But it's hardly effective if it doesn't mean anything to anyone.

Oh dear, looks like I'm destined to be an idiot today. Wondering why the printer is refusing to print the morning's orders... realising I don't have it connected.

So you are the one who make those IT ask that annoying 'duh' first question, "Have you plugged it in?"

Luckily I wasn't quite stupid enough to ring IT.

If it's remote assistance you could answer "Hell yes!" then quickly plugged it in and admit to the possible next solution that sounds more complicated. :P

The next question is "Is it turned on?" :P

I do that all the time, Pseud, but I have a perfectly good reason for it, which is, uh … hm. Never mind.

My excuse is that it was horribly early so I wasn't fully awake yet. ;)

I worked in phone and TV tech support for a few years, and the amount of people I wished I could reach through the phone and throttle.

"Can you send out a technician?"

"No, I can't send a technician just to switch the plug on for you."

Hey, was that Kitty Riley? (Katherine Parkinson.) Guess we know what she did after her newspaper job fizzled.

Yep, she's the boss of the IT department and knows NOTHING about computers.

I'm trying to think of a word that means overworked and struggling, to be used in relation to infrastructure rather than personal issues... and I can't put my finger on the word I'm looking for, my brain won't cooperate. I've tried hunting through the thesaurus and looking on the tip of my tongue site but it's not jogging my mind. Anyone have any ideas?

Hmmm...

’Strained’, perhaps?

That's not it. Usually if I can't think of a word it comes to me a few hours later but this one is being particularly stubborn.

Sounds like 'burned out' to me.

I don't think I'm quite understanding  what you're  getting at.  Maybe we could be more helpful if you filled us in just a bit more?  Can you give a brief example (not necessarily the one you're actually working on), so we can put ourselves in the situation?

Would tax, toil, or slave be close?

Something along the lines of: the increasingly overstretched infrastructure of South Wales resulting in heavy congestion

Ah, no wonder -- I thought you were talking about an actual person -- but you're anthropomorphizing the local highways.  I see now that's what you said in the first place, but that was the part I didn't understand.  Thanks.

"... overworked and struggling" -- will ponder.

Overburdened?  Overtaxed?  Stressed?  Pressured/Pressed?  Encumbered?  Exploited?

I feel like I know exactly what word you're talking about, but I can't think of it either.

Nope. Ah well, I don't suppose the exact word matters, it still gets the point across.

Heh, our online library help desk is weird, in office hours it's staffed by UK uni librarians, but in the late evening and overnight it's handed over to US librarians.

Makes sense I guess, time zones and everything.
