I wasn't talking about Victorian men in general, just Victorian Holmes. The illustrations I so little appreciate - that's what he's "supposed" to look like, after all. Here:

He is. If I am not mistaken, this is from "The Man with the twisted lip" (the case the beginning of His Last Vow is based on), where Holmes stays up all night, seated on a pile of cushions, and chain-smokes until morning in front of the fire until the solution dawns on him along with the morning.

 

One of my favorite original scenes, so of course I chose that picture.

Yes, heaven help me, I've been worrying about that too. Gah!! I keep remembering they've said the special was literally and figuratively dark ... aghgghh! Mycroft, what have you done with your little brother!?!?!?!? (Forced him to wear a truly ugly hairdo, apparently, among other things. Mycroft must die ......)

Oh, I hope not! Mycroft is absolutely essential in the stories to keep his little brother in check as much as possible, provide important contrast to the rather comical childishness that they have written for their main character, as well as government insights, the occasional visit to the Diogenes club and his very detached, superior mind and manner.

Are we going to get into the whole curly mop argument all over again?

He could not look like any of those pictures because of his quiet primness of dress. The Victorian version would look pretty much what we see in the photos on Twitter.

The production team must be about as frantic as dear Arcadia for the Oscars ceremony to be over, so they can get their hands on his hair and create the silly mop to start his present-day scenes properly. It's only a week from now!

The Oscars ceremony, then he will have to get back to Baker Street modern style and the whole curly mop thing will start again, and if you notice the pictures we have been seeing on Twitter, that hair is growing longer, so the hair fanatics will get their wish, although I do hope and pray for a shorter, more mature version this time!

Of course he can't keep that hairstyle for ever. It will look ridiculous when he starts becoming bald. But he's not that old yet... I want at least another season of Byronic beauty.

Toby dear, as you may know baldness runs in families and is partly genetically inherited. If his father can boast such a head of hair at nearly eighty, and you can see that in both TEH and HLV along with the cheekbones and the voice timbre, he is not going bald anytime soon, either, however much the hairstylists may maltreat it, but as he is going on 39, he has to mature a bit, so there!

Nothing essentially wrong with that, unless you have pressing household chores that you neglect in favour of the forum! And what's wrong about cuddly toys? I still have one or two I was given as a child, and absolutely cherish a Steiff teddy-bear my aunt gave me for my thirtieth birthday, and a stuffed Emperor penguin which I bought before the Madagascar craze, named Olaf.

You are addressing a 30-year-old female breadwinner who is spending her day off in bed babbling on a fan forum and cuddling with her stuffed animals while listening to rebellious teen rock and eating gum drops shaped like shoes. I like my fictional characters to grow up reluctantly, if at all, as well.

Didn't we discuss her possible fate in that thread about Mary Morstan? She does not belong in the series permanently. How they are going to accomplish that particular feat of legerdemain is their problem, they should not have made her get pregnant in SoT.
