I agree about Jim Carrey, he's a bit OTT for my liking, and although I liked The Truman Show I think I might have found it better if there was another actor cast. I liked him in The Mask though.

Did you ever watch the film "The Number 23" that's a Carrey film but it's not comedic in any way, it's very dramatic actually and it's one of my favourite Carrey films actually :)

Yes, I liked it when I first saw it but when I tried to watch it again a few years later I couldn't get into it at all. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood or something.

I've always liked him, then I've not seen that much of him!

I liked him a lot at first, when he was something new and different. We have several of his movies on DVD. But now I've gotten kinda indifferent.

By contrast, I still like Adam Sandler a lot -- though I'm apparently lucky to have missed his early stuff. First thing i ever saw him in was Fifty First Dates. As contrasted to Carrey's sheer goofiness, he's sort of "goofy with a heart."

Oh God, I can't stand Adam Sandler, especially his newest offerings which I don't find remotely funny. I really like The Wedding Singer, didn't mind Fifty First Dates or Just Go With It, but most of his stuff I hate.

Every so often he hits a clunker, but I've liked most of what I've seen. (Not that I watch a lot of movies.). The two most recent I've seen are Blended and Jack & Jill, which were both OK. My favorite is still Fifty First Dates, but I also like Wedding Singer, Click, and Zohan quite a bit. Haven't seen Just Go With It.

I have just finished to watch the first (and unique, for now) season of "Stranger things". That's not a film, it's a series, but I though I absolutely had to recommend this series to you!!!

In general, it's a bit scary, at first a little like an horror film, but then it becomes more like a thriller. It talks about some secret experiments with a mysterious girl with supernatural powers and parallel worlds. It's also very strong from an emotive point of view, because the plot involves deep themes, such as frienship, family, love but also fear, pain and loss.

Watch it!!

Arcadia, I'm glad someone feels the same about Jim Carrey.

He irritates the hell out of me, and his annoying image sticks, so it was bothering me during the movie and I wished they would cast someone else. Still Truman is his best movie. Plus I love Ed Harris.

Oh yes, I love Ed Harris, I always felt bad that he never seemed to quite reach the A-list. Such a good actor.

We finally got around to watching Starter for 10 tonight, and what I want to know is this:

The background for the main menu consists of clips from the quiz show, with Cumberbatch & McAvoy's team playing.  So how come that never happens?  Not just that they don't show it in the movie, but it apparently doesn't even happen in that universe, due to them getting into a fight just before they're supposed to go in.

I feel like demanding my money back.  :wtf:

I've watched the movie and there is a 'televised' quiz show that they do because Mark Gatiss' character is the host of the show. So I'm confused, was there supposedly a quiz round before the televised version because I thought Benedict's character was sporting the black eye in the televised show.

Posted

That's what I expected, but it wasn't on our DVD, at any rate.  We were so puzzled by this that we went back and fast-forwarded through a good bit of the movie, so I can state with some degree of confidence that the only quiz scenes are as follows:

1.  Clips on the main menu, showing the Cumberbatch-McAvoy team having a bad time of it.

2.  The first scene in the movie, showing McAvoy as a kid, watching University Challenge with his father.

3.  The video-tape of "last year's" match that Cumberbatch shows his teammates.

The only quiz-related scenes we saw after that were Cumberbatch, McAvoy and crew arriving at the studio, encountering the same team that Cumberbatch had previously lost to, followed by a spat between Cumberbatch and McAvoy that turns into a fistfight.  Just as McAvoy gets punched, the screen goes black, and the next thing we see is McAvoy sitting glumly waiting for his mother to come get him.

So I can't figure out whether those scenes on the main menu were supposed to have occurred between the punch and the glum sitting, but were not shown for some reason that I fail to understand, or they occurred only in some parallel universe where the fight did not occur.  Or we have a defective DVD.

I think you have a defective DVD as they do show the Challenge with the current Bristol Team going against the rivals post fight because there is a bit during the Challenge that leads up to the glum McAvoy character.

Doctor Strange - 9/10

Finally saw this at our tiny theater. It was brilliant! I didn't have much to except, so I didn't really know what was the plot in the movie. It was quite creative and somehow an unique superhero movie.

And of course BC with a cape.

Thanks! I had also seen a comment in one of the customer reviews about the American (Region 1) version having some slightly different scenes* due to censoring. Our copy was too old to return for another American copy anyhow, so we have ordered a used copy of the British (Region 2) version.

* such as the scene where

Brian inexplicably gets the munchies after inhaling twice from what appears (in the American version) to be an ordinary cigarette

Funny how things are censored on DVD, I thought that was more if it was on TV

I think it depends on what rating they're going for. There isn't quite a one-to-one correspondence between the British and American rating systems, so sometimes they need to fiddle a bit. Plus there may be some things that are simply not allowed in movies over here.

But you're right, that's even more the case for television, specifically broadcast television.

Fantastic Beasts #1 8/10

There were a few scenes that to me didn't belong in a movie tied to the hp universe regardless of if the movie is designed to get the original watchers who are now mostly grown to keep coming back for more. There was an amazing twist in there that I wasn't expecting. You'll have to watch to find out as I ain't saying what it is.

Also a couple of brief cameos from some Sherlock people: Gemma Chan (Soo Lin) and Todd Boyce (Neilson)

The Silence of the Lambs. Um... I find that very hard to rate. It's probably a very good film within its own genre. Great acting and all that. Don't quite understand why something like this qualifies as entertainment, though.

It's based on a novel that I think might fall under the category of a psychological thriller. Apparently some thought it was a good idea to turn it into a movie.

I agree. Maybe it's a bootleg copy?

We got it from Amazon. I think it may have been one of their created-on-demand discs, though, and I've heard that those are defective more often than the mass-produced ones.

Posted

Oi. Thanks for the tip. I'll stick to buying mine at Wal-Mart!

That's no guarantee either, since there are always a few defective ones. And if Amazon is selling the on-demand discs, that's because they aren't available in mass-produced form -- so Walmart won't have 'em.

We've bought their on-demand discs before, and those were fine.

I unnerstan', I was mostly kidding anyway. So do they guarantee their product? I.e., can you return it for another?

Just saw Fantastic Beasts. I think I am a little in love with Newt... But what was this major plot twist that everybody was talking about? Did I miss something?
