I'm pretty curious about the behind the scenes book..

got the case book and it's so good! I wonder if this new one is worth buying.. probably is

Here's some info on the new book. It's to be released on November 6th.

There's a book? Is there a DVD?

I will have to agree to disagree. The fact that he so quickly admits to confiscating it is a quick admission to the fact that he does look at porn - on John's computer, and John admits that Sherlock borrows it - but Sherlock's version of borrowing is confiscating.

I'm going to agree with sfmpco here and say that the exchange quoted above sounds to me like an admission that Sherlock has been viewing porn on John's laptop. For one thing, he knows John looks at porn and maybe has a few sites bookmarked or hasn't cleared out his browser history -- otherwise, why would it be easier to look at John's computer to find porn than his own? And I seriously doubt that John is watching porn in the living room; I think he'd be a bit more circumspect than that.

Second, I take the "I confiscate it" not as the opposite of "borrow" but as an intensifier. That is, not only does he look at porn on John's computer when he borrows it (implying John's knowledge) but also when he takes it without John's knowledge.

What I'm saying is that although Sherlock wears the mask of asexuality, beneath his skin is a perfectly red-blooded male. He just chooses to suppress that part of his life.

I agree with this, although I know there is no one correct perspective and the character can be interpreted many ways. I base my head canon on two studies that I've read (sorry, don't have citations right now because I read at least one of them in grad school). One study found that people with high IQ tend to be more highly sexed and/or perceive having more intense sexual urges than do people of average IQ. The other study found that people with high IQ tend to be more likely to have periods of voluntary celibacy in their lives, which I think is easy to understand. High IQ also correlates with a greater ability to perceive consequences to actions and to choose to delay gratification. So I think both sets of findings can be true simultaneously.

Taking those academic findings together, I assume that Sherlock both understands the potential negative consequences that can come from sexual activity and has a high or relatively high sex drive. The man needs an outlet of some type.

Hmmm. I must have an high IQ.

It's really okay to not be popular. However, you should really try to find an informant, one who runs with the usual crowd but isn't above letting you know what the general chatter is as long as you keep mum about it and don't talk to your mole publicly. That strategy kept me out of a lot of potential trouble - and it also meant that I was privy to all the rumors about my humble person, which was kind of amusing most of the time :D )

Oh, that's a great idea! Too bad I didn't think of it while I was still in school!

As far as I know, the new behind-the-scenes book (linked to above) is just a book. However, the Series 3 extended edition (or whatever they call it) DVD will reportedly also have some behind-the-scenes stuff.

Apropos of nothing in particular, I just found this quote in the infinity of the internet, and nearly spilled all my tea down the front of my sweater laughing:

the type of sex that you are attracted to in porn CAN honestly have no bearing whatsoever on your sexuality. unless you are a homophobic straight boy who watches gay porn. then you’re gay.

:D

Seriously, I wonder what Magnussen thought people's porn preferences told him about them.

... And I also wonder what Magnussen thinks is "normal" when it comes to pornography. I suppose that encompasses anything not scandalous and / or illegal enough to use for blackmail. So all I think we can deduce from the information that Sherlock has "normal" preferences according to Magnussen is that he has at some point looked at some kind of pornographic material, be it for fun, out of curiosity, for a case, a bet, a dare, research, whatever, and that the creep does not consider that material particularly noteworthy.

It's too bad we never saw Magnussen "read" Mycroft.

I think that's probably about it:  "normal" = "not useful"

The part that I find interesting is that by labeling Sherlock's porn preference "normal," we have the info, as Toby mentioned above, that he does in fact view/read porn.  Lady Smallwood's preference is given as "none," so Magnussen has at least a firm suspicion that she doesn't peruse porn.  Mrs. Hudson has a blank on her "file," so Magnussen doesn't know.  (I think she swipes Mrs. Turner's Playgirl magazines.)

"Porn preference normal" might also tell us that there is something of a normal/average frequency to the viewing (I'm going to say viewing, because it's more typical for men to prefer visual types of porn); I think that a single viewing or a single period of viewing for a case followed by nothing would not get flagged as normal by Magnussen.  I agree that, content-wise, all we know is that Magnussen probably feels he can't use the information for blackmail, so it has to be some fairly vanilla porn, although YMMV on what that would encompass.

And it has to be identifiable as porn, so we know that Sherlock is not exclusively viewing chemistry how-tos on YouTube that are hosted by a very attractive female chemist.....   ;)

Oh dear, now I've got to tell you about one time when my boyfriend and I crossed the border into Canada.  He was a physics instructor at a college up there, and while visiting me in the US, he had bought an instructional film strip entitled "Vibration of Molecules Demonstrated by Models."  (You see it coming, don't you?)  The Canadian customs guy said, "What's this? Vibrating models?!" and held the film up to the light to check it out.  He seemed disappointed when all he saw was a bunch of colored balls!

Wonder what Magnussen would make of him -- maybe "Porn preference: Wishful thinking"?

Googling "Sherlock porn preference normal" is totally what led me to find this forum. Heh.

I agree that Magnussen only cares about what can be used as currency, so "normal" equals legal.

Not that he's really the deciding vote but Cumberbatch certainly sees Sherlock as straight, based on his interviews where he talks about Sherlock choosing to abstain but still knowing how to please a woman (going off memory here, so definitely not quoting).

You are absolutely correct that he sees Sherlock as straight and his interview with ELLEUK where he talked about Sherlock knowing how to please a woman pretty much sent the fandom into massive drooling.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

Yes, welcome!  :welcome:

And it's good to know that Magnussen has supplied fans with yet another way of finding us!

I kind of found it a bit gross when I read it! Squicky!

I haven't seen it, as I've only watched Sherlock on Netflix. Is it available on YouTube?

Indeed. I am glad they got rid of it. If they had left it in, I would have had to fast-forward it every time I watch His Last Vow, and I'd find that quite annoying.

Agreed. I blink extra long when Magnussen licks Lady Smallwood's face as it is.
