.

But more than that, I'm hoping she will have a new respect and appreciation for HERSELF.

The appearance of a new man in her life (we assume) gives me hope that, with Sherlock out of the picture for the last two years, she finally had some distance to stop pining for him and allow herself to find a man who is as caring and kind as she is and will actually return her feelings.  (And hopefully he isn't a mad scientist or serial killer who is only pretending to be the boy next door in order to get at Sherlock.)

And I hope it has given her some confidence so that, should Sherlock slip back into old patterns, she will be very quick to put him in his place.

Agreed.  But 14-guy looks like a clone of Sherlock!  If he's the source of the ring, then one has to wonder just how much progress she's actually made.

This article from the MTV website has an interesting quote from Martin Freeman:

About that new villain, Freeman raved that Lars Mikkelsen's new character is "fantastic," "chilling" and "not even really there."

"[He's] like a dead man walking. He's really scary; scary in a different way to Moriarty," Freeman said. "Not crazy, crazy like Moriarty was, but sort of just chilling. I think you'll like him."

Not sure how literally to take that part about "liking" Magnussen -- kinda sounds as though Moriarty was lovable by comparison!

Yes! I actually growl at the TV whenever I see that scene... I love Sherlock, and his manipulative ways can be quite entertaining, but that scene in the canteen... oooh, I just want to slap his face.

I hope we get to see Molly tell Sherlock off in series 3, if the occasion rises.

More bits of wonderment about those absolutely lovely pictures:

- Are they all stills from actual episodes, meaning we will be watching series 3 and going "oh, that's where that came from" all the time? Or are they simply portraits of the actors in character, taken on set? Or both?

- I cannot quite wrap my head around all those "people in a restaurant" scenes. There seem to be at least two different ones: John, Mary and Sherlock in a tux at some fancy place and then John still dressed up and Sherlock in his ordinary clothes at a less fancy one with plastic tablecloths.

- Neither can I make any sense of Sherlock dressed up. The only occasion we know of so far that would call for this kind of apparel would be John and Mary's wedding, but I doubt that will take place in a restaurant or include Sherlock lying on the floor while talking to somebody.

- Is there maybe a scene with a fire in one of the episodes? A large fire outdoors? Why, for heaven's sake?

Of course, all this speculation is rather silly, but it's fun to do while waiting...

The large fire outside is supposed to be a Guy Fawkes Night fire. Something about John is thought to be trapped inside....or near...at least that was the buzz that is why it shows Sherlock and Mary rushing to it. I think that is to take place in "The Empty Hearse".

Okay, this really deserves a spoiler box!

Hard to imagine him inside the fire, he'd be kind of dead by now. And I do hope we won't have "now John fakes his death, too"... Wow, poor John, the "substitute for damsel in distress" role really seems to be tenacious. How did you find all this out?

Some of each, is my best guess.

Near as I can piece it together from casting calls, reports from location, and these photos, John and Mary are having dinner in the fancy restaurant (speculation is that he's planning to propose there). Sherlock turns up "hiding in plain sight" by dressing as a waiter (thus the tux). He and John get into an argument, but when things start to get physical, management intervenes. John and Mary go to the other restaurant, and apparently Sherlock follows them (now in his own clothing), and they continue their "disagreement."

At least that makes a lot of sense in the light of the few images we've seen. If they really do have Sherlock crashing poor John's marriage proposal, all I can say is, I won't be the least bit surprised. That was the first idea that passed my mind when I saw the teaser. I do wonder how they will have Mary react to this. My best bet is that she will be pretty amused and say yes, anyway.

I've seen several people say this, and I just don't see it.  They have similar coloring, I suppose, but other than that, I don't think they have that much in common. At least not in that still photo. I suppose it'll be easier to discern once we get the episodes.

OK, the word "clone" was intended humorously rather than literally, so I shall retract it. As you say, he has similar coloring. He also has a similar hair style and is similarly dressed. It seems to me that he must be intentionally copying Sherlock's "look."

I'll buy that.  Could be that he's a fan, and he and Molly met coincidentally. But I hope she likes him for himself, and isn't just substituting him for Sherlock because she's still pining for him.  She deserves better than that.

Some new pictures have been released. A few stills from The Empty Hearse.  You can view them here:
