I know some fans are not happy at Amanda suggesting Mary is back in S4...but I guess she'd have to be for ep 1 at least.

Posted

Surely they wouldn't kill her off in the Victorian Christmas special, right?!?!?   I figured they'd save it for the regular series.

Right, but if her comment isn't related to them killing off Mary, which per canon has to happen at some point, then that means... it means.. I can't even say it...

Didn't we discus her possible fate in that thread about Mary Morstan? She does not belong in the series permanently. How they are going to accomplish that particular feat of legerdemain is their problem, they should not have made her get pregnant in SoT.

At this point no one knows how they are going to deal with her character or the baby, but if she dies and the baby is alive, I can't see John moving back to 221B and he and Sherlock co-parenting.  So we'll toss that out the window.

Mary knows how to disappear and create a new identity.  It's very possible that she could do that again, particularly if she felt John was in danger because of her.  I don't think we'll see something really horrible like Mary and the baby gunned down.  Mary gunned down is one thing but a baby gunned down is another level of don't want to go there.  So we'll toss that one out the window too.

The thing is, if it's a Christmas episode, it would be either the Christmas BEFORE John and Mary got married or the Christmas a year after Magnussen is shot in which case the baby would be nearly a year old.

I'm sort of leaning towards the Christmas before they got married but I could be wrong.  Still, they may back up the story a bit.

As for the rest of S4, I have no idea how they will handle Mary's exit.  But dang, another HUGE  drama for John.  How much stress can one guy take?

John and Sherlock co-parenting DOES present limitless possibilities of farce, camp humour and endless mishaps, like Three Men and a Baby (that was a girl, too) , or Asterix and Obelix having to babysit baby Caesarion because Cleopatra wanted to protect him from Brutus.

In that case, Sherlock would definitely treat it as a problem, if we can go by the way he planned the marriage, but imagine all the minor heart attacks John might suffer!

Would make excellent material for a fanfiction short story, as well! That is one of the best ideas we will never see (sigh)!

I think that Sherlockians everywhere would be up in arms about that kind of development.  Besides, Moffat and Gatiss have promised a darker S4.  Not to say that there won't be humor.  Much of the time Sherlock just has to open his mouth with some snarky retort and there is humor born.

I do wonder about CAM's wedding telegram where he mentioned Mary's family...because it really unnerved her.  I suspect we'll find out more in S4.

Oh, please don't toss it out of the window! Obviously we will never see something like this because then they will have broken every rule in their book, and all their episodes tend to have a rather dark side to them, but could we play around with your idea a bit?

Haven't had occasion to laugh out loud in this forum, especially with the whole HLV discussion, but just envisioning the two of them trying to bring up a baby is delightful and a bit scary at the same time. How would you go about it, smpfco, if it were a working hypothesis as a script?

Well, IF that were a scenario, and IF John moved back into 221B, I can see Mrs. Hudson taking on a grandmotherly role.  I can see Sherlock being completely innept and changing diapers and perhaps wearing his safety goggles when he had to do so.  I can see SH visiting with Lestrade over a murder and SH having a bit of baby vomit on his shoulder that he forgot to clean off.  I can see John pacing all night with a crying baby and Sherlock yelling "shut up" and the baby shutting up.  I can see Sherlock trying to calm a crying baby in all sorts of unusual ways that no normal parent would ever consider.  I can see John coming back from an errand and Sherlock is asleep on the sofa with the baby on his chest.  I can see Sherlock sitting at his computer looking at the same types of crime scene pictures he showed Archie but with Baby Watson in his lap.  I can see SH reading bedtime stories to baby Watson that are murder mysteries...

Need I go on?

Type it out, wrape it up, send it. I'd love that! I can see the SHUT UP scene in my head :')

Dear sfmpco, yes, do please, please, please, go on. Could we ask Carol to move this discussion to another place and speculate about it?

I can see Sherlock analysing all available baby formulas to choose the most appropriate while John grabs the cheapest thing on the supermarket shelf, I can see Sherlock dragooning his mum and dad's help in order to learn exactly how to feed, change and burp a baby, I can see Mrs. Hudson being drafted into the role of babysitter when Lestrade comes calling with another case, I can see John trying to put the baby to sleep while one of Sherlock's experiments goes wrong and explodes in the kitchen, producing a squall from the terrified infant. There are a lot of things he could try playing on his violin to distract or calm her, as the case might be. If he bothered to learn to do serviettes, he would take such infinite care of that baby girl that if anyone ever threatened her safety, he would probably tear them limb from limb with his bare hands. And I can see Mycroft in the role of a most unwilling surrogate Uncle, being forced to hold her, or calm her or even sing a lullaby to her! This is heavenly!

Oh, this is such fun!

I can see both of them taking turns to take her out in her pram and Sherlock trying to teach her about every flower and its toxicological properties, of him reading bedtime stories from past cases, of making HER the centre of his world as part of his vow, so that ridiculous disagreements would erupt between him and John, of his giving up smoking because there is now a baby in the flat, of his ineffectual attempts to keep up with his experiments without exposing her to any hazardous materials, of his forcing himself to keep everything proper and tidy because there is now a baby in the flat, and it can no longer resemble a dump, of his refusing to use babytalk and having to slow down and enunciate every word while she gurgles contentedly at him, of his handing her to the first available pair of arms if the game is on again, of Sherlock forcing Molly to turn GP in the case of the baby, of  both of them leaving the baby with a thoroughly flummoxed Mycroft at the Diogenes club to go investigating.

This I would give a lot to see!

Damn! You guys you are making Sherlock into a sitcom. What call we call it?

Dear Sarina,

Feel free to jump in at any moment. It is an alternate universe, so we are creating our own Special, which would be about thirty minutes overall, definitely not a series! There would definitely be a case in there for them to investigate. Any ideas on a case you would like to see them investigating?

Well there is a ACD Sherlock story called Wisteria Lodge (or something like that) so we could have the baby named Wisteria and title the episode/special Wisteria's Stronghold (as she has daddy & uncle Sherlock wrapped around her little finger as the expression goes).

Absolutely, definitely yes! That baby would fulfil his vow in ways that cannot be envisioned by the creators. I think we could send them on a jewel theft case, much like The Blue Carbuncle, to keep the story short and bring them back to the flat in time for her evening feed. Any suggestions about how they would deal with teething problems? Dr Watson cannot properly deal with her because all doctors traditionally avoid treating members of their own family. Maybe Molly, as younger and a doctor in her own right could come up with a soothing formula, which, of course, the overprotective uncle Sherlock would analyse chemically down to its last ingredient before allowing John to use it on Baby Watson.

Excuse me...even while we're wandering along this flight of fancy:  breast is best. No formula required.  Nature usually delivers the goods.

Teething?   Rub in the Bonjela!

Sorry, but we started on the premise that Mary's past has at long last caught up with her, and Mrs Hudson and Mother Holmes are too old to breast feed, so it must be formula from the day little Ms Wisteria Mary Watson (fine alliteration by the way, Sherlockedcamper) comes to the flat. Kitchen table cleared of all scientific equipment to make room for baby bottle steriliser is also a possibility, fridge stocked properly with anything needing refrigeration, natural serum and such like, little violin pieces from Mozart and adaptations for the violin from Schubert and Chopin also a likelihood, and we would need dear Arcadia's teddy bear and other cuddly toys. What do you think Sherlock might consider appropriate for the baby who would have become the apple of his eye, since he liked her mother enough to cover up her shooting of him, and the father is his best friend?

Yeah, sorry, I know...

As much as I would like the Baker Street boys bringing up baby...

I can't see Mark and Steven going down that route...

I wonder why they did write her in?

I fear we may lose her...

Exactly, no babies anywhere on the Sherlock horizon, which is why I begged sfmpco to hypothesize a script outline for just this eventuality. We need to have some fun with speculation, it cannot always be us analysing everything to bits. We could make up little bits and pieces that satisfy our inmost hopes and wishes for our favourite characters.

 Don't talk to me about maturing. You are addressing a 30-year-old female breadwinner who is spending her day off in bed babbling on a fan forum and cuddling with her stuffed animals while listening to rebellious teen rock and eating gum drops shaped like shoes. I like my fictional characters to grow up reluctantly, if at all, as well.

Nothing essentially wrong with that, unless you have pressing household chores that you neglect in favour of the forum! And what's wrong about cuddly toys? I still have one or two I was given as a child, and absolutely cherish a Steiff teddy-bear my aunt gave me for my thirtieth birthday, and a stuffed Emperor penguin which I bought before the Madagascar craze, named Olaf.

I don't think grown ups are allowed on this forum, are they? I haven't noticed any.

I paint my nails with glittery Sherlock named nail polishes. I'm pretty sure I've relinquished my adult card.

I gave up my grownup card a long time ago and have no desire to reclaim it.

What grown-up card?  I don't think I ever got one.  I'm 36, look 25, act closer to 20 if that old sometimes.

With Benedict's Sherlock, it's all about the curls.  It's part of the established look.  You may as well remove his Belstaff too.

Shhhhh, don't give them any ideas!!!

Yes gotta keep the curls and coat.  When I see Benedict in both of those, the first thing that comes to mind is Sherlock not Benedict as Sherlock so yeah, got to keep the established look at least in the modern world.

Could we ask Carol to move this discussion to another place ... ?

My thoughts exactly!  :D  (Last pageful or so -- excepting the post just before this -- moved here from another thread.)

Hi, Pamela.

It all started quite seriously in the Christmas Special filming news, about the possibility of keeping the baby alive after its mother had met her fate at the hands of her former victims' families perhaps, but because we speculated at length, it would not have been suitable, so it's much better to end up in rumours than having to hide a highly entertaining hypothesis, because, as smpfco rightly pointed out, Dr. Watson could be quite a responsible single parent. It is only when you add Sherlock to the equation that chaos ensues
