Still no word on the promised American convention?

Posted

One might almost get the impression that they think of the British affair as THE convention, and (promises notwithstanding) they'll do one in the US when/if they get around to it.

I couldn't go this year anyhow, but I'd think that most North Americans would prefer them to be a bit more upfront about their intentions. If they happen to eventually drop the idea again this year, it might be too late for us to get memberships in the UK one, let alone discounted hotel rates and airfares.

I don't suppose that's their plan? To prevent a mass invasion of Americans? Nah, that's just paranoia talking.

But if they do seriously intend to put on a US convention at any time in the future, it'd better be soon -- or we're likely to stop believing them.

The few communiques I've seen from them did seem a bit, er, surly.

Especially as regards their oft-promised but not yet delivered US venue. You'd think they'd have a tab on their website for it, so people wouldn't have to email them every few months (only to be told basically, "When there's any news, we'll tell you -- now go away and don't bother us").

Here's what they had to say two months ago:

Found this as a reply on their FB page:

ok, I will respond to this for you, but we cannot have subjects keep on being hijacking with the topic of the US event its not fare , we are the running the UK event and the fans that are looking forward to this event need to be aloud to enjoy the event and the run up to it , its only fair to them.

So i will say this once so you all know , then we need to let this go till we have news on the US event. .We have been to the US, we have tried to get the venues we wanted in the city that the production team and main cast wanted us to go to, but the availability of the venue at the time we were given which would work for the team was not available. So we are back to stage one for the US event, but as some more time goes on we will find out when some of them team are again available, we will re-look at when it works for everyone to come together to pick the date, and then try to lock down the venue again. Thats the total truth. There is nothing more to it than that. We all want to come to the US but we have to have all the moons in alignment to get it to happen. Its really not easy with the cast being so busy and for the US event we want to go live with at least one head liner locked in so its going to be tricky and the run in time will most likely be like the first Sherlocked event where we did not have that much time. We are committed to do the US event but it will be announced when we it is ready to be and we cannot force it, it just has to be the right time. I hope you see we are behind it and it will happen, I hope you will all now respect the fans attending this coming event now i have told you the totally truth and we avoid hijack posts with this question in future . Its only fair to the fans here to let them get into and enjoy the run up to this event, and when the US fans get their event and cool guests attending that event we will ask the same of the UK fans. We will get to both locations, its like herding cats getting a lot of the cast to be available at one time !

There is no point in asking for updates when there are none to give. Hope that helps explain why its not happened sooner, and as soon as we know you will.

Jason

Clearly they consider the UK event to be the real thing, and how dare we pushy Americans expect any updates till they're damn good and ready.

Baker Street Babes on tumblr are saying Sherlocked US event is being announced and tickets are going on sale 8/17.   Will be in first half of 2017.

It would be nice if we could get a location and pricing before tickets actually go on sale, but alas no.  We're a large country and travel arrangements need to be worked out.   I'd rather not have to work it all out in a panic the day tickets go on sale (if I can even go b/c between travel and ticket pricing my H's eyes might roll right out of his head).

I likely won't be able to go unless I become "rich" by August (aka actually have livable income so I can afford it).

They already know where it'll be, that's what they're saying, right? And they know when, too. But they can't tell us for three more weeks???!

Yeah, I'm not sure why they're keeping the location (and date) secret until the day tickets go on sale.   I'm actually a bit put out about all this.  That plus their general attitude earlier this year when US folks were annoyed about the lack of info/an event.

"Stop complaining on our FB page and leave us alone.  Let the people going to UK Sherlocked be happy.  Why are you sucking all their fun?!"

Precisely. (Though I'm not sure they were quite that polite.)

That, plus first they announced a US con for last year. Then -- after months of stringing us along -- decided to drop the idea. Then they promise us a US con for this year, and once more string us along -- and when the date is finally (sort of) announced, it's NEXT year! Maybe there's a good reason they're calling it a "con."

I think I've said this before, but if they're going to persist in thinking of the UK event as the "real" one, I wish they'd just drop the whole pretense of a US event, so that we American fans can just save up and go to that one.

The other thing I'm concerned about is who the guests will be.  I mean, if you look at the UK one this year... most of the big names for the most part are missing so far, and it's in two months.  Benedict, Martin, Amanda, Loo, Andrew, Rupert... I'm sure some/most of those will end up going b/c it's more local, but I wouldn't want to throw down the type of money they're asking without any certainty of who is going.  Especially if the US event gets fewer big name guests b/c of the distance thing.

Right. It's bound to make a difference, and given the lack of enthusiasm that the convention planners are showing, it's hard to imagine that they'd waste too much energy getting a good lineup for us.

I can't help wondering if one reason they're planning a US event is to keep the UK event from being overrun. So to them it's not so much a real event as a pressure-relief valve.

I see that I may have misread the announcement.  Clearly, tickets are going on sale as of August 17.  But when will the website come alive (with the date & place announcement)?  It's not clear to me whether that's also August 17, or merely at some point between now and that date.  I certainly hope the latter!

If the former, I think they're kinda overlooking the fact that the US is geographically far larger than the UK.  It's not so bad to say, "our convention will be somewhere in the UK, and we won't tell you till the tickets go on sale," because it's clearly not gonna be in the Orkney Islands, it'll be somewhere within a few hundred miles (with London being highly probable).  But saying the same thing about the US is more like saying "our convention will be somewhere in Europe."  This country is 3,000 miles (~5,000 km) across -- and that's not even counting Alaska and Hawaii.  Kinda hard to make plans, or even know whether you'll have the time/money to go, without knowing where.  I suspect it'll be either New York or Los Angeles (since British folks seem to be only vaguely aware that there are places in between), but that really doesn't narrow it down much!

I could say the same for people who live in New York or Los Angeles. :D

I'm not feeling too confident about being able to go to Sherlocked.  There are palm trees on the top of the page in the skyline.

Hmm, I see what you mean:

Tall buildings and palm trees -- if that's supposed to be a clue, then I'd guess either Miami or Los Angeles, conceivably Honolulu.  Does anyone recognize the skyline?

I think it's LA, which sucks for us east coast folks.
