I've had glasses since I was 19 (not sure how managed that one with my family history of needing glasses by 10th grade). I've thought about contacts but decided that with my sensitive skin/eyes that I'd stick with glasses. And I also like Sam in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. She puts her colleague in his place when she goes back to her "nerdy" look.

A pet peeve of mine is those teen girl magazines that allegedly "know" what guys want in a girl. Like, apparently guys like any size boobs and butts. That's stupid. If I'm gonna date a guy, he better like it when I get McDonalds, put it on fine china, and serve it with chocolate milk in wine glasses.

If it's any consolation, things are actually improving. When I was in high school, we got a girl's magazine as part of our Home Ec class. I remember one advice column that advised us not to act too smart, because then the boys wouldn't like us. Even then I thought that advice was a load of crap -- even though what they said about boys was probably true.

Please tell me that girl's magazines don't give out that kind of advice any more!

I'd be surprised if they dared. But it seems that most girls figure this out for themselves, anyway. When I was in school, there were a lot of really clever, talented girls who, I think deliberately, played dumb the second a half-way attractive boy entered the room and without any outward prompting at all voluntarily reduced themselves to a pretty face and a pair of tits. Some of these ladies had boyfriends who had no clue their lovers could paint or play a musical instrument, what they liked to read or whether they had any opinion on what was in the news. I always thought that was so terribly sad.

As for "what guys want", I'd be very, very surprised if they all wanted the same thing.

See, I want to be able to wear glasses and not hate them.  I want to look smart!  I've been blind as a bat since 3rd grade and got contacts around 7th grade? and haven't looked back.  I own a super cute pair of hot pink plastic frames that make me feel awesome, but then I put them on and remember how much they annoy me.

Yah, that's my problem as well, I don't mind how I look in glasses, I just hate the way they feel on my face. But I hated the way contacts felt in my eyes even more, so I'm stuck with glasses. Don't trust laser surgery.

Damn straight!  Nobody comes anywhere near my eyes without a far better excuse than that.

I've worn glasses since I was eleven, and actually like wearing them -- being able to see, and all.  I tried contacts some years back, and didn't like the way they felt at all -- but thought maybe it was worth it to look nicer.  Then somebody asked me why I was squinting and blinking all the time, and I've never bothered with them since.

I think I actually look better with glasses on. They give my face a little distinction. I love my glasses. I didn't get them until I was 18, and I'll never forget that wonderful revelation when suddenly the world

went into focus and it was all so clear and detailed. I still have my first frames, and they feel like a part of my body. I'll be devastated if they ever break.

Contacts are so weird and individual!  I know my mom hasn't had any luck the few times she's tried contacts.  I've never been able to feel the contacts on my eyes once they're there, unless they're either dirty or have a tear in them.

I'm so jealous, I could never have them in more than 20 minutes before I started feeling like I had sand in my eyes. Struggled for 5-6 years, gave up. But now I lose my glasses all the time because I take them off whenever I can. Sigh. It's so unfair.

Did anyone ever watch Mystery Science Theater? Did you see the one with the "how a girl should dress and behave" short? "Conform! Conform!!! CONFORM!!!!" I miss that show.

Pardon me while I go search YouTube for that clip.....

Haven't seen that episode but love mst3k (now rifftrax). Saw their video Mr. B Natural. A great mix of music and a guy trying to get a girl if I remember correctly (been almost 17 years since I watched it).

Rifftrax is the same thing? I saw it listed but hadn't heard of it. Some of the same people, or just a similar concept?

To be honest, it was Joel that made the show work for me, I gradually stopped watching after he left.

Can't find the episode I'm thinking of, nutz.

Whoever was the last human on mst3k plus the robot/puppets is my understanding from a friend.

Okay, now I see, Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy are involved. Huh. I never knew!

I love my slow computer. It started going into screen saver mode while I ran an errand. It is now taking what feels like 10 minutes to wake up :( and as I type this, it finally woke up. (Yes I need to back up and reformat the crazy thing.)

Uff, my leg keeps bothering me. I end up limping intermittently, not enough for it to get in the way of my daily life, but enough for people to notice. They think I'm faking it, but my leg legit hurts for no reason now and then.

That's not fun.  I've been through enough, mostly joint, pain to understand how it's there, annoying, yet you can function. Talk with your parents and be persistent and honest about it.  They may eventually come around if they don't believe right away.

Right, if it persists, you ought to have it looked at.  Is it always the same part of the same leg?  Have you ever injured it?

That sounds annoying. Nothing makes pain worse than people refusing to take it seriously. I remember when I was little, I got terrible headaches, but some flaming idiot told my parents that children don't get headaches, so they didn't believe me and thought I was just making a fuss to get attention or something. Horrible.

Have your leg looked at, by all means! Maybe nobody will ever find out what is wrong with it, but on the other hand, maybe the explanation is something really simple and mendable. You'll never know until you try to find out... And there's nothing to lose, is there. It hurts now, and you don't know why. That's about the worst outcome you could get from a visit to the doctor, so what have you got to loose?

Oh, and here's something to tell people who accuse you of faking: Pain is always real. It's something the brain makes, and while it sometimes does that for no good reason, that doesn't mean the pain isn't there.

I realise it's a few pages back now but I smiled when I read this:

And never forget nor forgive the tyranny of fake pockets!

You may want to talk to @Banshee about that one, It's one of her pet hates!

Hey, Tim -- say hi to Banshee for us!  Maybe she can drop in sometime.  :)

Well, it first started when I was jogging in gym for the warm-up exercise, and then mid-stride my right knee started hurting. It was sort of half-stinging, half-burning. The coach let me sit out for the rest of the jog, but now it still hurts now and then for no reason.

Okay. Thanks for the advice, T.o.b.y.

How long ago was the initial incident?

Judging by my limited experience, it sounds like you may have pulled a tendon or something of that sort.  When it hurts now and then, are you generally stressing it, or moving it in a certain way, or holding it in a certain position?  Does it tend to hurt most when the weather is changing?

Having fun with my computer in a middle of being frozen (6+ min & counting) and I would like to go to bed as it's nearly 1am my time. :( really thinking I need to take it in for a good reformat & reload.

I had to do a force shut down as it stayed frozen for about 15 minutes.

I'm full of complaints today.  I'm hungry, and I've already eaten all the food I brought to work.  Also, the day is dragging, I'm unmotivated, and I don't want to be here.
