Well, I Google-imaged mince pies - probably also basied on the Ariane DeVere transcripts... and sure enough, that's what they were.

OK -- I guess you just have to be British to recognize them right off the bat.

What they were was sort of bugging me.  Glad for the tip from Ariane to do some research.

Right -- me too!  (Though I suppose I would've been perfectly happy thinking of them as jelly donuts.)

I had them figured as some sort of tart or pie, but I would never in a million years have come up with mince, nor did I have a clue why they were kept in the fridge.

Mince pies... this is the closest pic I could find to the ones in ASIB and HLV

Someone concocted a video showing the favorite scenes from a recent poll ... I agree with everyone who says the Sherlock/Molly kiss should be here!

Must add this one to my list:

Holmes: "All emotion is abhorrent to me. It is the grit in a sensitive instrument. The -"

Watson: "The crack in the lense, yes"

Holmes: "Well, there you see. I've said it all before."

Watson: "No, I wrote all that. You're quoting yourself from the Strand Magazine."

Holmes: "Well, exactly."

Watson: "No, those are my words, not yours. That is the version of you that I present to the public. The brain without a heart. The calculating machine. I write all of that, Holmes, and the readers lap it up, but I do not believe it."

Yet another evidence of how Holmes/Sherlock wraps himself up in a protective bubble of reason. Here it certainly sounds and looks like he's doing it more out of fear of getting hurt than driven by a goal to remain reasonable - untouched by sentiment.

Of course, that is debatable. As they continue the conversation, Holmes certainly seems to regain the upper hand, you might say:

"Oh, Watson. No one made me. I made me."

This sounds more someone who has worked diligently at being a man of utter reason, and has learned to despise emotion from the perspective that emotion clutters the mind.

I think it's both. He does despise emotion and therefore pretends, even to himself - maybe especially to himself - not to have them.

Great scene!

Hm, this might be how I would rank my fifteen favorite scenes (ten is too few):

Number 15 first:

The drugs bust, ASiP.

"Look at you lot. You're all so vacant. Is it nice not being me? It must be so relaxing".

14:

Sherlock and Mycroft's exchange in the airplane, ASiB.

"Then give him a puzzle, and watch him dance". "Don't be ridiculous".

13.

The ending of ASiP, from when Sherlock realises that John shot the cabbie.

"You risk your life to prove you're clever".

12.

Sherlock's breakdown in the pub, HoB.

"There is nothing wrong with me. Do you understand?"

11.

The conversation about emotions between Holmes and Watson, TAB.

"You're quoting yourself from the Strand... Those are my words, not yours".

10.

The very poignant, heartwarming part of the best man speech, TSoT.

"John, I am a ridiculous man, redeemed only by the warmth and constancy of your friendship".

9.

John asks Sherlock to be his best man, TSoT.

"You mean... I'm your... best friend?"

8.

Sherlock's uncut video message to John, 'Many Happy Returns'.

""Why am I doing this again?" "You're going to miss dinner". "Of course I'm gonna miss dinner. There'll be people".

7.

The Mind Palace sequence when Sherlock flatlines, HLV.

"You're letting him down, Sherlock. John Watson is definitely in danger".

6.

The pool scene, TGG.

"I will burn the heart out of you." "I have been reliably informed that I don't have one".

5.

The "Don't make people into heroes" argument, TGG.

"I've disappointed you". "Good. Good deduction".

4.

John's graveyard speech, TRF.

"Sometimes I didn't even think you were human, but... you were the best man and the most human human being I have ever known".

3.

The reunion in the restaurant, TEH.

"Surprise me". "I'm certainly endeavoring to, sir".

2.

The rooftop scene, TRF.

"Nobody could be that clever". "You could".

No. 1:

Sherlock fearing that John has been taken in by Moriarty's scemes, TRF.

"No one can fake being such an annoying dick all the time".

I thought I had participated in this thread but apparently not, flipped for quite a bit to see if what I'm about to include had been mentioned.

Basically I only hate scenes featuring General Shan (except the last of TBB when Moriarty about to take care of her :)) and Kitty Rilley toilet scene (if someone invaded my space that way I would go ballistic. Well ballistic may not be right word. Most probably just Get The F Out,  and if she refused, next step is her head in the toilet, ideally.

Sooo, my favorite scenes (only those haven't mentioned so far):

- confirmation of Moriarty

537j0x.jpg

From the camera angle, the alternating focus and Sherlock's expression throughout, it's brilliant. He is so happy at the end. Poor boy finally find a suitable playdate.   :)

- something hillarious

5pwzq.jpg

Sherlock pursuing photography, for a while, with interruption of Scehmet or whoever that catty creature and happy John who thought he had just solved a case.

- uhm..

so5y7n.jpg

If he is happy for giving Mycroft that much trouble, I am happy too.

It has nothing to do with how intense he looks and full blown baritone voice.

Okay, that does it. You and JP have to tell me where you find those adorable emoties. Puh-leeeezzzzze?

perhaps it would be easier to have the shorter list of what we don't like, because clearly we could talk the episodes to death of what we do like!  Seriously, they just get more and more brilliant.  How in the world will they keep this up and up the game of it???

You're right. Abominable Bride more and more Brilliant! Looking forward to the Spring!

This is a really hard thing to narrow down.  I keep opening this thread, then wandering off, then coming back... you get the idea....  but I'm gonna try to do this.

Series 1...

ASIP:

Probably my favorite scene of the episode is the end scene.  So many great moments from "I'm in shock. Look, I've got a blanket!"  From discovering Mycroft's identity and the banter between Sherlock and Mycroft, to the iconic (for me) moment with Sherlock and John walking away from the scene smiling and laughing.  It's my "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship moment" for this show.

TGG:

Definitely the end scene at the pool with Moriarty.  He's fantastically creepy, more than a bit unhinged.  Basically meeting Moriarty makes that entire scene for me.

Sherlock: People have died.

Yes I really love the part where they are walking away as the Lestrade and crew try to figure out who tried to kill the cabby. It was like the beginning of their friendship was verified and we just know there are going to be many adventures to come.

well written and more emotions.  I am an emotional person and Sherlock does not really help that any.  At least I'm willing to admit it.  I definitely would not make a good female Mycroft equivalent in any Sherlock Holmes adaptation.

Have there been any other E's to enter the forum. I was out last night and I was with a friend who is an INTP and uh he was just like smiling shyly at me while I was carrying on a conversation with a table of strangers across from us. Where are the E's that like this show. I guess I'm just a strange Extrovert! But my E' personality type is not all that common, about 7% of the population I believe. Which is a lot of people but you know.

Posted

Maybe you are just unique, Jess! We may have a few E's around here for all I know, they just haven't announced themselves. I suspect, though, that this is just a more introverted activity; E's are more likely to be out having conversations with people they don't know, I's are more likely to be found huddling over a laptop, having ... er, conversations with people they don't know. Hm. That observation didn't end up quite where I thought it would...

Johnspec is an E a shy E but an E nonetheless. Not sure if he's looked at this thread yet (may ask him later about that).

That is not fair, you use Sherlock's face.

Here, they come with codes, you know the drill. Have fun!

Of course! That's my only weakness. :P

Lost? No way, at this point you probably have to pry my cold hand away from my phone to prevent me from coming here. I just had too much undesirable social interactions that tired me down, much more so than strenuous travelling and works.

Posted

Ah yes, social interaction ... it does use up rather a lot of energy, doesn't it? I always have to hide out somewhere after a big event or I get rather cranky.

Yes, it does. I dropped and slept like a drugged Sherlock's Christmas party guess. Don't remember physical activities that made me feel as tired, even extreme activities.

And like you said, it takes a lot of hide out time to recuperate. I am glad it I'm not alone. :p

Another favorite scene, but this must be quite popular. John learning about Mummy. XD
