Well, if they DO reveal a 3rd sibling, that means we might see BC's parents in another episode, and that would be lovely!

Moftiss do not generally seem to introduce characters without a good reason.  I can't think that "the other one" has already served his purpose and will be heard of no more.

Well, kinda.  Perhaps I should have said that the character has been "established."  For example, Harry Watson was mentioned in "Study in Pink," where Sherlock deduced her old cell phone that she'd given to John, so mentioning her has already served a purpose -- she might appear eventually, but not necessarily.  Mummy and Daddy Holmes appeared in "Empty Hearse," but for no apparent purpose -- so of course they had to be brought back, which they were in "Last Vow."  Now "the other one" has been mentioned, but that served very little purpose, so I fully expect him/her to crop up again, perhaps in the flesh.

My favorite theory for the third sibling is the one where Moriarty is Sherlock and Mycroft's half-brother. I like it for various reasons. First of all, it does not require the introduction of a new character, and I think the show has characters a-plenty already, a bit too many, actually. Then, it would explain why Moriarty is so similar to Sherlock in character and brilliance. Moriarty is like Sherlock gone wrong. It could also explain why Moriarty resents Sherlock and thinks he "owes him a fall". Imagine, for example, that Jim was the result of that affair of Sherlock's father that has been hinted at. If Sherlock discovered that his father had been unfaithful and pointed it out to Mummy and / or Mycroft, Jim's mother could have gotten into some kind of trouble, which might have made Jim's life unpleasant. Sherlock wouldn't have to know that the grown-up Moriarty is that half-brother for the theory to work, and Mycroft may only have found out along the way.

So you think "the other one" is already dead?  Or do you think that Moriarty is still alive?  Or were there identical twins?  Or -- ?  (This way lies madness!    )

I don't think anything, I don't know what to think or expect. I've given up on predictions for this series. But I can tell you what I'd like, and that would be for Moriarty to be the "other one" and be already dead, yes. Because I really don't want another Holmes sibling, and I do want Moriarty's death in The Reichenbach Fall to be real. And no twins, please!

Oh he's dead.  What I find interesting is that it's been about 3 years that he's been dead since that animated gif shows up - and it shows up JUST when Sherlock is leaving.  So someone has inside information that he IS leaving and is baiting him back, knowing England will always need him and thereby creating a need for him.  Mycroft is still my #1 suspect on that (lol) but it remains to be seen.  Clearly the information that Sherlock is being sent away is supposed to be within the confines of Mycroft's colleagues, and yet that timing is not coincidental.  There's a leak or a mole at the top.

Then again, maybe Sherlock orchestrated it himself... with Wiggins' help.

Well, remember when I pointed out how in TRF it starts and ends with John at his therapist's, hinting that the entire episode was from John's point of view. John wasn't present at the rooftop scene before the fall, and he didn't find out that Moriarty was dead until it was in the news, so maybe the rooftop scene was half what he knew from the papers and half what he remembered. And we all know that the human visual memory is only 60-something% accurate.

I think your "it's all a flashback" idea is intriguing, but seeing as how Sherlock doesn't seem to have told John much of anything about what happened on the roof, I'm still having trouble figuring out how John would have come up with all those details.  Likewise Sherlock's "if I weren't everything" scene with Molly.

Not saying that Moftiss mightn't go that way -- but if so, they've got a heap of explaining to do!  (And while they're at it....)

Bendy, Sherlock somehow had the same exact perspective of John, when he relayed the story to Anderson. So no go my friend. You tried it though- you tried it.

I don't recall a third sibling when Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the books.

Oh, heavens, no!  The various other siblings are all from fan lore and pastiches.  It took Conan Doyle's Holmes many years to admit that he had even the one brother!

That family sure had some disfunctional problems but even in canon when they were together....which wasn't even a fraction of the time in Sherlock...they did seem to be at least cordial to each other.

There wasn't. Later adaptions brought up theory of an older brother. You may want to start @ page one of this thread pawes.

Copied from an article.

So how will the two arch enemies face each other in 'Sherlock' season 4? Executive producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss previously teased that they already know what to do with the supposedly-dead baddie.

Moffat said, "We've had what we're going to do with Moriarty in place from before the second season. Exactly what we're going to do. I remember talking it through with Andrew Scott, who plays Moriarty. Wait and see what's going to happen."

Mark Gatiss also joked about asking Thor's Tom Hiddleston to play the third Holmes brother in the upcoming season. Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Gatiss and Tom Hiddleston would make an impressive trio.

But maybe many of the details were logical assumptions. See, people have the tendency to assume things because they don't like not knowing. And maybe a bit of dramatization because, well, that's how a lot of John's blog posts are.

So if Mark is joking about asking someone to play the third sibling. May we assume they will definitely introduce the sibling in season four. Maybe in episode 2 or 3?
