Eurgh, I've had to cave and accept the help I spent last Friday arguing I didn't want.

Posted

Yea. The boiler repairs are just too expensive. :(

I did try to explain on Saturday that saying 'well if you don't need the money then don't be so stressed' wasn't exactly helpful because then it meant I had no one to talk to about being stressed, but saying 'I'm stressed' didn't automatically mean 'I want to lend money' but I don't think they quite got it. Then I got the phone call of doom from the plumber (expecting another one this morning) and had to cave anyway.

Omg, it's just getting worse and worse! It's up to £600 quid now and they can't come out again until tomorrow evening. ARRGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Posted

Owch. Sorry, Pseud. Are they going to repair, or replace?

Posted

Repair. I hope. Replace would be a few thousand.

Ah, the joys of home ownership. I've been going through some similar stuff lately. Living in a yurt is starting to look good to me.

... or maybe not. Maybe I'll just return to my shrub in Carol's garden.

Just give me a little advance notice, 'cause if you show up unannounced, you can't really expect much from me.  Not that you could expect much anyhow.  Maybe I'd better go get those shrubs dusted, just in case....

Can I bring my dog for visit? He lovessss dusted shrub. One time he lifted his leg so high....

Anyway, I assume boiler means something to heat up your water? (I imagine cauldron to cook naughty kids in fairy tales but I could be wrong)

Are you sure with that amount you can't buy new one? I did a quick google it seems like some could cost less, but then again, I don't really know.

Back then, I remember we had asked around our water heater and it cost around your repair cost, even less if I remember correctly, but it was quite long time ago. That reminds me of the story when I just started work and shared a house with my collegues, all newly recruited. It was summer but she was the chilly kind, so she woke up early every morning to boil water manually, mixed it up in a bucket and use it for shower.

I'd been assuming that Pseud's boiler was primarily used to supply steam or hot water to radiators that heat her house.  That would be the American usage of the term.  A device that supplies hot water for washing, etc., is called a water heater here (though I suppose some boilers might do both jobs).  So which is it, Pseud?

In any case, in addition to the cost of the boiler itself, there's also the labor fee for installation.

Hey, i don't mind -- you're the one who'll be staying in the shrub!  And I'm sure the shrub would appreciate the high-nitrogen fertilizer.

There are different types of boilers, mine provides the central heating for the house and provides the hot water. My shower also runs off it, you can get electric showers, but the ones that run directly off the boiler tend to be more powerful.

I'm up hideously early this morning in order to get home in plenty of time for them to turn up. I'm quite impressed that I got into the office within an hour of waking up, even though it's a half hour drive... usually takes me longer than that to get ready in the morning. It was dark when I got up.... winter is on the way.

I can now join the "broken water heater / boiler" club. Yay. Our building management says they will "get back to us" and "send somebody". Mhm... The last broken device they said this about is still broken and has been for a while.

Fortunately, my husband was able to give me instructions over the phone on how to do a temporary fix so that I can at least shower once in a while. When he gets home, I hope he will be able to do more. Things always break when he is away and unfortunately, when it comes to technology and repairs, we are a terribly traditional couple. I can't do anything halfway productive with tools. Except maybe hang up pictures.

Eurgh, my misery spreads.

I can't say I want to have to do things, I just don't have a choice. That's what I want when everything gets a bit much, someone just to say "I'll take care of that, don't worry about it," even if it's just in regards to dealing with tradesmen.

Oh, I get that. I am glad that I lived on my own for a long time because that made me fairly competent (although when stuff broke all I ever did was call a repair service or get a friend or relative to look at it), but I love being married because it's so nice to be able to divide up the chores.

That's why I try to never say winter is coming anymore, because all I hear is Ned Stark.

How do you "temporarily" fix a water heater?

Boiler is STILL not fixed. They reckon another part needs changing. But they've pushed me to the limit now, I'm going to call up tomorrow and demand to speak to the boss. I did call tonight but the f*cker had already gone home, which is annoying because I was furious and it probably will have faded by tomorrow. I'm not much of a complainer but I was so angry when this plumber went, I was ready to start ranting.

Probably better you get to calm down, actually … hard to think clearly when you're angry. Well, hard  for me, at any rate.

Ew, gah …. a gnat just flew up my nose.....

Sorry about your boiler saga, I know how frustrating all this stuffs could be.

Had to repair my pump just a month ago, consisting of them needing to pull put the whole length of pipe (it's ground well) just to change something at the bottom. It wasn't my regular repairman, but thankfully this one seems to be equally honest and good. I was extremely lucky, the pump ran as if nothing wrong, but I suspected something was off from the sound and the way it produced air around seemed wrong, so I called anyway and fixed appointment on the weekend. He arrived just at the right time, half an hour after the water stop. Can't imagine lasting more than couple of hours without fresh water when I had just came back from the beach and cooking breakfast. The other day my gas stove stopped working but magically the solution was found on YouTube.

Having said that, it's really a disappointment that none of you interpret boiler as cauldron for cooking children. Sigh.. sometimes I feel so alone here.

No no, I'm not staying. I'd just drop by and leave early.

And yet, my nose is deemed unworthy compared to gnat infested nose!

You just keep lighting the flame again and cross your fingers that the reason it keeps going off is a faulty sensor and not a gas leak...
