I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be seeing Bendy, but he looks sad in the eyes, er eye, on the freak side of that photo.

Just found this:

Nice, huh? I think it's from the unaired pilot. Sherlock looks so young...

And this is from the pilot as well. Gosh, he was set up to be a heartthrob!

See, I still like him as he looks now rather than the unaired pilot.

I need to re-watch the unaired pilot (must wait for DVD's to arrive) to compare the Sherlock hairstyle.  I did like the hairstyle he had when they filmed the behind the scenes of the initial read through for the 90 minute version of the episode.

Oh, me too. Big improvement. The pilot version didn't look like Sherlock Holmes at all. But just as a cute guy, well... You could do worse, couldn't you?

I mean, take this shot for example:

I know he's probably still older than I am now in that, but somehow, pilot Sherlock makes me feel all motherly.

He was 32 or 33 when it was filmed and looks closer to 25.  And it definitely could have been worse.  I think he looks good either way but am used to the current Sherlock look over the pilot.

If you're talking about the one where Martin Freeman is wearing a knit shirt with wide stripes, I think that's basically Freeman's audition for the role.  At least that's what I've always thought they were implying that it was.  In which case that would've been before the pilot.

I love the contrast there between Cumberbatch's reading of Sherlock's lines by himself (which is fine, but doesn't quite sound like our Sherlock) and his reading with Freeman -- instant magic!  I also find it interesting that the lines in the solo reading do not actually appear in the pilot (though they were used in the 90-minute SiP), which I take to mean that they were in the pilot script but got cut.

The way it looked there were more people in the room than normal for an audition and it had the same set up as other times when they have shown a behind the scenes of the initial script read through before filming an episode.  And they would cut to the filmed 90 min version. But either way it was good.

I'll need to pay more attention to who else is there, next time I watch it.  If there are any of the other actors present, then it's clearly a regular table read (for either the pilot or the first episode).  I've heard a number of people say they were at Freeman's audition, though -- so if all we see are producers and such, then I'd still lean in that direction.

Here are samples of those two readings from YouTube.  (The DVD versions may be longer, I'm not sure.)

Unfortunately it's a pretty tight shot of just Cumberbatch alone and Cumberbatch with Freeman.  Does anyone recognize any of the people in the background?

Don't recognize the people in the background but have seen similar in other read through footage.  With plates of food on the table, I'm more likely to suspect read through than audition.

Yeah, good point.  They show that footage on the DVD while talking about the auditions, so I just had the impression that's what they were showing.  Too bad it isn't a wider shot, so we could see if there are other actors at the table -- that would really clinch it.

Possible clue (?) -- Would BC's hair be longish and dark already if it were MF's audition?

Depends on what he had been working on.  His hair changes more often than mine does. :)

My best guess at this point is that it's a table read for the pilot -- so just a bit pre-pilot -- far enough back to make it noteworthy.  But if this is the table read, I would dearly love to see Freeman's audition!

I saw that pic yesterday online and noticed how they both had their left hand up by their face even if the position wasn't exactly the same.

Thank you Bendy. That explains a lot (& why I can break into a southern drawl randomly when around people from down there).
