What's the current word on the elusive American con? <_<

It's in May and they have not mentioned all of the guests yet.

What's the current word on the elusive American con? <_<

I think it's not so elusive anymore. But I haven't followed the guest list.

I'm soooo not happy with Birmingham and the late date. No direct flights so far, :( the trouble of getting there is really spoiling it to me. Didn't decided yet, but as I imagine just sitting at home while… it's not a good feeling either.

Dear J.P. , please don't throw any more good money after bad! They are falling into the American convention prototype, and splurging out to meet Mr Gatiss/Mycroft three years running may not be the highlight of the year!

And Birmingham is a far cry from London. Went there once for a series of seminars, the usual British industrial city like Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds. Nothing to write home about.

Aha! I now see why there isn't word one about the US convention on the Sherlocked website. It has its own separate site, SherlockedUSA.com (you'd think they could at least put a link on their original site's FAQ page).

http://www.sherlockedusa.com

Confirmed guests so far are (alphabetically speaking) Abbington, Gatiss, Moffat, Scott, and Vertue.

So far there is one that seems to be significant to what we were discussing lately. :(

Sherlock team before: Everything you see is there for a reason

Sherlock team now: Idk, doesn't have a meaning we just did it

Is that the reason why the energy level in the whole fandom dropped dramatically?

I wish they would get someone to conduct these interviews who's actually seen Sherlock....

I've wondered this before: did Moftiss ever actually say everything is there for a reason? (And I don't count people like Arwel, who is clearly trolling us :d) Or is that just something the fandom came up with?

Just looked at it. Egad, I hope there's someone twitting from the event who doesn't have such a big axe to grind.

A bit of a different view:

http://rox712.tumblr.com/post/161135090346/clarifying

friskykatt:

Obv. I shortened the answers just to be concise, but I’ll expand on a few things that people are wondering about:

Skull pic - Mark was absolutely sincere talking about this, and this was a VERY casual fun setting (he’s quite charming and fit irl!). First he explained how the original artist was charging loads of cash to use his print, and they decided enough of that. They had Arwel make a skull, which was a print over a light box (blah blah lil pics of ACD, you’ve heard that before). When shot however, the other lights would hit it - did he say “oddly”? I forget the exact word. It would look too glaring, and like a postage stamp stuck on the wall (pantomimes that). So they changed it. Original question girl follows up “you turned it down?” And Mark replied “no, no, it was done in post” and a comment that “there’s really nothing more to it”

Budget: Mark and Sue both talked about how Sherlock was a huge hit, people think they are rolling in dosh ($) to get them made, but it’s the BBC, and it’s just not that way. Sue made a quip about how she’s the boss, but it’s not all in her hands (paraphrasing there - I have an excellent memory for dialogue, so most of this you can take as quite accurate). Arwen described drawing the “bond lair” - his words- and showing them the pics and then pantomimed jaw dropping astonishment from the team. He followed up with talking about how such a huge set was difficult to bring in on budget. In all the talks of $ there was a slight note of bitterness, or disbelief. SLIGHT note, they are British, but definitely there. I’m very sure they weren’t making it up.
Lights- I was unclear earlier on what Arwel said - he talked at length that there were 3 sets and a location every time they went down the stairs, so you’re literally seeing 2 different ceiling lights because you’re seeing two different sets. I mushed it up with the skull stuff earlier, sorry. He also spoke about how hard they try for continuity, but stuff just gets lost, and “every time you hand an actor a prop, they break it” and followed with a funny anecdote about Eccles and (forget) both IMMEDIATELY broke their first sonic screwdriver.

I’ll have more tonight for you hopefully! Glad I can share stuff with you. Do you wanna see more pics or is that boring?

Houston, we have an ANSWER! :D

Thanks JP, that's more like it! Nice to know there's still a few people out there who actually like the show, and aren't just out to bring it down.....

They think they have budget problems now, just wait til Trump gets his hands on the PBS budget. There won't be any money coming from the US any more......

So you and I are not the only ones who noticed the problem with the lighting ... but the show runners didn't notice! I still find that utterly amazing.

The truth might just lie somewhere in-between. If they didn't go for explosions, and helicopters, and drones, and a world travel… there would be more money left for the important things… :P

I love this line of Andrew's: “ the longer I live the more I become convinced that everything is about love.” Bless him. I know exactly what he means.

I don't think I every realized Mycroft's ring was on his right hand. :picard:

In Mark's defence, I think he's always said he'd like to do an S5. It's everyone else who's been casting doubts on whether there would ever be one! They asked the wrong person. :picard: :picard:

 Or big name Hollywood stars.... :d

Hell, yes. I forgot they hired at least one and it probably swallowed the half of the budget. Well, it's actually their own fault. ;D

But seriously, I like to think that BC would do Sherlock for much less than he could actually demand. Just because.

Posted

I think I read somewhere that he and Martin do indeed do it for less than, er, whatever their fee would be elsewhere. But I bet it's still more than when they started, especially Ben.

I remember I said right from the start that the production looked "cheap" compared to the past. So maybe it actually was. And yet the episode with the least practical effects, TLD, is the one that looks most like their usual high production values. Hmmm.

Yeah, the pool thing's interesting, but it's also mentioned on the DVD specials or some such place. Why don't people ask something new, like what did Jim and Eurus talk about during those fateful five minutes? :p

Don't recall ever hearing either of the Moftisses say it.  They do tend to talk about us missing crucial clues, but that's just one thing here and one thing there.  It's certainly not everything.

Where I have heard that statement is from fans who are trying to prove their theories about what the show really means -- they DO tend to claim that everything is there for a reason (even including the props), perhaps because it makes it easier to prove things.  And yes, that belief of theirs could very well have led to a sudden drop in their interest level, once they realized that things in S5 had not gone according to their predictions.
