I have zero interest in zombie or horror movies ....

Me neither. But if one describes Freeman's character as "a father who has only 48 desperate hours to save the life of his infant son," it sounds more like something I might want to watch. This article has a link to the short that the movie's based on (and which I will definitely NOT watch till after seeing the full-length version), which it describes as " as much a tearjerker as a horror-fest" -- so it's clearly not going to be a simplistic genre film.

... but I really like the sound of the Harrison Ford one.

Hey, Martin Freeman and Harrison Ford in the same movie -- what's NOT to watch?

Oops, or maybe it's his daughter -- to quote Empire, "The story will find Freeman as a father who is stranded in Australia in the aftermath of a violent pandemic and is desperately seeking a home for his most precious cargo – his infant daughter. It's a quest made all that much more difficult by the fact that he was bitten by his wife, and is slowly suffering the effects of the creeping zombification."

Poor guy's had more trouble with his wives lately!

Zombie film? Martin Freeman? No need to say more, I'm in!  :giggle:

My australian neighbors recently headed home for a year, they are actually from Adelaide...if I had a number or email I could tell them to make photos or something if they are close to the set. :P But I can ask them next year if they came across Martin Freeman.  :D

Well, you could try sending them a letter at their address near you. They're presumably having their mail forwarded to Australia.

Good idea, but I don't think they do that (maybe in the post office, but I don't know), because there are other people living in their apartment for a year now, and I don't know them...only their names (which are on their letter box now, it's a spanish couple, that's what my aussie neigbors have told me before leaving. I haven't met them yet and they have not been introduced to me. We're a house of many people, hardly people know each other. I just happened to know the lovely aussies for they have two kids and they asked me if they could see the rabbits, that's how we got to know each other actually...). Would be cooler if I knew who the spanish people were, then I could tell them, but if I do not know people it would be pretty weird (to me) to ring their door for that sort of question to forward a letter....it's not like it's an emergency or something. ;P

I told them to send me a postcard from down under, but they just left a lovely card in my mailbox when departing. So I'll have to ask them when they are back next year, if they noticed something in their neighborhood in autumn. :giggle:

Definitely not my type of show but Martin's American accent is brilliant.

I gather it's some sort of cable-only thing, so it's all sort of a moot point for me until/unless it comes out on video. Actually, that looks like the sort of thing I'd rather watch on video, so I can skim the bits that unsettle me.

By the way, does anyone know what became of "The Eichmann Show?" That was something I'd really like to have seen. Was it well received? (Code: will PBS pick it up? )

Dunno about PBS (or BBCAmerica, more likely), but Eichmann is available on DVD. Good show, interesting format.

But as I understand it, StartUp is not cable, it's streaming internet.

Even worse. for me. :(

S'okay, I'd rather see Eichmann anyway. :) This one looks a bit, um, harsh.

Yeah, does. I'll presumably try the first ep or two, if I can get the streaming to work for me, then decide whether to continue. Certainly wouldn't watch it at all if it weren't for Freeman being in it

Thanks for posting that preview of Start Up.  It actually looks really intriguing to me.  (Kind of like a mash up of Burn NoticeHalt & Catch Fire, and Weeds, if I'm perceiving it right.)  I need to figure out my viewing options when it premieres.

SherlockedCAMPer is right, MF's American accent is amazing.  It would be worth watching just to enjoy the cognitive dissonance of hearing that accent come out of that mouth.

You know, Freeman is becoming more and more of a "draw" to me for shows and movies.  I find myself saying, "let's give this a try, because MF is in it, so it's probably good."  I hope that sticks, because that's a pretty rare thing for me.

That's one reason I watched Fargo in the first place.  Fortunately, the cognitive dissonance lasted only about fifteen minutes.  After that, I just enjoyed the show.  (I loved it; Alex tolerated it.  Dark whimsy is apparently not everyone's cup of tea!)

Agreed.  I think I've seen nearly all of his available-on-DVD major and medium roles (and some of the minor ones), and so far have been disappointed only a few times.  Not all of them are great, mind you, but the vast majority are quite enjoyable.  And there's a huge range of styles, from downright silly (Ali G Indahouse) to downright arty (Nightwatching), but apparently his taste is fairly similar to mine (eclectic?), so I generally trust his judgment.

(In my opinion) you might want to avoid

The All Together, Swinging With the Finkels, and Men Only.

That's the thing; it's not just liking an actor, it's trusting his judgement.

Noted on the "to avoid."  Since I'm not wedded to the idea of collecting the complete set of Freeman Viewing Experiences, I can give those a pass.

Here's a review of StartUp.  Note that it may be a bit spoilery in a manner of speaking (depending on why you might watch the show), and it's based on the rough cut sent to critics.

Hmmmm. I'm not completely sure I agree with his (?) premise; sometimes I don't care how "accurate" the tech stuff is. What is Crackle, again? Based on the little clip they have with Martin, I might give it a try. Although 4 sex scenes in the first hour doesn't bode well for it being the kind of thing I want to watch.

I'll give it a try. Guess it partly depends on what the reviewer means by "sex scene." I'm no financial expert, which may be just as well here, but shows that are sloppy with technical details do tend to bug me, if I notice -- and I suspect that even I would have caught

"liquidity of the dollar."

Mostly, though, I have the feeling that this show is a bit too gritty-chic for my taste.

And I'm just dumb enough to think that sounds like a sensible statement! :-D (This is why I don't play the stockmarket... )

Yeah, same same, just have to wait and see how "hardcore" it is. The reviewer sounded a bit jaded, I can't really tell much about the show from his review.

BTW, the link you provided led to some of Martin's scenes in "WTF", and I think it's just as well I never managed to see it ... I watched for several minutes, and didn't care for any of it. Well, wait ... I rather enjoyed Martin's karaoke! But none of the dialog was to my taste, so ... yeah, not sorry I missed it after all. That's so frustrating to me, when an actor I really like keeps doing films I don't care to see. (Black Mass, anyone?) Just too old-fashioned, I guess, but I keep hoping someone will do something along the lines of "Love Actually" again, but with the current crop of "hot" actors. Who would play the Hugh Grant roles, d'you think?

To answer your question about Crackle, it's Sony's answer to Netflix and Amazon Prime.
