I only wear baggy androgynous clothes when I'm running this route, loose joggers, hoody, beanie.

I'm starting to think that you mean something different by "beanie" than I do.  Over here it's basically a skullcap (like a Jewish yarmulke), except that when it's called a beanie, it's usually in a bright color and may have some sort of insignia on it.  College freshmen used to be told to wear green beanies with the college logo on it as a sort of initiation ritual (though by the time I started college, very few freshmen complied).  There used to be a tradition that a cartoon character shown wearing a beanie with a propeller on top was a science-fiction fan.  Dunno if anyone actually wears any sort of beanies anymore.

So what does it mean over there?

Oops, meant to respond to your jogging incident as well.

One place where I used to work was very near a walking trail along an old canal, which would have been a lovely, peaceful place to walk -- but even though it paralleled a busy road, it was obscured by trees, so I never went walking there except for the few times when I had a companion.  I usually walked through a student-housing complex instead, which was a pretty nice setting, just not as nice as the canal path.

Which is to say, I agree with those advising caution.  Who knows, you might find an even nicer place to jog.

The promenade is probably the nicest place to jog, but getting there early enough to not have it be even dodgier is the challenge. Where I used to work loads of people would walk through this little muddy trail through the woods to the office, even when they were on the late shift so were walking through at night, and I was horrified how many of the women seemed to think nothing of it. I would only walk there with company in the day, and even then I wasn't keen, but some of those people would just serenely head off into the woods on their own in pitch darkness.

A beanie is a knitted hat, sometimes slouchy, sometimes closer to the head, sometimes with a bobble, sometimes without. I live in beanies through the winter, means not having to bother wrestling my hair.

There's a young RAF pilot in my office buying stuff. TAKE ME WITH YOOOOU!!!

Other than the aforementioned propeller beanie, Google Images seems to agree with you, so maybe the term has changed meaning over here as well.  On the other hand, both the Oxford and Collins dictionaries seem to define the word in the skullcap sense, but then give examples and/or illustrations of what you're talking about.  And Wikipedia has a page for "Beanie (seamed cap)" that matches my meaning, but also cross-references their "Knit cap" page for your meaning.

I would refer to your sort of headgear as a knit cap, or if I'm talking with Alex (who's a big hockey fan) I might say tuque (apparently from French-Canadian toque, but rhymes with duke).

Just found out someone on my street was murdered on the weekend. :o I'd seen all the police but thought it was something fairly minor.

Eesh.  Any idea whether it was a family spat gone bad, or what?

Not sure yet, they are still arresting people but not releasing any information about them.

Apparently not a serial killer still on the loose, then.  Good!

I've lived in neighborhoods at the time of a suicide, a couple of robberies, and a full-scale drugs raid, but mercifully no murders.  If there ever is one in my current neighborhood, I have a pretty good idea who'd be involved. (Not sure whether he'd be the perp or the victim, though.)

Uh oh, a bad egg?

Yup.  To quote you from another thread, "a most disagreeable chap."  A convicted thief and a blatant racist and sexist, among other character deficiencies.

How I'm very happy with my neighborhood hearing those murders and disagreeable chaps you have over there! I hope Sherlock sorts it out soon.

Hi Douglas, mine is so so, since it's Monday. Recently we have a lot of new people at work and they are all... extroverts. I can't have peace at work. Noisy!!! At least they have given up asking me to hang out outside work. I used to have one fellow introvert who was kind enough to help me out from these kind of situations but now, nope. They are all kind and nice to me though, but I miss those peaceful days.

It's getting harder to escape, they had square in the area that I live, not sure how long I could refuse to enclose it. And for upcoming business trip, one tries to match the flight. It would be hellish to stuck with him on the plane. Again, he is nice and quite interesting, but I need... silence.

I've come in to a pile of work this morning, but I have no energy to move.

Hi Van Buren Supernova,

I really do understand how you feel, and I'm so sorry that you're in this situation: especially in your place of work! I hope that things improve for you very soon.

Take care.

Kindest Regards, always,

Douglas

I was bundling wire earlier, minding my own business, headphones on with loud music playing when I realised I could hear a really loud engine over the top of it. Stuck my head out the door to see what was going on, and saw a really low chinook flying over. :D

Lots of midges out this evening. Got one in my eye and inhaled one. Yuck.

As far as I know, a chinook is either a meteorological phenomenon or a salmon.  Didn't know either of them had engines.  ;)

OK, maybe you mean one of these.  You'd be able to hear one of those even if you were deaf!

I knew it was a tribe, but not the other two. Nope, this is the chinook I meant, pretty impressive to see just moseying by. :D

What I love is when you see them in air shows and they go completely vertical, very cool.

Ah, cross post. Yes that is what I meant. ;)

I should probably add I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to RAF jets etc, so I was thrilled.

And I didn't know it was a tribe (or, apparently, group of related tribes) till I read the Wikipedia article about the helicopter.  This forum gets more educational every day!

I knew about the winds, the chopper, & the salmon, but not the tribal group. Interesting.

We've had them quite often here, and the old good Huey's -  as long as the US army was stationing all over the country. They were still okay though noise-wise, compared with low-level flights of jet fighters. The jets were gone as fist, the helicopters disappeared gradually over the years, but I have heard one recently. :)

BTW, isn't it amazing those helicopters are almost the same since 1950ies? It's 70 years!

Guess they got that one right the first time!  :D

What I find crazy are delta wing jets from the '50s, like the Vulcan, that still look futuristic even though they are so old.

Shown well in the first 30 seconds of this.

The forum is messing with me, it was just adamant 'look' was spelt wrong to the point I started doubting it was a word.
