Recently watched movies

I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it sounds interesting.  Also, I've seen (and enjoyed) most of the cast in other productions, meaning that they must be pretty high-profile people, since I don't see all that many things.

But of course it's on Netflix.  *sigh*

I've missed out on several programs on Netflix. My nephew was letting me use his account but sharing with other households has been banned and I'm not paying for another streaming service.

I know what you mean!  Seems like every movie studio and every broadcast network now has its own streaming service.  There must be at least a dozen at this point (I've lost track), and each must be paid for separately -- and of course each movie/show that I'm interested in is on a different service.  Besides which, if your internet service isn't the best, you can spend half your time watching it buffer.

I wouldn't mind so much if they'd at least offer DVDs eventually.

At least in Germany, most services offer one-month subscriptions. So I mostly buy one month, watch, what I find interesting and then hop to another service. Watching Netflix, Amazon, Sky and Disney this way.

As far as I know, all of the US streaming services are effectively available by the month -- you sign up and then cancel before the month ends.  You have to given them your credit card number, though, which makes me a bit nervous because we've sometimes had difficulty cancelling a service.

I use PayPal for all the transactions. I think once or twice it happened that the service wasn't cancelled, but it's not so much money, definitely less than paying several services parallelly.
Amazon btw. offers instant canceling and they give you a partial refund. Don't know if it's permanent or they just try a new thing.

Amazon does seem to honor cancellation requests very reliably.  But we've had enough trouble with a few other companies that our standard mode is caution.

We used to have a Paypal account, but they cancelled it without us asking, and without even notifying us.  So we figure phooey on 'em.

Has anybody seen Coyote vs. Acme?  It's sort of a feature-length Road Runner cartoon mixed with live action, wherein the Coyote *finally* gets fed up with all those Acme devices blowing up in his own face instead of destroying the Road Runner, and decides to sue the company.    IMDb has a trailer that looks pretty good.

We haven't seen it yet (don't much go to theaters anymore), but we're tempted.  (Also hoping it'll come out on DVD sooner or later, but with our luck it'll merely go to streaming.)

Are/were the Road Runner cartoons shown outside the US?

Yes, but while they were rare in Austria our neighbors the Germans had them regularly back then. Nowadays, with streaming, everything is everywhere anyway.

Come to think of it, they wouldn't have needed translation.  Except, well, what's German for "beep-beep"?   

Speaking of which, I'd love to know how they did the Roadrunner's beeps for this (to say nothing of the other cartoon characters' voices), now that Mel Blanc is gone.  Maybe they patched in some of his old beeps, or maybe there's now an AI Mel Blanc?

Thanks.  If the torch is ever to be passed, now would be the time.  Lessee, IMDb lists Eric Bauza as voicing Bugs Bunny, Charlie Dog, Daffy Duck, Dr. Lorre, Elmer Fudd, Foghorn Leghorn, Gossamer, Porky Pig, Road Runner, and Tweety, which presumably covers all the Mel Blanc voices.  (I didn't recognize some of those character names, but according to the internet, they were also originally voiced by Blanc.)

YouTube has a bunch of interviews with Bauza, including him doing some of the voices.

No I haven’t. I barely watch movies lately, only very selected few. I heard it’s good?

Have you guys watched The Odyssey? What do you think?

I always like Nolan brothers’ work but I knew nothing about the tale/poem except a big ass horse. I thought I would give it a pass because Greek mythology is not my thing and many controversies around the movie, but mostly because it’s not my interest. Then I happened to accompany my mom somewhere, we needed to kill a few hours, the cinema ticket was $5, and it was an empty theatre.

And I enjoyed it. A lot. I think it’s very well made and I’m not sure if there will be something like this again. Three hours well spent. I guess he remains my favorite director.

The only Odyssey-type movie I've ever seen was a semi-modernized version called "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" described on the internet as "a 2000 satirical comedy-drama musical film" (Wikipedia) wherein "Three depression era convicts (George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson) escape a Mississippi chain gang and head off in search of buried treasure" (IMDb).  One YouTube channel called it "The Odyssey with Idiots."  I found it oddly interesting, but Alex just thought it was stupid.

I take it the movie you saw was a bit truer to Homer's version?

Carol, I hope you are doing well!

To be honest, I don’t know anything about Homer’s poem. Didn’t learn about it at school, and I’m not really into poetry. However, from what I read, there are many creative liberties taken. So, watching it without knowing anything actually enhanced my experience.

 

Does anyone watch The Traitors? It’s some kind of murder mystery if we squint, and similar to mafia game where players need to identify the traitors between them and get them out of the game.

I like it because of the strategy. So far, most seasons are filmed in Scotland, in a castle. I have watched all US seasons, some UK and Canada seasons, and I believe some Australia or New Zealand? One of those were not filmed in a castle.

The setting and the ambience are pretentious, but it’s fitting somehow. I’m more interested in the strategies than the challenges. After all, I started watching because of Survivor players who were cast in Traitors. I still watch Survivor because I like strategy game.

Me too/neither.  But "O Brother" put in enough hints that even I noticed -- like they had the singing ladies in the water, whatever they were called -- looks it up -- oh, right, the Sirens.  And George Clooney's character was called Ulysses Something and his girlfriend/wife's name was Penny (presumably short for Penelope).

(Besides, our friend Barry had already told me that he was proud of himself for figuring out that it was a take-off on the Odyssey.  )

Kudos for Barry. I checked and it is based on Odyssey, including the cyclop, which is represented by one-eye salesman.

It's good 😊. I've read The odessy by Stephen Fry and Rick Riordan version of it in Greek heroes. But I'm still not tempted to see it
