One time when I was at a party, someone had left a paper grocery bag lying on its side on the floor.  The hostess's cat walked into the room, and all the cat lovers immediately went, "Aww, she gonna go into the bag."  And of course she did.  Which greatly puzzled the non-catlovers, who asked us, "How'd you know she was gonna do that?"

That's what cats DO!  :D

Just came across another Simon's Cat while watching YouTube, and couldn't resist:

Love those little noises!

I love Simon's Cat.

The thing is, after going through all that in the above video, MY cats would then take one sniff of the food and stalk off. Sigh.

Babysitting my friends' dog until Saturday.  She's a sweet girl but she's 13 now and not happy with extreme cold and super wetness ... so guess what ?  On Sunday through Monday the windchill was -26 C !  We're expecting our 10,000th Nor'Easter of this illustrious climatically challenged year and they're calling for "torrential" rain over the next three days ( three days !!)  .  My friends are in Nassau.  I think I'll train the dog to bite them when they get back !  ;)

 Oh dear. Poor dog.

I had an encounter with one of these this morning:

It scolded and threw stuff at me. They do that a lot. Those cute looks are deceptive...

I went out to the garage to get something, and as I walked by Alex's car, it chattered at me.  This was a bit unusual, so I told Alex and we came back out to have a look.  Turns out there was a squirrel in the engine compartment.  It left when we opened the hood (after giving us a dirty look) -- but it was back next morning, and Alex had to shoo it out before he could go to work.

I've had to tap the good of my previous car more than once to get the birds out. I fried one once not realizing it was on the top of the engine block (I was wondering why I was smelling toast & thought it was Panera waifing up from down the street until I smelled it again by my parents' in the middle of nowhere, then checked under the hood once at their place.)

Squirrels used to store acorns on top of the carburetor in my old Mustang, and one made a nest in the glove compartment. Lord knows how many miles I drove that rascal around without realizing... I never had a squirrel throw anything at me, though!

Yeah, with a garage, you only get mice in your ventilation system.

Voice of experience there!

One of my neighbors is plagued by squirrels in the roof-y part over his porch. I see his kids trapping squirrels in laundry baskets and chasing them away from the house a lot. But I haven't seen the squirrels fight back... yet!

I know I mentioned this a few weeks back.  Here is the video for the song I call "The Rogue Squirrel Song" better known as Foreverandever Etc.

You all must live in more open spaces than I do.  Of course, our neighbourhood backs onto the grounds of the largest oil refinery in Canada, so maybe the creatures stay away to protest the diminishing of their habitat by the exploiters of fossil fuels.  Or maybe they just hate the smell ! ;)

I live near a graveyard, and it's the most alive place ever: Birds, hedgehogs, squirrels, mice, voles... you name it.

Squirrels can be quite violent in my experience. I once witnessed a pair of squirrels having a domestic. I swear I am not making this up. One partner was on the ground and the other in the nest in the tree, and they were definitely the squirrel language equivalent of yelling at each other, while the one in the nest threw debris on the head of the one on the ground. It was very funny to watch. Just like a human couple.

Well, I notice yours is a red squirrel, and I've always heard that redheads are somewhat more, erm, volatile? than the general population. Our drab little gray squirrels just chatter and shake their tails at you.

Yeah, gray squirrels seem to like to keep a little distance between themselves and the people they're chastising.  Red squirrels are  like small people ... they're more feisty !  :D   I'm a fairly large person myself ... I'm not being disrespectful or channeling Randy Newman's "Short People" ... Honest !!

Gawd ... now I keep hearing ol' Randy in my head ...

Yup, we only have the red kind over here. Too bad, actually - I like the grey ones a lot, too. But they can be pretty, um, energetic as well. I remember one time we visited New York and took a photo of a grey squirrel in the park. The little thing then hopped right up to us, and in pretty unequivocal terms demanded to be compensated with food! We didn't have anything suitable, though, and besides I wasn't sure whether feeding them wasn't maybe forbidden or what they can and cannot eat, so it didn't get anything, and I can tell you, it didn't like that one bit and made sure to let us know what it thought of us...

Yup... and unfortunately, I find angry squirrels really cute. The poor thing. It was outraged - "they took my picture without permission and now they even refuse to pay me!" - and I couldn't stop laughing and taking more pictures of it.

Even cuter, though, are these little fellows, in my opinion:

I think it's such a pity that we don't have them where I live. I can watch chipmunks for hours. They always remind me of the terrible day when I was a child and we ran over one of them with our car. I think this has been more of an incentive for me to become a careful driver than any security concerns...

I love chipmunks too -- they are just adorable.  I once injured one with my car too, and still feel horrible about it, though I had no way of knowing it was there.  So yeah, I'm more careful now.

To be specific, the chipmunk was apparently sitting on top of one of the tires while my car was parked.  I was in a hurry to leave, so I started the car quickly and immediately threw it into gear.  Since then, I've made a point of honking the horn and waiting a few seconds before I even turn the key.  This also protects cats (and squirrels) who like to sit on top of the engine.

When I was at a women's retreat several years ago, there was a chipmunk in the chapel playing with a red cinnamon candy ball.
