I don't know where to stop! There's so much I love. Basically, I go for rockish indie/alternative with a pinch of electro, mainly minmal, triphop and some old school dance. General theme in my favourite songs would be melancholy and Infinite Sadness.

I've seen most of these bands live by now, mostly through the lucky invention of multi day music festivals, and consider music and concerts a huge daily part of my life - although being married to a club DJ and guitar player, it would probably have to be!

Cool, I like a lot of those too, I'll have to check out the others. It's so hard to find new music I like, I don't have a decent radio station in my area.

Yeah, trying to find good music on the radio is pretty frustrating...

I got most of my music from my family and friends. Where they found it I have no idea. Otherwise, I think soundtracks of movies you like are a good source. (And sometimes even of movies you don't like all that much).

Yup! I loathe the Twilight movies but the first one had a fantastic song by Civil Twilight, so glad it was at the beginning or I would never have heard of them.

I spend a lot of time (when I have the time) following up on the suggestions provided by iTunes, it's slow and has a low success rate but it's better than nothing. I recently discovered The xx and House of Fire that way, love 'em.

What song is that, may I ask?

The very first Twilight movie wasn't actually that bad, in my humble opinion (okay, yes, it was bad, but not as bad as I expected and it was certainly a lot better than any of the sequels). I remember a friend and I had this theory that it would turn out in the end that Edward wasn't real, and that Bella was insane and had made him up to be her perfect fantasy boyfriend. I still think our idea was a lot better than where the story actually went!

Hang on, gotta look up the title....

Ah! Sorry, it's not Civil Twilight at all! it's "Full Moon" by the Black Ghosts. LUV that song. By Civil Twilight I really like "Letters from the Sky" and "Doorway". I'm like Bendy, I tend to pick and choose songs I like more than following a particular band.

The only thing I know about where the Twilight story actually went is from seeing the ads for the movies, and I agree; your idea was better!

If anyone's looking for something a little different, my brother (who DOES have a good radio station!) introduced me to African music. Here's a few I really love:

Diarabima by Kerfala Kante (currently the favorite thing on my playlist)

A Song for Women by Baaba Maal

Almost anything by Salif Keita, but my favorite right now is La Difference

Tenere Taqqim Tossam by Tinariwen

Makambo by Geoffrey Oryema

Mahini Me by Ali Farka Toure

Hey, thanks for directing my attention to that song! It is good, yeah.

Twilight was (well is) odd. It had definite potential to be this really great, totally F***ed up insanely dark angst-ridden teenage death-wish fest, and I could have taken the books in the tub with me, turned on Evanescence and pretended I was ten years younger. But it seems the author has no clue how sinister most of her plot and characters are. She just kept pouring holy goo over everything and simply erasing or denying the problems she herself created earlier, changing the rules of her universe and completely brainwashing protagonists if that was what it took, and finally creating this dreadful, over the top perfect happy ending that made no sense whatsoever. I mean, nothing ever had any consequences in her story!

On to more pleasant things:

Oh god, now I want a huge wide-screen TV, all three extended editions of Lord of the Rings, and another vacation to watch them in one go.

Nice! This particular song is little bit pop for my taste but I love his voice, will look for more. Thanks!

Welcome.

Hmmm, while thinking about nice songs from movies, I remembered this:

I love Juno. And I like the way they sing this as if they weren't singers, but ordinary people just kind of humming along. Lyrics aren't bad, either...

I have a strange tendency to really like break-up songs, which is very odd, because I've never broken up with anybody. But I still empathize with that mix of hurt, anger, snark and heartache.

You've never been either the dumper or the dumpee?  Good heavens, I don't know whether to envy you or feel sorry for you!  By the time I was the age I take you to be -- well, lemme think now -- I'd already dumped one steady boyfriend and been dumped by two others.

It's an interesting experience -- heartache and insult if you're the dumpee, but also exhilaration (due to having a whole world of other possibilities now open).  And if you're the dumper, then relief and guilt.  Or at least that's how it was for me.

Well, I've been unhappily in love, but I've only ever had one real relationship, and it continues to this day, for which I am very, very grateful. I do hope it'll last. Have absolutely no clue how I'd be supposed to go about finding a new partner, for one thing. How did I ever get the one I have? He got me, I guess. Something like that.

God, that sounds unromantic. So sorry. Be assured that I am really truly deeply in love, only I can't go on about it in a public place like this, I guess. Here, I'll find some nice love song to do the work for me:

This is one of the few die-hard romantic love songs that I truly like. I think I heard it somewhere when I was very, very little and it got imbedded into my subconscious somehow.

You're really lucky, to find a good relationship without going through some duds first.  Seems like the best ones do just sorta "happen," but I'd been around the block quite a few times before it happened to me.

I love that song too.  Oddly enough I don't recall ever hearing PP&M sing it before (though I've seen them live several times), but it's a very sweet and joyful rendition, and I like it.  Thanks for posting that video.

My all-time favorite version is sung by sung by Mike Kobluk of the Chad Mitchell Trio.

Unfortunately, that link won't work for me, because of Germany's insane regulations regarding music online, but I'll just believe you that it was a good rendition.

"The first time" was on one of PPMs albums, I forget which one. I heard it on vinyl when I was just a toddler. That album is actually the first recorded music I remember. I later had a cassette made of it and listened to it in bed when I couldn't sleep. Somehow, their voices have a very soothing effect on me. I listen to their songs and am somehow reassured that yes, there is good in the world and everything will be all right some day.

That IS nice. My fave version is still the one by Gordon Lightfoot (from his wonderful first album). Of course, my favorite version of just about any song is the one by Gordon Lightfoot..... saw him in concert once, just as good as you'd expect him to be.

And here's Gordo's lovely "tribute" to First Time .... The Last Time I Saw Her Face.

 Sitting on my bed in an empty apartment listening to music for the tired and stressed, I wonder whether I am the only one who has guilty pleasures when it comes to listening - songs you like a lot, but would find too embarrassing to put on a playlist that your social circle might see or turn up loud enough for the neighbors to hear. For me, this is one of those:

I know it's terribly kitschy, but... I find it very relaxing and comforting.

You say terribly kitschy as if that were a bad thing :P.

With my sincere apologies to all non-German speakers, but there's a perfect song about this from an Austrian band, STS, called Überdosis G'fühl (an overdose of feels):

This is an absolute old favorite of mine:

I'm still a bit sad I didn't use this for my wedding waltz. But... I didn't dare, somehow. I'm sure my parents and in-laws would have been a bit shocked, and also, it's pretty fast and there wouldn't really have been enough room for us to turn in the little place where we held our little celebration.

But some day... I still think it would make a perfect wedding song... Maybe I'll find a way to sneak it into some anniversary.
