Don't know where it came from bu I'd be happy to email the seller for more story behind it.

If it's made of resin, I kind of doubt that it's unique..

Isn't resin product has to be cast from a mould?

At least that what I know. So they can easily be mass-produced.

I know some really good wood carvers... hmmm.. hmm... maybe one day, I ask them to carve me some Sherlock?

The problem is, I don't remember where their workshop is, and no number to contact so I need to ask around first.

Could resin be hand-carved?  I'm too sleepy to follow up on that tonight.

Van Buren's right, resin is normally cast in a mold. I imagine you could sand it down afterwards, and this website says you can carve it if you heat it; but I doubt it would be the same as carving, say, wood, since the resin would be a) semi-solid and b) cooling very quickly to a solid as you "carved." It's possible for the result to be one of a kind -- you would simply destroy the mold after one cast -- but normally it would be a limited reproduction item. Resin's not considered to be a very "high end" art medium. Notice it's painted to look like it's some sort of metal; that's because the resin by itself looks "cheap".

The bust is a little different from the bust in these (though bigger) but not much. I wonder could it be a 3-D printed copy of a smaller one? It's very weird that they don't name the artist, at that price I would want to know, and see examples of other work by the same person.

If it were a copy of the smaller bust, I'd expect it to be precisely the same except for size -- but you're right, it's not.  For one thing, the curls on his forehead are different.

It's pretty large, by the way -- 34 cm is a little over 13 inches tall.  The one in the Gift Set looks to be a bit taller than the DVD box, so it's maybe 8 or 9 inches.

I don't own a 3D printer, but I do think they are super cool. I'm pretty sure there is 3D design software available, where you can quite easily make little changes (if it were to avoid copyright, or whatever). Though if it is copied, it could be from any source. The only thing that really made me suspect a 3D print was that the material was resin, which is associated more with 3D prints than with hand-carving. Same with casting, resin would fit there too, its just much more associated (in my mind) with multiples, rather than one-off pieces.

Maybe this was a prop from a fan event or something?

ETA: Just a thought, but if it is artist-made, it could have been one of a series of practice models for other busts which were later mass-produced. You might start big and then later shrink it to preserve detail. In which case it may well be worth the price. The BBC collection (still the only example I know of of that sort of bust) probably had a well established artist make their design and any associated originals would likely have a real value.

Interested if anyone gets the real story of the mysterious Sherlock bust.

I don't know about 3d printer using resin?

3D printer normally use plastic filament. It looks like a thread, here:

154htmq.jpg,

The end product is also plastic. The filament is being heat up in the process to follow the shape.

Sample of product:

6pyps6.jpg

They print the shape layer by layer and you can adjust the fine-ness and solidity (for example, to save filament and make it lightweight, you can make it porous inside, they build some kind of framework to support the shape.

There are various models available for download (there is actually a similar style printable Beethoven statue for download), you can also create your own using software like 3dmax.

You can also download 3dmax file for certain object (maybe they have Sherlock!?), do some clean up and convert it into printable file.

You can print it to whatever scale you want.

Nowadays they have 3d scan as well, where they can scan object or even catch Benedict Cumberbatch and convert him to file and print it out.

If plastic is not desirable, from the 3d print out (or from statue that is already in the market) they can make mold (and touch-up the shape like adding details or reducing the bust etc) and then use various material to cast the statue, resin (as Arcadia said, not high end looking though), or copper etc with better looking.

Anyway, anyway! Surprise, surprise. Expect next year but I receive the figurine today.

For some reason in my head I always thought it's 1/5 scale (that would be scary), it's actually tiny 5" tall but I love it.

The coat is made from vinyl, it's 'flappable' but not detachable. Although Sherlock looks serious, it's better than I thought it would be. However, one of the figurine's hairline misses the color (edge of hair has skin tone instead of hair color), other than that, I am happy with it. He will accompany me at work.

Oh! He is wearing purple shirt. :)

Your Sherlock figure is so cool Van Buren! I would love to have a small collection of stuff from the show but not sure I have a good space to display them (my  place is tiny).

About 3D printing with resin, there is special resin available that seems to be growing in popularity as opposed to the filament. Resin would give better detail- for example on things like the weave of Sherlock's coat.

Of all the Sherlock merchandise I've seen, this is the one I'm the most tempted to get for myself. And I'd like to have a whole set of them too, including the ladies. I could make a little 221B for them on my bookshelf ....

Yoiks, maybe not! $32.00 from Amazon! No way I'm spending that for an action figure .... is that what others of you have paid? Seems to me like it should have been around $20.

Ha, there's one for $22 on eBay, that's more like it.

ETA -- Double ha. $20 and free shipping from Toys R Us. Done.

Nice! Technology is amazing.

Good idea. That should go into long list of things I wish to do.

If only my wish of 30 hours a day (with same amount of hour for work) comes true.

They should make John, soon!

Yes, it should cost around 12.99 pounds, with conversion maybe 19-20 USD.

Again, I screwed up thinking it was Euro.

I've always thought 30 hours in a day would be just about right. (Maybe I need to move to a different planet?)

And yes, John should definitely be next -- and soon!

I'm packing my bag.

We could have our own forum!  (Who cares if we're discussing something that actually happened years ago?  It'd be new to us.)

I thought we would have our own BC too. All news, stories are read by him for us. He is available for playing board games as well.

And gravity in that planet is like on the moon. We could run around in giant steps, there is a youth fountain and we could be as young and healthy as we want.

If that's not enough, there are free inter-galaxy wifi. Password:umqra

Hurry up guys!

What is the clock thingy on the scarf? Is it
