I second Arcadia on the 4-5C as not being that cold but I also see windchills (& the occasional air temperature) at -40C/F. I also live in one of the coldest states in the US.

Cold *state* yeah -- but you don't exactly live in Frostbite Falls, right?

What's the coldest it's ever been in the place you were in at the time?

I'm several hours south of Frostbite Falls (aka International Falls for all of you who may not know). I have friends who used to live there. But even that border doesn't hold the record for coldest. That goes to Tower or Embarrass with -60F air temp. Coldest I've had is -70F windchill, air temp was around -40C/F or slightly colder. And yes that was a record for us. Just might not have been that cold at the airport (an hour southeast in an inner-ring suburb) with all of the planes.

OK, you win!  The record cold here is -27 F (-33 C).

The really cool thing (so to speak) about your record of -40 is that (as you indicated) you don't need to specify which scale you're using.  Fahrenheit and Celsius coincide at that point, and of course Kelvin doesn't have negative temperatures.

The coldest weather I endured was a several weeks of extreme cold with around -25C. In Poland in 1987. Now I know that if your nose starts to freeze inside it's -15C. freez1.gif

December of 1981 was also near as cold, but I spent the time at home, so I wasn't that much affected by it.

I've noticed that same phenomenon (only it feels to me more like the inside of each nostril is collapsing, so that the sides stick together) at around +5 F which would be umm, (5 - 32) x 5/9 = -15 C.  Zowie, it's an international phenomenon!!!

Does anyone here know Gaelic?  I'm looking for translations and (especially) pronunciations of a certain word.  I'd like the translation/pronunciation of the word in Welsh too, if anyone speaks that (Pseud?).

Yes that was nearly 22 years ago. Minnesota is past due for a crazy winter like that complete with all that snow only without the flooding that happened along the Red River of the North.

Yep, February '96... I think it was my mom's birthday. Schools were cancelled. Everything was cancelled, lol. My parents didn't go anywhere because the car wouldn't start. The weathermen warned against stepping foot outside because exposed skin could get frostbite in like 2 minutes. It was a beautiful bright sunny day. :P

I fail to recall the temps, but the 2010-2011 winter season delivered pretty well on snow at least. I remember so much snow building up on my deck overnight, I went outside with a yardstick and a camera to photograph it; but the snow was so high it buried my yardstick and I had to dig it out, lol. That was probably the same snowstorm that caved in the roof of the Metrodome.

December 12, 2010 was the last time the dome collapsed. I think that was the weekend johnspec had a birthday party for a friend in the middle of a blizzard. I got him there and back home safely but it sure took awhile.

I don't remember the temperature, except that it was below freezing, but I do remember that awful insides-of-nose freezing thing when we lived in the mountains in North Carolina. Ooog, we had some brutal days up there. It was great.

Your English is good enough that we can understand you well enough -- so no problem!

Exactly. Your English is certainly a hundred times better than my Turkish, that's for sure!
