I'm definitely a subtitle person.  If I don't think about reading the subtitles and just let it happen I generally don't find them that distracting.  I can't stand when the video and audio don't line up.

Dubbing tends to strike me as funny, so I get the giggles and laugh at scenes that are supposed to be sad.  While I agree that subtitles are distracting, I nevertheless consider them the lesser of two evils.

I think I mentioned this in the Hobbit thread a year or two ago, but one time we tried turning on both the Spanish dubbing and the Spanish subtitles, because I figured it'd be relatively easy for me to understand the Spanish that way (I often don't listen fast enough to understand spoken Spanish).  However I was having a horrible time with it -- till I realized that the dubbing and the subtitles were using two entirely different translations!

That is bad.  They should at least agree on the translation.

Yeah, seems like it would cost more that way, too.  But maybe there were other considerations, like -- well, I have no idea, but then I've never been involved in anything like that.

I should perhaps clarify by saying that near as I could tell, the two translations were equally valid, just quite different wordings at times.

I've noticed the same thing in a few Japanese anime. In those cases, the subtitles were basically a more literal translation, whereas the dub was more colloquial English. I just assumed it was deliberate, but now I wonder. It was kind of cool to compare them.

I agree with Caya, I find subtitles highly distracting. That's why I only use them when two things come together: 1) the German dub is awful so that I want to watch the original version and 2) the orginal version is hard to understand. Well, or if a like a film so much that I want to see the original version even though 1 doesn't apply but 2 is still true. But I only use the subtitles one time so that I know roughly what's being said, then I watch the film/... some more times without them until I understand everything without them. That can take some time but I see it as a chance to practice and am proud when I finally "master" the film.

But I don't have a general problem with dubs. Sometimes they can even improve an actor's performance - and sometimes the opposite is the case. It really depends. Some dubbers are really good and in my opinion don't get enough credit for their work. What really sucks is when they change an actor's dubber. For example Sir Ian McKellen's dubber from the Lord of the Rings movies died, so the Hobbit Gandalf has another voice. The new dubber doesn't do a bad job, but Gandalf still tears me out of the world whenever he opens his mouth because I keep thinking that it's the wrong voice (and it doesn't help either that I associate his voice with that of Arthur Spooner). And I don't usually mind that the words don't exactly fit the lip movements. That bothers me only in very obvious cases like Sam in LotR2 saying "po-ta-toes" (lips: round-open-round) vs. "Kar-tof-feln" (lips: open-round-open) right into the camera.

Especially if that particular series is rife with wordplays then it usually would be ruined by dubbing effort. English-based dub usually assign wrong voice actors and thus messing up the characters. -_-" Type of voice and intonation matters a lot to me, it is part of the whole experience and make characters who they are.

Unfortunately, the word play is going to escape me anyway, as I've forgotten more Japanese than I ever learned! :D  A really good dub like Full Metal Alchemist I actually prefer. Hate what they did to Macross, though.

Let us hope that never again Saban gets their hands on any Japanese series  :P

Thank you Carol the Dabbler, Caya and SherlockCamper for the welcome (and for the nice comments about my avatar). Sadly it isn't my own horse, but I live in hope that one day I will own a horse!

There are some sections of the forum I will avoid until I've seen all of the episodes although I don't know when I'll get season 3, I actually went to the shop this morning to buy it but they didn't stock it :(  This is the problem with Belgium sometimes, as I don't think Sherlock is very well known here, nowhere sells the DVDs. Maybe I'll get it for Chrismas, I've dropped enough hints to my boyfriend! :D

I hope your boyfriend listens good.  In the mean time, there is a mini episode that goes between S2 and S3 called "Many Happy Returns."  It's on the BBC Youtube channel here:

And welcome to the forum!

I'm from the state Illinois in the USA.

I became a Sherlock fan while in high school. My mystery class was a semester course and we dedicated the whole semester to Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. When there were days when there wasn't really much to do except a couple worksheets, the teacher would put Sherlock on for us to watch. She even had it playing during the 20 question final. I watched season one and season two in a matter of two weeks.

I'm really glad I happened upon this site. It's good to know that not all Sherlock fans are over in the UK. To me, there aren't that many Sherlock fans here in the US or they haven't really heard of it. But, that just might be in my area.  :P

Welcome to the forum and I hope you just jump right into the coversations!

It's my impression that, while a large percentage of the British population has heard of and even watched Sherlock, that's just because it's on a popular channel there.  I've met a number of British people who aren't particularly impressed by the show.  Although fewer Americans have even heard of the show, those who have actually seen it are generally impressed by it, presumably because the channel it's on (PBS) tends toward more serious programming, so the audience is somewhat self-selected.  I seem to have met very few Americans who have seen Sherlock and didn't care for it.  But we're greatly outnumbered by people who've never heard of it!

Not only have they not heard of it, many of those few who have seen it, have seen it but not observed it!!!!  One must be careful in starting conversations with those who have only seen it.  They are not interested in unending discussions about it.  They are not the fandom!

There are a zillion threads... including one per episode... just click on the button at the top called "View New Content" and peruse the threads... you're sure to find some place to put your observations.  If you absolutely can't find the right place, jus start a new thread, and if it's already covered somewhere, the admn will move it to the appropriate thread.

I was there once over 15 years ago shortly before the winter monsoon rains. Beautiful country from the parts I saw (KL & PJ plus a village somewhere not to far from the western coast).
