I notice that it's just ASiP, ASiB and HLV that got those nominations and awards. At least, they are the only ones getting a mention. They just "happen to be" the three episodes Moffat wrote. I've said it before that I think he's the best writer on Sherlock, despite not having written my favorite episode (TRF), but instead having written perhaps my least favorite (ASiB). And HLV, well, that was initially like a punch in my stomach. However, they are, in my opinion, the most well written episodes, along with TRF. ASiB and HLV in particular can boast of some exquisite emotional scenes. ASiP is new, refreshing, and very sharp.

For the first two Series, I wasn't entirely sure what the algorithm was  -- did they enter the first episode or did they enter the one that Moffat wrote?  I strongly suspected the latter, but wasn't sure till that was confirmed for Series 3.

Now I'm wondering -- does he blithely assume that whichever episode he writes is ipso facto the best -- or when they're parceling out the writing, does he grab the juiciest story for himself?  Again, I suspect the latter.  (Perhaps along with just a smidge of the former.)

I agree that he's clearly a good writer, but so are the others (consider "Great Game" and "Reichenbach" in particular).  I kinda suspect that the other two tend to get stuck with writing the episodes that inherently have the least promise -- and if that's the case, then they've done really well.  (I'd like to see Moffat make anything of "The Blind Banker"!)

Good point! Of course it doesn't necessarily make him a better writer. Now that you mention it, I would have like to see one of the other writers take on His Last Vow! Simply to see if I would have liked it better in their hands.

The Empty Hearse, in particular, must have been tough just because of the expectations in the wake of The Reichenbach Fall. Kudos again for the amazing reunion scene!

Well each writer has their strength... Maybe Moffats style appeals to the general public more than just the die hard fans (Moriarty). Henceforth all the recognition for HLV.?

Good point. The casual viewer isn't going to notice the things we notice, probably ... I watched HLV several times before I started seeing the cracks in the plot. (Of course, I'm not the brightest bulb in the box, my brother would probably have picked them out as they were happening ... )

Does anyone know ... for the scriptwriting award, do the "judges" actually read the script, or just watch the show? Or both? (Altho I've heard sometimes they don't do anything except vote for the one that's "supposed" to be the best based on who's involved in it, or critical reaction to it, etc. The whole system's rather suspect, frankly.) Just curious.

It's certainly possible that Moffat's style has the most "mass appeal."

But if you're talking about awards nominations when you say "recognition" -- the reason it's always "Last Vow" is that the episode they entered in the competition was "Last Vow."  Just as it was "Study in Pink" for Series 1 and "Scandal in Belgravia" for Series 2.

Just read that Benedict won't be able to make it to the Emmys, because he is filming that night. That is really irritating, sorry to say, I know it's a job like any other job, but I just think it was that huge, that any production team would understand it, and reschedule. I hope, if he wins, that he is filming something.

His Last Vow did indeed win four Emmys ... for Outstanding Music Composition, Single-Camera Picture Editing, Sound Editing and Cinematography.

Congratulations! But my gut tells me those are the only ones it will get. I suppose Nick Hurran is in the running for the mind palace sequence, otherwise I think it's all Fargo and The Normal Heart this year.

Guess we'll all find out on Monday, August 25 at 8pm ET / 5pm PT -- just a week from tomorrow!

For those of you who've been wondering just how the nomination and voting process works, this page may answer your questions.

For those of us who plan to watch the live broadcast on an actual television, it'll be on NBC.

That may be the best thing I've ever seen on the Emmys.

Good to see the wonderful cinematography recognized as well!

Not meaning to ignore the editing categories -- it's just I don't know enough about those fields to have any idea.  Judging by the quality of the show overall, though, I'd guess that those Emmys are very well deserved.

What they've already awarded is the "creative arts" Emmys (meaning the behind-the-scenes stuff).  The in-front-of-the-camera awards will be presented a week from tonight (Monday August 25th) starting at 8 pm Eastern Time on NBC.  (The article that Alex linked to has more details.)

Interesting -- according to the full list at the bottom of that article, Fargo won only one Creative Arts Emmy, for casting.  Wonder how they'll do next week?

Oops -- I just noticed an ad on NBC saying the Emmy Awards program will actually begin at 7:30 pm Eastern Time.  Just guessing that may be for the red carpet coverage?

Usually, yeah.

Ah, yes -- the NBC home page says "Live! Monday 8pm ET. Red Carpet 7:30pm ET."

Those of us in the US can find our local NBC station here, and check their schedule to be sure (though you may have to hunt for that link -- television websites don't seem to be much about television programming these days!).
