I feel for you sitty as I can't afford to go either. :(

I kinda thought that might be the observatory too, sitty, but upon closer inspection, I don't think it is -- no small domes at the ends, for one thing.  And it's hard to say regarding the other building.  The only one that I could just about identify is the one with the two prongs on top, but that's in Chicago, so presumably not.

Maybe that's just a British take on a generic American skyline?

I'd love to be wrong, but aren't those smaller domes on the end for the big domed bldg in the header?  I can only view it on my phone.

Oops, you're right -- sorry, I read your photo post too quickly, and was looking at the building in the center.  Yup, you're right, domes.  So definitely could be the observatory.  Still not sure about the other building, since I can't see far enough to the sides to tell if there's an uneven step-down on the lower roof.

Anybody recognize that building near the left, with the three things on top?

I'm also curious what the arch bldg in the center is.

ETA:  Nevermind, I think it's likely the entrance to Universal Studios.

Ugh, ugh, ugh.

Hmm, could be.

Seems odd to show us a more-or-less identifiable skyline, but not admit where it is.   Maybe they think all US cities look like LA?  (After all, they do on television!)

In a way I'm relieved, because I have neither the schedule nor the money to go anyway ... if it had been in my backyard, it would have killed me to not go..... (as usual, it's all about meeeeeeee! )

I just wanted to go meet Mark and Loo.

Damn.  We're sunk.

Why the heck are they putting it all the way out there, three thousand miles from the east coast?  And of course New York would be three thousand miles from the west coast.  Why couldn't they have it somewhere in the middle, like St.Louis?

Doubt that I could go next year anyhow, but that just about clinches it for me.

I wonder if they targeted West Coast since East Coast folks can fly to London easier?  Or it just worked out that way as far as a venue.

That crossed my mind.  But if so, that seems like an oversimplification.  For one thing, London requires a passport.  Flight time is close, though -- NY to LA is 6 hours, NY to London is 7 hours.

I'm wondering if they'll use the same convention center that they had for SDCC.  If so, it would a 3-hr train ride for me.

Posted

Wasn't SDCC actually in San Diego, though?  Since they're showing the LA skyline on their website, I assume they're having the Sherlock con in LA, or at least greater LA -- Orange County at the furthest.  Then again, maybe they don't know the difference?

Or it's actually going to be in New York, but they don't want us to know yet....

My suspicion would be some place that Vertue/Moffit/Gatiss have already been to, checked out, and are comfortable with.  SDCC - they know that venue.  Might be LA, might not.  I doubt it would be Denver or Salt Lake City.  Either NYC, LA or San Diego.

So you think the LA skyline may be just decoration (if not an actual red herring)?

I have absolutely no idea.  I'm just trying to use logic on this.  If it were in LA, that gives everyone a chance to do double duty out here - take meetings with studios, directors, production companies, etc.

Well, we'll presumably all know in -- what is it, four more days?

It's in Los Angeles, May 26-28 at the Marriott down at LAX.

Definitely won't be going unless I win the lottery that I don't play.  Total cost would be 4-5K not including food and I could get a free Book of Mormon from the hotel (not that I don't already have one of those somewhere that a professor gave me in college).

What about a low-priced Southwest ticket?  Also, there are MANY other hotels right next to the Marriott.  There's no reason why it should cost $4-5k unless you get the VIP ticket.

Book of Mormon? You mean the Gideon's Bible?

Hope some of you get to go!

Posted

Marriot hotels give you both as the Marriot family is very much devout Mormons the last I knew. And knowing me the way I do, I wouldn't want less than VIP but would not be able to afford the cheapest package anyhow.

Well, Carol. Unfortunately we were right.

I'd consider maybe going and getting the Gold package since we have Southwest miles, but it'd have to be a hell of a cast list attending (meaning Mark and Loo) for me to make the trek.

Huh. I did not know this thing.
