Sherlock Holmes, porn preference: normal

A good question....I mean...what's normal for porn?  None kinky? He only accesses it so many times a day, a week, or a month?  Or, as some one suggested in one of the threads, that it was really John who was using Sherlock's computer to do his porn surfing. Or maybe Mrs. Hudson?

I hoped kind of the opposite!

In that Sherlock had been picked up using John's computer, which of course had naked ladies on it!

I guess there isn't really anything wrong with Sherlock looking at porn...I just do't like the thought of it.

I mean really, have people no imagination?!

Oh, so you think Sherlock's only viewed porn for professional reasons?

I can live with that!

Sounds reasonable, I can't see Sherlock doing porn either and let's face it. For all of Magnussen's intellect, he didn't get everything right, his massive ego got in the way of a lot of things. Maybe he was just projecting.

The obvious, of course. He did miss things. And he believed that no one in the world would ever dare go against him. He believed himself totally above the law and untouchable. He never expected that there would be people like Lady Smallwood, Sherlock Holmes, and Mary Morstan who would dare stand up to him. In his mind he owned everything and everyone he touched.

Sherlock is an ordinary human being with massive intellect. He wants to be the high functioning sociopath he portrays himself as to other people. His desires are human but having sex or watching porn in no way can increase his intellectual powers so he would restrict those things. Morphine, cocaine and Tobacco do help the brain to think. That's why he is not associated with Marijuana or Alcoholic beverages. Watching porn for pleasure is untidy for Sherlock. I doubt whether he engages himself in sexual activity or not. Yes, he did it with Jenine but other than that I don't think he frequents. In my opinion he never watches porn but, may engage in sexual activity depending on the situation.

If you are not convinced by my logic consider this -  He already has stored his greatest desires in his mind palace. So if he closes his eyes he'll have something better than some internet pornography.

And even though they did see each other naked and apparently engaged in some flirtation. Janine's little "whoop" in the bathroom, in the hospital she says something like "Just once would have been nice." Sherlock replies:"I was waiting until we were married."

So it seems that their "relationship" wasn't consummated in that way.

I think this is one of the funniest things the writers ever threw in to the mix. What does it even mean?

It means somebody was trying to be funny, I guess.

No, lazy answer, sorry. Well, "in universe", I suppose it means that Magnussen somehow gained knowledge about what kind of pornography Sherlock looks at and that it was, by Magnussen's standards, "normal". From what I have seen of Charles Augustus Magnussen, "normal" porn in his eyes could be anything. My best guess is that when he writes that in his files, he means the person in question does not have any tastes so unusual that he could use them as "pressure points".

Remember when, in "A Scandal in Belgravia", Sherlock said: "If I wanted to look at naked women, I'd borrow John's laptop"? And John said he did borrow it? From that one could conclude that Sherlock did want to see pictures of naked women. And I bet he's been on Irene's website. He might have told himself that the reasons were entirely professional, but I have my doubts...

Oh no, of course not. That would be boring. I must say, Sherlock's very private life is something I prefer not to know too much about, anyway...

Hmm, still not happy about my boy using smut...

But the show's about him and not me!

I have a very hard time imagining a man who has no interest in pornography whatsoever and I must say, I see absolutely nothing wrong with that as long as it doesn't involve a liking for things I think even Magnussen would not classify as "normal". And Sherlock is a man, despite all his efforts to be nothing but a brain on legs.

I don't care one bit what Sherlock does with his or John's computer while I'm not looking (yeah, nothing, I know, because he doesn't really exist, but if he did, I wouldn't care one bit. You know what I mean. I hope.)

Oh yes, I know exactly what you mean and I am fully aware the problem is me and not Sherlock!

So you are arguing that porn is not normal at all, let alone that there is a normal preference for it?  But I agree with the rest, I don't think he'd be doing that much. I think Magnussen got it wrong. Could be John borrowed Sherlock's laptop and flooded it with cheesy badly produced porn as revenge for Sherlock always using his laptop. Someone should write a story of this epic war waged by laptop.

I'm given to understand that men prefer the visual sort and women enjoy the written word a lot. Don't know how true that is.

As pointed out, if Sherlock wants to indulge, he has a lovely room full of naked Irene to visit. Or maybe even naked John, what do I know? Gay porn would also be normal.  So Magnussen only wants stuff he can use. The creepy illegal stuff.  Sherlock's "normal" porn preference is useless to him.  I just though it was a funny little line. I've been trying to read all the information CAM called up when he was assessing people. That one was just kind of...adorable for some reason. A great and brilliant mind who was in lust with another great and brilliant mind, has ordinary vanilla tastes. Don't get me wrong, vanilla's a great flavor. .

According to Big Keith on The Office, men are turned on by what they see and women are turned on by what they hear. Isn't that kinda the same thing -- linguistic representation?

I'm inclined to agree with those who are saying that Magnussen defines "normal" from a business perspective -- anything that cannot be used as a pressure point. Of course, that would differ from person to person. Some people would be mortified if anyone found out that they were interested in any porn whatsoever, whereas others would merely not care to be caught watching illegal stuff like child porn or snuff films.

Sherlock Holmes sexiest asset is his brain, as it defines everything that he works and lives for and porn is just a tiny part of that. To fancy and desire someone - your brain decides that and Sherlock is way beyond that.

Pretty sure we're meant to believe he fancied Irene Adler. And being super-smart does not preclude sexuality. There are plenty of  genius physicists/musicians/theoretical mathematicians who are total horn dogs.

Well I kind of agree: Magnussen is only interested in what he can use against people, but I do think he defines normal as non snuff/kiddie porn etc- legal.

But you'll gather I'm mortified at the thought of Sherlock using any porn...

Incidentally, how DO you spell' Magnussen'?!

I usually use: CAM.

Why wouldn't it? He's still a guy. I've yet to meet a single one who wouldn't look at porn at least occasionally, though I've met plenty who lied about it.

As for how I know, ask anyone who's into computers and has to fix the things on a regular basis .
