Vague is right -- they could at least have said which scene in "Study in Pink" they were reminded of!  But that was fun.  Thanks!

So are you linking because it's your thing or are you linking because you are horrified?  Today. I was frocefully reminded why I don't hang out on the Sherlock tumblr blogs and that is because people often don't cut tag their porny illustrations - they just caption it with lines like "you're welcome everyone!" as if I've been just dying to enjoy badly rendered drawings of people having sex while I'm drinking my morning coffee.

The erotic illustrations and photo manips cross the same line for me as Real Person Fic. The images are of real people who are portraying characters of fiction. They have no say in where a persons imagination goes, but I think they should have some say if that imagination is flung like monkey poop all over the internet. A person's mother could stumble across that!

Probably I have now offended someone on this very site who lovingly renders porntacular images of Johnlock. I don't know since I have no access to the adult section:-)

More fun than actual spoilers would be, don't you think?

Does anybody know what "Friends" and "Russ" refers to?

I; along with others, were discussing  various reports about the mishandling of the Q&A by Caitin Moran at the BFI screening.  The link above takes you to a rare video of part of that public event and was posted for information.  I did not choose to look at other material on that website as it is of no interest to me; and therefore I have no idea what you are talking about.

Does anybody know what "Friends" and "Russ" refers to?

Friends was an American sit-com about 10-15 years ago, about a group of young adults living in New York City.  I believe I recall that episode, something like this -- Ross and Rachel had been dating, then she dumped him.  Sometime later, she started dating a guy named Russ who was practically a clone of Ross.  As I recall, everyone could see the resemblance except, of course, Ross, who found Russ really annoying.

Along with the video, that site had a well-thought-out editorial, pointing out that it wasn't only Cumberbatch and Freeman who were put on the spot by the aptly-named Moran -- it was also the author of that fan story, whose work was held up to public ridicule.

Not saying that Moran has to like the story -- but when a story isn't my cup of tea, while I might explain why I don't care for it, I certainly wouldn't make fun of it, especially in public.

Oh, I love "that picture" -- but it was far from being the whole story in that particular image!

As for spoilers, I personally wouldn't mind even if the entire script got leaked in advance; I know I won't fully enjoy the episodes until I'm watching them for the second and third time, anyway. But I don't expect much more will get out before Jan 1st than already has, ....

Thanks goodness I more-or-less agree with you that spoilers aren't at all the same thing as actually seeing the episode.  Several times.  Sherlock is not the kind of show where you watch the whole episode just to learn the Big Secret, and that's all there is to it.

Agreed! The only show I really stay away from spoilers for is The Walking Dead.  Mostly because, a) the plot is like BOOM BOOM BOOM when the s*** hits the fan, and you don't wanna spoil that, and B) someone dies like every week almost, and knowing ahead of time spoils the FEELS.

Most of you have probably already read this, but in case you haven't: Here are some very mild, very vague spoilers for all those who like to speculate:

http://www.digitalspy.com/british-tv/s129/sherlock/news/a538478/sherlock-series-3-13-teasers-for-the-empty-hearse.html

"One person screams. One person punches him. One person hugs him." Hm, who might they be talking about? From the trailer, it looked like Mrs Hudson was going to do the screaming - would be true to the story ("violent hysterics"). As for the punch, my money's on John (and my hopes, too). But the hug? The only person I've seen hugging Sherlock is Mrs Hudson, and she's already taken care of here, so who? Molly? Lestrade maybe? Mary? Since she didn't know him before, she might be the least intimidated by him and the most likely to "take liberties".

"Sherlock echoes a key line from Mycroft in 'A Scandal in Belgravia' at one point, turning his brother's cutting words back on him". Hm! What could that be? The first and most "cutting" line I could think of is "how would you know?" Maybe there's something Mycroft knows as little about as Sherlock does about sex? What?

From some hints one person who attended the screening has given me, my money is on either Anderson or Lestrade for the hug. But I can't confirm that, I'm just guessing based on how she hinted.

I've been going over and over that SiB thing (I may have to rewatch that ep this week when I finish season 2 of American Horror Story).  I'm thinking it could go two ways... either Sherlock throws a "fault" Mycroft used against him back up at Mycroft to use that fault (or a similar one) against Mycroft (you said I was lonely but look at you, etc)... or Sherlock throws Mycroft's hurtful words back up at him by way of "well you said this about me, and it led me to do this, don't you feel guilty now" (not that Sherlock would actually place blame or expect guilt from someone else for his own actions, but that the implication for the viewer would be there that that's what would happen. Like,"But you told me no one could love me" (I know Mycroft didn't say that, but I'm using an example), and this being the reason why Sherlock stayed away so long and assumed no one would miss him. I will be making notes of all of Mycroft's lines to Sherlock in that ep on the rewatch, lol.

So are you linking because it's your thing or are you linking because you are horrified?  Today. I'm sorry for your suffering, but I laughed so hard at this! OMG LOL. So true. People are so rude with their lack of proper tagging on that stuff.  Not that I'm particularly offended by it (though I do get your point about taking a real person's image and creating porn without their consent, I think I would be horrified if something like that of me existed on the internet for my mother to stumble onto), but when I search the tag "Sherlock" I don't expect random porn to jump out at me... but it does! Recently my parents visited, and my step-dad was sitting next to me on the couch watching tv while I mindlessly scrolled through Sherlock tags on tumblr looking for any new info.  He could visibly see my screen and I saw him look over at just the moment I scrolled across some hardcore-sex manip of Johnlock and he looked away quickly and I was just sitting there mortified like "Oh, God, what must he think I'm doing over here! I was just looking for new season three news!!!!" LOL Horrifying.

Does anybody know what "Friends" and "Russ" refers to?

Under a cut because I think my explanation could raise some spoiler flags for a certain part of the new episode...

Rachel from Friends had a long standing on again, off again relationship with Ross.  After their (I believe it was first) break up, she started dating a new guy named Russ.  Russ was super creepy in that he looked so much like Ross, had a similar profession, spoke the same way, had similar mannerisms, etc.  All the other friends were so creeped out by this, but Rachel didn't see it until one point near the end of the ep, where she was like "OMG, EWWW!!!!!" and she realized that she had subconsciously chosen another man who was basically her ex-boyfriend.

I am assuming this is justification for those of you who thought Molly's new fiance looked very similar to Sherlock. I don't know if the episode actually points this out, or if other fans who watched it just also felt that he was a lot like Sherlock.

Hmm, you may be right.  I was thinking of the actual waiter in the fancy restaurant, but I bet you're right.

10-15?? Oh, Lord, you're dating me! LOL The series finale aired at the end of my junior year in college (I remember all of my sorority sisters got together to watch it and cry buckets, because we'd all been watching it since the very beginning, when we were pre-teens). So that was 2004... I guess it's been nearly 10 years now since it ended.  I'M GETTING OLD. :(

I can't even get over how sucky that is.  I'm just imagining, like, what if one of the short stories I wrote in any one of my college creative writing classes got taken without my consent and made fun of in front of an audience, read aloud by someone I admired? That's just so wrong. I don't understand this whole thing where people like to make fun of people in fandoms. Like, just because you enjoy a show and like to create art or fanfic about it, it doesn't make you some basement dwelling freak.  I know there are probably some people out there who give the rest of fandom a bad name (that nuttymadam girl comes to mind, and if you don't know who I'm talking about.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_Qrt1k8qHo )  But for the most part, I've had very positive experiences in fandom.

This is why I like nerds to be panelists.  They don't feel the need to mock us because they know what we're about.

I had never heard of this Caitlin Moran person before this, but she's turned me off to anything she may do in the future.  And I wouldn't be surprised if she never got asked to participate in anything Sherlock related again.

ETA: And about that fanfiction... I went and found it and gave it a read (it's a four part story, the bit they read was from the last part). It was actually very well written and the porny stuff was only a very small part at the end of the story. It certainly wasn't one I would have chosen if I were the sort of person to make fun of "crazy" fanfiction. I wonder how that one came to CM's attention? I'm assuming she did a random google search and it turned up.  I wonder what her search key words were? "Sherlock" "John" "fanfiction" "naked" "thrusting" Like I said, it was a such a small part of the story, she must have been very specific.

Posted

It'd be totally different if one of the actors said, "Hey, I found this fan story that I really like, and I'm going to read a passage from it."  If that was a story I had written, I'd feel very honored.  But that wasn't at all what Moran set up -- that was like rape, compared to love-making.

I've read some of her blogs before.  As I recall, she claims to be a big Cumberbatch fan.  Well, I'm sure he'll remember her now!

Posted

Very apt analogy!

Someone pointed out (I can't remember if it was here, or on twitter) that it's really funny that people like to make fun of the Sherlock fanfiction, considering Sherlock, itself, is one giant fanfiction based on ACD's work. Only they chose to call it an "adaptation".  Tah-may-to, tah-mah-to.

I'm sure he will definitely remember (and avoid) her from now on.

I assume she thought she was being very clever. Put herself on his level and elevate herself above the rest of the fans. Like,"Hahaha, oh, Benny, aren't they silly? Let's have a laugh at their pitiful obsession!"

I really hope she got a stern talking to after that thing was over. If not by Moff and Gatiss, by someone over her head at that event.

Just wanted to say that if anyone is interested in REAL spoilers (like, for real y'all), the girl who spent yesterday giving hints and teases on her tumblr because she didn't want to outright spoil anyone has decided (her words) that people should get to choose for themselves. She is accepting questions to her ask box as long as you don't send it anon, so that she can reply in private. She doesn't want to post anything in the open and break the "don't spoil" rule from Moff and Gatiss, and she only asks that no one shares the information she gives them. Her blog is:

http://thewalkingassbutt.tumblr.com if you want to read the teases and hints

and http://thewalkingassbutt.tumblr.com/ask if you want to ask for specifics.

I'm stepping away for a minute to digest what she just sent me. *Lightheaded*

Thank you, Karie! Well, all that I could really gather from there was, that Sherlock seems to have discovered his sense of humor. (I don't think that deserves a spoiler box, does it?) Maybe he is becoming more like the old sleuth of the twinkling eyes. I'd be pleased for one, if it's well written.

So finally my expectations were lowered a bit. It does seem from all I've picked up so far, that the tone of A Scandal in Belgravia is predominant in the new series (at least the first episode). Well, all right. It's not like I didn't enjoy  that episode and after The Reichenbach Fall, it's probably good for everybody to have a few laughs. But I'm beginning to think that it would be a bad idea to watch the first series right before the third.

I'm going to take a lot of these "interpretations" with a grain of salt until I can actually set down and watch Season Three. There is so much we really don't know about the context of the teasers and trailers that are out there. Gatiss, Moffat, Cumberbatch, Freeman, and company have such a fantastic chemistry going on in that show, I'm not letting anything dampen my enthusiasm, at least, not yet.

The voice of reason once again! Only my enthusiasm needs a little dampening or I won't enjoy The Empty Hearse as much as it probably deserves.

Here's the author's response to the way her story was used.

She sympathizes with the two actors, then gives Moran a very eloquent piece of her mind, ending with this:

What gets me is that this is probably the only interaction I will ever have with those two actors. ....  I just want to sit here at home enjoying the show, buy the DVDs, pay to see their movies and share my love of it all with other fans, minding my own business. So that’s it, the one bit of contact I have with them, and it’s about humiliation and mockery.

If anyone wants to know, you're welcome to PM me. I just didn't want to break her one rule about sharing them on message boards. I think her main fear is that, on any board or tweet or tumblr dash or whatever, there is always the possibility of someone being inadvertently spoiled when they didn't want to be, and she didn't want to be responsible for that.  But I see no harm in discussing spoilers in private where no one can stumble across them. Does this forum have a private chat or multi-person PM feature?

Everything I've seen *indicates* that you are correct.  Sense of humor/more human quality. I'm looking forward to that, I think. I just hope they don't overdo it in the long run. Sherlock's special brand of jackassery is part of what makes him so lovable, in my opinion.

Very wise! Every single one of these spoilers and tidbits and hints or whatever are colored by the person who viewed it first hand. Everyone is different and has a different perspective. I've seen a lot of people on tumblr like "Oh, that sounds awful, I hate it, I don't want to watch now!" But I'm like, guys, it's someone else's interpretation of what they saw. It might look totally different to you when you watch it, why don't you just wait and see before you give up?

Honestly, the spoilers have just made me more excited. Did I get some information that I was a little unhappy/unsure about? Yes. But that could very well change when I see it play out for myself. I'm looking forward to it. Being told "This and that happens and so and so does this with xyz" is one thing, but actually seeing it play out and getting to pick apart all the nuances is something entirely different! :)

Just click on the "envelope" icon at the top of any forum page to be taken to your Personal Messenger.  You can message any forum member or members, up to a total of 7 people (counting yourself).  When you receive new messages, a red new-message count will be superimposed on the envelope.

I would just ask that you pass along your informant's complete and exact quote, and that you ask your recipients to do likewise.  Otherwise, when A shares the information with B, who shares it with C, and so on, with each of them paraphrasing the preceding version -- this could end up like a party game that I've heard variously called "Whisper," "Gossip," or "Telephone."  Thanks!

How true!  I was actually there when they filmed a few scenes (admittedly nothing earthshaking!), and I have absolutely no idea what they mean or how they fit into the episodes.  So I like to think of the spoilers and tidbits as something like a teaser trailer.

Is that right? Wow! Good for her. I haven't even seen her yet and already I'm liking this lady more and more (I hear that her portrayal of Mary is fantastic and the character is great, by the way).

I hope Benedict and Martin get to read the author's words to them. And I really, really hope that CM gets to read what she had to say to her.  Though, someone like that, it probably wouldn't faze her. She'd roll her eyes and mock the "crazy, obsessed" fan for "being hysterical over a little joke".

CM's next piece in 'The Times'  is due out on the 21st; so it will be interesting to see whether she addresses the Sherlock screening and her role in the Q&A. Having apologised to Cumberbatch and co at the end of the reading and again at the end of the Q&A it would be somewhat disingenuous not to afford the same courtesy to the author.

Saying that I wonder if she has even apologised to the director for her continual mocking of a filming error. Or indeed to Amanda for mentioning her marraige to Martin a number of times (they are not married) and trying to tie that in with getting the role and any domestic arguments they may have on set.

The shame is that CM has championed Cumberbatch throughout his early career and championed Sherlock from the very first episode.

The BFI announced before the Q&A that it would be available to view on the BFI Player after the first episode airs. It will be interesting to see how heavily the piece is edited, or whether we get the full version.

On a brighter note; only seven days til 'Many Happy Returns' airs!
