I'm no expert, but I don't see how the light and outlets could be on the same circuit, unless I'm misunderstanding the situation.  Is the light fixture working 100% normally as far as you can see?  And the outlets are all 100% dead?

Posted

Yep but they are on the same circuit in the breaker.

Posted

Are you going by how the breakers are labeled?  Or have you previously tried turning off that particular breaker, and it makes the fixture and all those outlets go off?

Posted

We turned off each breaker trying to figure out which goes where as those that aren't labeled appliances & furnaces say receptacles & lights or just receptacles. They are all properly labeled for rooms now now.

Oh, good -- so you actually know.  (A lot of people don't.)

I just checked with my resident engineer, and Alex says that probably means there's a broken wire somewhere, like maybe a mouse got into your wall and chewed on it.  The fixture is apparently closer to the breaker than the outlets are -- so the electricity gets to the fixture but not to the outlets.  That's not the way Alex worded it, but that's my translation.

Depending on how the wires are routed from the circuit breaker (inside my bedroom against the outside wall & I know the wires are usually loaded into the box from the top), yes the fixture would be closer.  And as much as I haven't seen evidence of mice inside our place, rodent (mice or otherwise) activity in the area outside does exist.

And the odd thing about the outlets is that they are on opposite sides of the room.

Posted

Well, if there's a break in the wire anywhere between the fixture and the first outlet, that'd take both outlets out of the circuit.  And it wouldn't have to be mouse damage.  It could be simply a borderline connection that finally failed completely due to corrosion, loss of physical contact, etc.

If you don't know of a good, reliable electrician, ask your family and friends if they know one.  Or you could ask for recommendations from any reliable service people you may happen to know -- I figure the good people (plumbers, electricians, et al.) probably know each other.  Or you could check Yelp.  I generally consider the yellow pages to be my last resort -- though I did find a good appliance repair service that way.

My dad knows of an electrician that he will be calling.  It is one that I have heard of and don't remember if that person worked on their house or not.  If 1 of a few people (that I know) from my parent's church recommended the electrician, then I would trust the electrician.

Yes, I'd always trust word-of-mouth over somebody's ad.

Waaah! I just found out that a movie theater near me (well, sort of near me... near enough) will be showing the recording of Frankenstein with Cumberbatch and Miller next week and: I can't go because I have to work that night and nobody will change shifts with me! WAAAAHHHH!

Ahem. There, there. Breathe... that thing will be available on DVD some day, won't it. (Maybe it already is?). Much better to invest the energy I use for complaining to pester said movie theater about showing Sherlock on the big screen some day. I mean, if they're catering to fans of good English actors... Just saying...

Maybe I can send my 12 yo.  He's a green belt in Kung Fu.  2 more tests until he's a brown belt then it's on to black belt.

Jump on top of them and when they fall backward in an attempt to crush you, get off!

I think in the long run Toby wants the job.  She won't be able to see Frankenstein if she's in jail for assault.  And she won't be able to afford Frankenstein without a job (At least too easily).

It won't be T.o.b.y in jail, it'd be me and Arcadia! :P

And since you 2 don't use your actual pictures for your profile let alone your real names, she could claim it was 2 random people she had never met before and get of Scott free.

I think you're rather overestimating my natural agility  but what the heck, I'm game if you are.

Have you tried telling them why you'd like to swap shifts?  Maybe they don't realize that it's something you could really only do at that specific time.

Well, we're talking about a Friday night and about people who have little kids, whereas I only want to go to the cinema. I mean, it's not like they're actually going to be on stage in Germany, it's just a big-screen showing of the film they made of the production, with Benedict Cumberbatch as creature and Miller as Frankenstein. It's only on for that one night, but of course I could (and probably will) just buy the thing on DVD whenever it's available and watch it at home.

You're all so sweet for sympathizing... And you're right, I do care about my job (an awful lot, truth be told - I'm a teeny bit Sherlockish that way), and I like most of my colleagues, so save your strength for more "deserving" people, I'd say. But thanks anyway. :P

Okay, that will give me time to practice my people-thumping skills. Just in case. :D

Don't count on there being any DVD. It could happen, but there's been no official word, so there's absolutely no guarantee.

And if you downplay this event yourself, none of those nice people you work with will have any idea that it's at all important to you. I would encourage you to let them know there's a one-night-only event that you're very interested in attending.

So today I've had a piece of music in my head most of the day.  A decent piece of music that I can't place where it's from.  It's possibly from Sherlock, or maybe a movie that I've seen a few times recently, or possibly a video game that my son plays when we are watching a set of twins.

Then there's this whole thing of sleep happening soon, hopefully.  I went from that piece of unknown music lisited above to Rossini's Thieving Magpies to Orpheus' Can Can back to Thieving Magpies (I think or I'm on the track after Orpheus on the Hooked on Classics record I listed to for hours on end as a child. Seriously nothing on my iTunes comes close to the numbers of time each of the pieces on that record have been played).  Here's to hoping that my brain will shut down and I will be able to sleep as I need to be awake in about 7 hrs.

The piece of music: "How He Did It" or whatever the correct words are from Series 3 soundtrack where Anderson is telling Lestrade how Sherlock survived the jump..

Well, at least now you won't have to lie awake trying to identify the music!
