I'm really excited for Many Happy Returns! I'm wondering, however, if Sherlock and/or John will feature in it, or if it will center mainly around secondary characters.

Well, we'll find out soon enough.

I've been wondering why this silly "make them read slash fan fiction" story bothers me so much. One of the many reasons is that I perceive it as homophobic. The impact I am sure would have been different if the story had been about a male and a female character. But just imagining two men having sex is somehow perceived as particularly giggle- and cringe-worthy. I'm not fond of pairing Sherlock off with anybody, but I don't see why a male partner would be so much more sensational than a female one.

Ugh, so the very sweet young lady who was sharing spoilers privately on tumblr? Apparently someone went and leaked them all over tumblr and tagged them everything EXCEPT "spoilers", and they are trying to get them taken down quickly before too many people get spoiled against their wishes.

Why do people have to be so ridiculously rude and stupid?

She's understandably upset by this, as this was the one thing she did not want to happen, and so I don't know if she will be answering anymore questions now.  Way to ruin it for everyone, jerk!

If you want to remain unspoiled, beware.  May be best to stay away from tumblr for a few days and then hopefully they can get this under control.

OK, wtf? I just checked out the blog that leaked the spoilers, and it's not a case of someone just being a tool like "Yay, spoilers everyone!" It's intentional maliciousness.  They just posted this (no spoilers included in what I'm about to c/p):

"Where did you get this information?"

Some guy gave us the the spoilers because we asked politely on an alt account.

Yes, we have alt accounts- and if anyone pulls even remote shit over us- we have powerful spoilers that I have withheld (from sources outside thewalkingassbutt)

We have power and we are unstoppable. Its best not to cross us directly. I have alt blogs following every single account that has previously sent us ‘hate’ or any kind of message against FYF.

The only ones who are spared from this are Frenchcan and Frick-Ghosts.

you can’t hide from spoilers with these alts; unlike most, we are not afraid to send on-blog messages containing major spoilers on alt accounts. “Anon disable” option won’t hinder us.

My Advice: Sit comfortably kids.

I can not even get over how horrible some people are.

CM's next piece in 'The Times'  is due out on the 21st; so it will be interesting to see whether she addresses the Sherlock screening and her role in the Q&A. Having apologised to Cumberbatch and co at the end of the reading and again at the end of the Q&A it would be somewhat disingenuous not to afford the same courtesy to the author.

Saying that I wonder if she has even apologised to the director for her continual mocking of a filming error. Or indeed to Amanda for mentioning her marraige to Martin a number of times (they are not married) and trying to tie that in with getting the role and any domestic arguments they may have on set.

Thanks for that additional info.  This is the first I've heard about Moran apologizing to anybody -- one point in her favor.  Next, maybe she can learn the meaning of the word "inappropriate."

We may finally learn the answer to the question, what was being filmed on North Gower Street on the 6th?

Apparently there's something to be said for dial-up internet service, after all -- Tumblr is so image-intensive that I virtually never go there, because it takes for-blinking-ever to download.

This sounds to me like the same general syndrome as what Moran did -- "Look how important I am!"

I hope Mildred-bobbin continues to write, I know first hand how hurtful and harmful it is for someone to read something very private and personal and then give it to others to read who were never meant to see it.  It's no fun and it took me years to get over it. I hope she is able to get on with it and enjoy those words in her head.

As its on the red button and therefore won't be widely viewed I'm assuming neither John or Sherlock are in it. (Unless some of the 'fake footage'  was for this episode?)

The weekly red button schedule  gets published on a saturday so hopefully we will have more details soon as promised.

Not sure of its distribution either; usually the red button material is only broadcast in the UK and Eire. Maybe they will put it up on the BBCs youtube channel for wider distribution?

A new image on the BBC Sherlock page  for us to ponder over.

Which one do you mean?

Now even BBC One is asking them to stop ruining things for everybody else.

However, official recognition often seems to be exactly the "reward" that vandals are seeking.

Oh, yeah, they're loving it.  Thinking that they're so awesome and cool. Ugh. Some people just need a good, swift kick in the pants face.

Here's the latest (or at least, here's everything in one place) regarding "Many Happy Returns" (from RadioTimes) --

"Sherlock Holmes has been gone for two years. But someone isn't quite convinced that he's dead…"

So runs the brief but intriguing synopsis for Many Happy Returns, a mini episode of Sherlock set to become available via the BBC's interactive Red Button service from Christmas Day.

No cast details have been revealed for the short prequel episode so we don't know whether Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, or his friend John, Martin Freeman, will appear but it sounds as if there are some die hard fans of the detective out there who aren't ready to give up on him even after all this time...

Many Happy Returns will be available to watch at various intervals between 25 of December and New Year's Day, when Sherlock series three proper begins.

Some more goodies from the BBC  today. Wriiten interviews with BC and MF,  and video interview with Gatiiss and Moffat on the BBC website. Followed tonight by interview with Martin and Amanda on BBC1 at 7:00 pm.

Here are links to the interviews:

I'm especially exited about the hints they gave on Charles Augustus Milverton's reincarnation as Magnussen. While Moriarty never mattered much to me in the books (he seemed unrealistic as hell and I hated him for killing Holmes, anyway), Milverton has, for me, always been the Holmes villain. His case is special and different from the others in a lot of ways, the most notable being that it isn't Holmes who beats him. He is the only logical, in-canon step up from Moriarty and I am so glad they're taking him on.

Posted

I'm curious about him too ... didn't the BBC announce that he was "the one man Sherlock truly hates" or something? So what the [censored] did he do to hold that rank instead of Moriarty?

Posted

He's a blackmailer so he could have something on the whole Holmes Clan?  Maybe that is where the back story comes in about who did what to "upset Mummy"? That Cumberbatch and Gatiss talked at a round table that made Cumberbatch clam up?

Posted

We'll find out...

I think Sherlock didn't necessarily hate Moriarty. Moriarty was like a mirror image of Sherlock himself, minus the heart. I think he was able to empathize with him and that scared Sherlock, because it showed him his own potential for evil and insanity. Weren't there some readers who interpreted the original Moriarty as a figment of Holmes' mind altogether?

Milverton only appears in one (memorable!) story. As usual, Watson had never heard of him before (because Doyle only just made him up, I suspect) and when Holmes explains to him who Milverton is, he basically characterizes him by the violent aversion he calls forward in himself. The reader never quite finds out why and I'm not sure Doyle had any deeper thoughts on the matter.

My impression was that, like all villains, Milverton brings out a lot of good in Holmes, or brings it to light, rather. I think in the story, it's just Milverton's sickening manipulative, cold-hearted, avaricious, dishonest, slimy, sadistic nature that grates on Holmes and calls his hatred forward.

Very true, but Moriarty, in the BBC Sherlock, did make it very personal for Sherlock not only by killing an helpless old blind woman and eleven or twelve more innocent people, but Moriarty used Watson as a target as well as Lestrade and Mrs. Hudson at the end forcing Sherlock to fake his death and leave London.

So if the "TGG" makes the Holmes/Moriarty connection far more personal, perhaps they have done the same with Charles Augustus as well.

I assume that whenever the Freeman-Abbington interview is available, there will be a link to it in the sidebar of the other three.

"Sherlock versus real life" - if that is really the main theme of the next series, I am going to love it.

The Freeman/Abbington piece is not an interview as such. More that they are guests throughout the show and can comment on the various issues within the show. So not sure we will get  a full recording of what they said; except maybe snippets.

First segment was on how they met; second on Sherlock, although they gave nothing away that we don't already know; third on Abbingtons role in Mr Selfridge.

They do spark off each other well. On how they met-Freeman ' I walked onto the make-up bus and spotted this very lovely woman.' Abbington 'and then he spotted me behind her'.
