Who the heck is John Barrowman? :D

John Barrowman is maybe mostly known from his role in Doctor Who and Torchwood, where he plays Captain Jack Harkness.

 

He's also known as this guy from Arrow.

That's something that puzzles me: why none of our PBS stations show Doctor Who, except some of the old Pertwee ones. Although I'm so far behind now I'm finding it difficult to care.

So, as Detective has answered already who John Barrowman is - yes, he is in Torchwood (he's so funny, you just have to love him! ), and I have seen the series (I even own the DVD Box! :D ), but I have missed out all the Dr.Who (!) because I don't know when it was on telly ever - and the DVDs mostly cost a fortune, so I hope someday I will be finally able to at least watch one season of Dr.Who as it seems I missed out on something...I just would not know which one to start with - is there one Doctor that I should definitely not miss?? And where I can follow it without knowing all about Dr.Who first? Like a 'Dr.Who for Dummies?' :P

 

Oh yes, you reminded me - I loooove Tom Hanks movies, since like - ever! Think the first ones I saw were 'Big' and 'Turner & Hooch' (love the dog!!) and since then mostly all of them. Just because he's a fun actor to watch, and also great in serious characters such as 'Cast away' or 'Da Vinci Code'.

With George Clooney it's rather - I don't fancy him at all, but I like it when he plays the baddie, such as 'From Dusk till dawn'...then he's cool. :lol:

I think you as a fangirl should definitely not miss the tenth doctor aka David Tennant, also Matt Smith's 11th Doctor is something you would love. ;)

Note that the season numbers Detective is quoting are from the reboot. You might also want to check out the 4th, 5th, and 7th Doctors (Tom Baker, Peter Davison, and Sylvester McCoy) from the original show that the Moftisses knew as kids.

Exactly, but I don't think that the average tv viewer would enjoy the Classics so much.

The "new" Doctor Who series is more relatable due to all those fancy special effects (not so much in the Christopher Eccleston era) and mostly because of color.

Because some of the classic era is in black and white.

 

So I think if somebody wants to start with Doctor Who, Season 1 episode 1 (Rose), or Season 5 episode 1 (the eleventh hour) would be a good start.

But you of course can also start watching the Classics.

I adored Tom Baker's Doctor, but I agree, I think the "classic" doctors would seem pretty silly to a modern audience. If you haven't seen the Doctor before, I would stick to the reboot versions.

But if you'd like a taste of classic Who, I would recommend Tom Baker's #4. He seems to be the one most people think of, and I believe the show was in color by then.

I have heard about Sylvester McCoy being also a doctor, yes - it would be interesting to see him in a different role, yet I only know him as Radagast in the Hobbit....

 

Thanks for all your advices, so I know now at least a little what to watch out for when I come aross some Who - DVDs on sale ;) ...

 

Was just popping in today, I'm now off to see the preview of 'Alice through the looking glass' :popcorn:, looking forward to it since weeks! Telling you tomorrow then in the 'recently watched movies' thread about it.... ;)

Perhaps I should mention that Peter Davison (#5) is to the best of my knowledge the only Doctor who's been in Sherlock (as the narrator for the planetarium show in "Great Game").

Confirming now Andrew Scott officially as a favourite male actor (as if he hadn't been before, but I have seen not much more of him before than Moriarty...and now he already was in two recent films I have seen, haha....) :

He looks way madder than the Hatter as a doctor in 'Alice...'

If he would have had more screen time I would have had to ponder if I should laugh or be scared....so the time was just too short, and I thought 'hey look, it's Andrew Scott, and today he's a crazy doctor', just like the short scene where I first recognized a voice, and when they finally zoomed in on the bearded and crowned face, I realized that Richard Armitage was also in the film, as a king...(again. ) ) the costume and make up people surely had done a good job with the wild hair and all, but it's so him that crazy smile, and I have to say it wasn't really Moriarty, haha...more...happy, I think. (probably was in training before with Chessur.... :lol: )
