What did Sherlock mean when he told Mary at Leinster Gardens that the police will see her face on the facade and reach conclusions?

Is it better to binge it from S1 or just dive to S4. I could watch S1-3 repeatedly many times back then (except SOT), it probably helps to remind me why I love it or it could make me more dissapointed with S4. How did you guys do the rewatch?

I rewatched S4 a couple times after it aired, and I started to rewatch the whole series a couple years ago .... and I think I would have preferred the latter approach, except I could never find enough time to do it properly (meaning, watching the next episode while I could still remember how I felt about the one before it.) Days and days would go by before I could find time to watch another episode, and then I'd fall asleep half way through, etc. .... that's what my life has been like for awhile, alas. At any rate, I just couldn't enjoy it as much if I couldn't watch it on some sort of schedule, I found.

But .... someday! I've promised myself. I just don't know when! Oooops, gotta run....

Personally, I watched S1 and S2 a couple times while trying to forget that anything ever came afterward (only watched S3 and Bride once, never could find the stomach for S4; Plaidder's Empty Houses is canon, as far as I'm concerned  ). But I'm wishing you the best of luck for many happy rewatchings.

So I don't need to feel guilty then!

But aren't you tempted to see S4 for yourself at least once in case you have different opinion?

Not sure whether I want to, though.  Maybe if there was a Series 5 on the way?

Ow, now I have new excuse! But seriously, it's been sometimes I want to see if years would change my mind, especially some particular scenes that I couldn't understand.

And.. I really miss Sherlock and John.

Me too -- but not as the dysfunctional team they were in Last Vow and much of S4.  I guess that's why my favorite "S4" episode is Abominable Bride.

Honestly, nope. S3 (Vow in particular) almost managed to make me forget what I loved about the show in the first place, and I've been trying my hardest to delete that season from my mind so I can enjoy S1 and S2 again. I have no reason to believe that it'd be anything but worse with S4, so really, I'm better off without having subjected myself to that imo.

Good call, I think.  I didn't like Vow either.  Empty Hearse wasn't exactly a bad episode, but the tone was considerably different from all prior ones, plus there was some pivotal stuff that may or may not have really happened -- not fair in a mystery show!

I think that's about where I am right now.   I have no enthusiasm for rewatching any of it.

Ironically I think they make very good team when they expose Mary in HLV and when they are facing Eurus in TFP.

Completely understand.

I feel the same for other scene in S4. They certainly have the talent to make controversial choices that push different buttons.

What they probably don't get is, the buttons they press is bit different in than other shows, I speak for myself at least, that Sherlock is so very personal to me, which is probably not the best way to approach watching something, but I can't help it. That's why I'm here and not in other show's forum.

OK, they still managed to work well together.  But they weren't getting along, on a personal basis, from the end of T6T till nearly the end of TFP.  That's what I meant by dysfunctional (guess I could have chosen a more literally-accurate word, though I'm still not sure what it would have been).  I feel uncomfortable when the two of them aren't getting along.  The short stretch in Hounds was manageable, but well over half of an entire series was *far* too long, in my opinion.

Yep. Same here.

You thought they weren't getting along in TFP? Interesting. I thought they were the closest they'd ever been in that episode. I can't remember either of them saying a single unkind thing to the other, or being anything but supportive of each other, which is certainly not true in any other episode. Aha, maybe that's why I find it somewhat boring! :D

At any rate, it is uncomfortable when they're not getting along, although I would argue that's rather the point; too comfortable is Dullsville. But I would never have watched the show if that was all it had consisted of, that's for sure.

She wanted to kill Magnussen

Actually it doesn't make sense.
She couldn't kill him because he had stuff on her.
We need to remember EVERYONE thought the Vaults were a real place.
If CAM died, Appledore could be found and opened, and many nasty secrets would come to light.
There is also a very elaborate text out there about what Mary wanted to achieve breaking into CAMs office, I'll see if I can find it.

That's why Sherlock wants to buy Mary's secrets from CAM with Mycroft's laptop. That's why he is so desperate as he realizes that the only way to destroy Appledore is to kill Magnusen.

Mary's doings may at least partially be fueled by fear of others. Because CAM's way was to hurt your loved ones, if he wanted to hurt you - just like in Lady Smallwood's case. With a child and a husband she were a threat for them by simply loving them. (Why she didn't think about it before is another thing)

Sorry, I don't recall the details, just that it was my impression they didn't make peace with each other till the end of TFP.  Sheesh, you gonna make me rewatch it?

Maybe it was only from late in T6T till late in TLD?  That would be bad enough.

I'm tempted, 😉 but I'll be merciful ... they reconciled with a hug and birthday cake at the end of TLD. In TFP they were lovey-dovey at every moment, as I recall.

I.e., they were only on the outs for one episode. I could argue they were also on the outs for most of both TRF and TEH, but I won't. :D At least John wasn't physically attacking Sherlock in TRF, although I'm not sure calling someone a "machine" is much better.......

OK, thanks -- I was remembering that scene as being an episode later.  That's apparently what I get for not rewatching for a few years.

But even if it was "only" one whole episode, it made me very uncomfortable.

I think that's from canon, so don't blame our John.

Tsk tsk and you call yourself a fan of John.

Gah!  I don't remember the birthday and call myself a fan of cake. Oh well.

Eh.. no?

I was called that before and remember being extremely proud.

Sherlock, John and Mycroft's dynamic is why I put TFP as my favorite of S4. We only get bits in the past and TFP is the whole episode. I also like little Mycroft.

Yeesh. I'm the one who's been largely absent from this forum for the past two years and yet I remember more about the show than you two chatterboxes. Tsk tsk. :P

I don't think he did it to Sherlock's face (or with such vehemence!) in canon though, did he?

At any rate, I never blame anything on John; it's all Moftiss's fault.

If he had, would he have mentioned it in print?   ;)

That's very sensible!  But some things can still be hard to watch.
