Okay, you gals are not very encouraging ... I've been thinking of hiring someone to clean my mom's house, but it sounds like I'm not going to be very happy with the results. Agggh! I really can't keep up the standard of cleanliness I want by myself anymore, but if I'm just going to be redoing what someone else has done ....

I hate this situation.

I am doing again, too.

My standards aren't that high, but it's a pretty big house. Too big, but moving Mom out of it at this point in her life would be too much for her. And the yard's a complete loss by now. Don't know how we'll ever sell the place. :( Oh well, just keep doing the best I can.....

Does anyone else feel really cheesy when they give someone a business card?

:-D No, cause I don't have any. Sounds pretty cool to me actually.

I cringe even when I have a good legit reason to do it. Gave one to the lady in the post office earlier, who was interested in knowing more about the business, and then cringed for the entire walk back to the office.

But why? What's so cringeworthy about that?

Thank goodness Mom's house is small (and my brother, who lives next door, takes care of both yards).  Her place is very lucky if I eventually get around to picking up a scrap of paper (rather than walking over it).  Fortunately her paid caregivers (who come two days per week) seem to find the time to sweep and mop now and then.

Why don't you ask around and see if anyone can recommend a good service?  Or failing that, make a list of things you do and do not want done, and see if any of the local agencies are willing to oblige?  I gave up after that one agency, whereas a bit of persistence might have paid off.  Or actually -- if cleaning services are anything like home-care givers, you might be far better off contacting an individual who does cleaning and/or yard work.  That way, you'll know that your wishes are known to the person who will actually be doing the work.  And you can probably get a good sense of how responsive the person is just by meeting them.  Yeah, that's what I'd do.

I don't know. I think I partly feel like a fraud, though I have no idea why, and it makes me think of those TV shows where you have some smarmy, smart arse sales guy oozing sleaze all over people and they always seem to be giving out business cards.

I've been contemplating it but The Mom is so dead set against it that I haven't, just to keep peace. She can't bear to see money spent. And I'm inching closer to hiring companions for her; may not be any money left over for the yard after that. :( Although then I'd have a little more time.... I'll work it all out somehow, but the place will never be what it was when my parents were younger. I don't have the time or the interest in keeping it "perfect."

I'm okay if someone asks me for a card (although half the time I don't have any on me ) but yeah, to act like a salesperson is really uncomfortable for me. I've gotten better at it though, like most social interactions. Just repeated practice, I think, and a little more self-confidence as I become elderly.

Arcadia, I agree, if your Mom needs someone there with her while you're at work, that's far more important than keeping the house spotless.

Re: business cards: I have no issue giving them out, but I only do it when they show interest in my business (makes not to self that I need to update my site)

I have business card because My office is new and I didn't still go my office. I need to introduce it.

There's no other way. It's forbidden advertisement in my job.

Just watching a documentary about Kennedy on TV and a small detail called my attention. Could it be that Dr.Feelgood https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Jacobsonis the protagonist of Comfortably Numb?

I always thought it was about a junkie and his dealer.

OK, I remember now, you wanted to open your own business. So you have a whole new career -- that's even better than a new job. Congratulations! :applause:

I'd love to go to Greece, I'm always lusting after photos of Santorini. I'd be scared to go anywhere at the moment though, too many attacks. I suppose as long as you don't go somewhere too crowded you're probably (hopefully) safe.

When my parents were hauling me all over the damn planet affording me the opportunity to see the world, Greece was my favorite stop on the trip. Loved all the ruins and such, much better than being dragged around stuffy old treated to world-class museums. It was also the scene of my greatest humiliation, though, as the tour guide yelled at me for climbing on top of a stupid rock an architectural treasure. No wonder I hate travel feel so privileged. :d

Ha! Climbing over treasures, how very dare you! I enjoy travel and seeing new places, but I almost find it utterly exhausting. Pretty much every time I've been on holiday with a group of people there's come a point where I've just begged off for a day and stayed in the hotel room on my own to recover. That's likely an introvert trait, needing to just be alone to recharge my batteries for a bit before getting back up and at 'em. When I was young my parents were more about beach holidays, France mainly, and touring in our camper van. I used to lie under a couple of towels and read my way through a library of books - the idea of a beach holiday bores the life out of me now (and knowing how much I read I suspect it did then too). I like to see ruins, old parts of cities, fantastic landscapes. There are loads of places I would love to go, but will likely never get to. Don't have the time, money or the company. :(

I'm pretty lucky where I live now though, landscape wise. Today I spent the day hiking along the cliff tops between beaches, and the scenery was stunning. And then after a meal in a restaurant I got to come home, to my own bed and creature comforts, and fall into a food coma.

Yep, hiking's the thing for me too. Although I've done a lot this summer and my *&^%$# foot has broken down as a result. Again. *sigh*

You'll have to get it replaced with a hoof.

And then I'd probably get a stone lodged in it. :(

True, you'd have to carry a stick around to prise out stones. But at least then you'll be able to do this.
