Here's another interesting thing...

Why do some people say 'Geez'?

I say 'Jeez', as I always assumed it's a contraction of 'Jesus'.

Have I misunderstood that?

No idea, never said Geez or Jeez, could be either I suppose.

Another weird, possibly impossible expression

I think I use both? But mostly geez, because that's how it's commonly written in assorted children's books and comics. I've always thought of it as a contraction for "gee whiz", although I realize it's really just a diminution of Jesus.

And this discussion is what the hiatus has reduced us to.... a12sreq.gif

All of the above are almost certainly a way to say "Jesus" without technically swearing. The spelling may be altered for the same reason. For example, I've never seen "gee" spelt any other way.

Added: "Jeezo" is probably just an arbitrary extension of "gee" or "geez," like "gee whillikers."

Maybe you're thinking of Cheez Whiz. Which is a play on gee whiz, but is also now used as another version of gee whiz!

I also use "sheez" a lot, which is geez with a little sh*t added. :D

Actually, now that you mention it, so do I. But it means exactly the same thing as all the other versions. I think. The difference is in tone ... I think I use "Jesus" when I'm genuinely perturbed, "geez" and its variants when I'm more startled or annoyed, and "sheesh" when I'm mildly amused. Isn't language fun? :D

Absolutely love it.

Plus, although I hate our spelling and some of the irrational grammar...I have such pride in the English language.

You should try Dutch spelling, it's so complicated and annoying

... I just swear. Though I only use the really strong stuff when I'm genuinely peed off.

But much Dutch and German is similar to English...

I disagree

Well on the Dutch you certainly know better than me...I don't know any.  Though my son speaks a little Dutch.

I did 'O' level German, so know a little more...

Why does your son speak Dutch?

Posted

Just from a Summer camp years ago.  Most of his fellow workers were Dutch. He has also at least been to the Netherlands, which is more than I have.

He is fluent in French and German and knows some Italian.

To me, geez is just an expression, I don't even think of it as far as relating it to Jesus. :( It's actually works the same to me as saying 'gosh' 'aiz' 'dang' or 'doh!'

Well, apart from origin of those that I don't know, I actually don't know much about popular fairy tales as well.

I know Hans Christian Andersen, Enid Blyton and those were the children book I grew up with, they mostly teach good things. All other children books I read were the same.

Maybe about a decade ago, I went to a cozy corner in library to kill some time because I was waiting for someone, settling on children section because I finally curious of finding out about those two Hensel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood.

And good god, :blanket: :blanket: I was horrified and remembered cursing quietly in the corner. You mean kids read thissssss? Are we supposed to learn how to cook a witch and slash open a wolf?

I am aware that there are different versions, but as far as I know, that sadistic version exists for children book, and those two are mostly referred as classic lovable nostalgic fairy tales. Really....

P.S and why on earth that idiot wolf didn't just eat the girl on the spot when he first saw her? :p

You know the old joke?

Grimm by name, grim by nature?!

Original fairy tales are horrific...

Then again(awaits for thrown stones)  look at the religious texts that were the main literature for people at the time?!

The Little Mermaid is pretty horrific, and that's Hans Christian Anderson.

Don't forget Cinderella! The stepsisters cut their feet!

I haven't actually read or watched Little Mermaid, the HCA I read are those shorter stories, like the naked king and is it by him, the one with the crying statue? Gah.. I'm not sure it's him anymore.

And Cinderella! I actually read that not long ago, that the step sisters cut their feet, although that is not the version I watched, Disney animated movie. From the same source I also read that Sleeping Beauty is actually raped by the prince? Gah!

The story about the naked king is called The emperor's new clothes and is written by HCA, I don't recall a story with a crying statue though.
