In "Blind Banker" at least, Sherlock does seem to be something of a linguist and historian -- but I don't recall any references to ancient history or archeology, so far. I suppose if there's an episode where he needs to be an expert in that sort of thing, we (and John) will suddenly find out that he is!

The blue skull is perhaps more "modern" looking, so maybe they thought it was more appropriate for a modern-day adaptation of the stories. I've been trying to decide which one goes best with the 221B color scheme, and have tentatively decided that it depends on which wall they wanted to hang it on.

It'll be interesting to see where they put it. It might show pretty well on that black and white Victorian wall paper in the setting room.

It will also be interesting to see what they do about Holmes' reported trip to modern day Persia and Mecca.

Actually, it looks like the skull has been on that very wall all along. There's a shot of Sherlock and John on Pinkerton's slide show, with the blue skull in the background. I'm not sure I ever really noticed it either -- guess I was kind of distracted by what was going on in front of it!

I don't understand. Are you referring to a canon story?

Yes, I guess I am. When Holmes comes back in "The Adventure of the Empty House" he tells Watson that he had been to Tibet, Persia, and even to Mecca.

Oh, of course. I see what you mean now. Yes, I wonder whether they'll work that into the episode.

From Sherlockology (*not* a spoiler):

SHERLOCK'S NEW VIOLIN - AN EXCLUSIVE CLOSER LOOK

violin1.jpg

Earlier today, Sherlock production designer Arwel Wyn Jones posted an image on his Twitter account that revealed the violin that Sherlock Holmes will be playing during Series Three, and Sherlockology is excited to provide a closer look at this crucial new prop.

All the images you see in this story are of the actual instrument selected for use on screen.

Before anyone panics, the need for a new violin in Series Three is not a plot point. Sherlockology has a promise to both our readers and the crew that produces the show that we will never impart plot spoilers ahead of a new episode's broadcast. Instead, the presence of this new instrument is needed purely from a production point of view, and a different violin has been used on each series of Sherlock.

See the Sherlockology web site for more photos and more information on Sherlock's violin(s).

Oo, that is a lovely instrument. I wonder whether they'll have Bond violinist Eos Chater back to school Ben again. Her blog is lovely. If you haven't read this, then I highly recommend her post following her work on Sherlock with Ben during the Reichenbach filming. He is a talented man, the speed with which he picked up her lessons.

There cannot be many women who can say they've tutored a man in the finer points of playing a violin while he was wearing only a bedsheet! Lucky girl... Her comment is priceless. I love Ben even more after reading this blog post. Ben really can play the damn violin after very few lessons. He is a perfectionist, and in her words "a lovely human being". Aww. Go read, you won't be disappointed.

That really is a great read, thank you so much for posting the link.  She sounds lovely, also.

Doesn't it always sound, as we read more and more about the people involved with this production, that each and every one is an exceptional person as well as an exceptional talent?

As you may have seen, the continuation of the article (on the Sherlockology web site) says, "...it's not yet been confirmed at present whether Eos Chater is returning to coach Benedict Cumberbatch...."

I thought I'd already seen it, but no, that was another piece (which was also interesting, but much briefer).  This is definitely worth the read.  And it's not just about Cumberbatch and the violin, either, it's got funny and interesting bits about other cast members and other aspects of filming.  Cool!

I would just like to state that for once I am grateful to be new to Sherlock fandom.  I got to binge watch Series 1 and 2 uninterrupted.  Waiting for Series 3 is agonizing for me, I can only imagine the pain of long time fans!

You and me both :). I saw a "500 days since the Reichenfall" blogpost somewhere the other day - I can't imagine the pain in that kind of waiting (though I guess we'll both learn how that feels between season 3 and 4 ).

I can't imagine the pain in that kind of waiting

Good job you weren't a Doctor Who fan in the 80s and 90s - we waited from 1989 to 1996 for the Seventh Doctor to become the Eighth Doctor (in the movie) then there wasn't any more Doctor Who on telly until 2005, though we did have some very good Eighth Doctor audios.

I hate the wait we have for new Sherlock, but at least I know I won't have to wait 16 years between tv series!

Ouch - that's tough, aely, being left dangling for 16 years ... was it even known that there would be another one or were you left with nothing but a faint hope that maybe someday, somehow, the series would continue?

Because I do know about that kind of waiting, I stumbled upon some book called A Game Of Thrones all the way back in 1996, and since it had a recommendation by Marion Zimmer Bradley on its first page, decided to pick it up (the jury's still out if that was a good move). Seventeen years later, the author, who has been dubbed

by fans, still shows no sign of finishing the sixth book, which isn't even the last one in the series, and the last two books didn't really move the plot forward to any great degree - the last book to do so was A Storm Of Swords, which came out in 2000. Ever since, we've been waiting for Tyrion to freaking meet Daenerys already :hugz:.

Still, waiting for Sherlock feels harder somehow ... maybe it's because I've become numb in regards to A Game Of Thrones over the years, though -_-.

eta: If you want to see how intense other people's feeling evoked by A Game Of Thrones still are, however, apparently *the* most memorable scene from book 3 (I swear I could hear that bloody music in the background when I read it) took place in the HBO show yesterday, and here are some reactions (could be spoilerish) by people who apparently hadn't been forewarned by the book. And the poor dears don't even have our trusty shock blanket.

The year and some months between each "season" is indeed hard. It seems endless. There is the thought of what happens if something happens and they can't get back to start or even finish the filming. It's just nerve wracking.

Positive thoughts ... positive thoughts ... positive thoughts ....

We had books, audios and a very tenacious belief that one day it WOULD return to television as the idea of Doctor Who was just too good to abandon forever, even if we had no proof that such a thing would ever happen - Doctor Who did not just lie down and die. Some of the people who wrote those books in the 'Lost Years' are now involved in the production of Doctor Who, as writers and other things and The Moff is renowned for being a massive fanboy himself (I think Russell T Davies was too).

I love this pic of The Moff as a kid (his son looks very like him)
