Episode 3.0, "Many Happy Returns" (7-min. Mini-Ep)

I have been searching online for any discussion about why Anderson so desprately wants Sherlock to be back. However, one scene stood out to me in The Reichenbach Fall, when Sherlock was investigating the child's room in the boarding school. When Anderson tried to make a deduction, Sherlock said,"Good". Anderson seemed incredulous and flattered by the recognition and responds with "Really"? Then of course Sherlock told him that it was "A good impression of an idiot." I still was surprised by Anderson in that scene. Seeing Anderson's role in the mini episode was refreshing and welcome. What does everyone else think about it?

On a side note, I think Anderson looks best with the beard

I'm guessing that some evidence came to light that proved Moriarty really was a master criminal, and that Sherlock really was exactly what he claimed to be.  That made Anderson feel guilty for having played a part in Sherlock's" suicide.  So when he started seeing signs that Sherlock wasn't actually dead, that was a great relief to him.  Apparently he went kinda overboard with it, though, and lost his job.

Well, I thought it could be something like that. But still, it's quite a big turnaround for Anderson. Maybe when Sherlock returns, Anderson will hug him. I'd love to see Sherlock's reaction to that :D

(Oh, by the way: none of the people speaking German in that one scene with the jury actually has a German accent except for one woman who only says "not guilty". ;) )

I was watching this with headphones on and, when the foreman spoke, excitedly told my husband that they'd cast a native speaker for the role (one that even sounded like he could be from Hamburg) and how much I loved the show for it ... and that was when the jurors piped up :D.

Still, beautifully and amazingly done, and if they can pack so much into seven minutes, how much will the full episodes hold? I'm almost bouncing now in anticipation :).

Merry Christmas to all of you! :xmas:

Um... if that guy is a native speaker, then there's something seriously wrong with my hearing. And people from Hamburg sound different to me, too. But who cares. I just thought it was funny and rather charming. As for the jury members, it could even make sense if they were from all over the world, depending on the case (the Trepoff murder is only mentioned in one short sentence in "A Scandal in Bohemia" and there it's said to take place in Odessa).

I just love it when Sherlock semi-enthusiastically tries to act "normal". This video is even funnier than the scene in The Hounds of Baskerville where he walks into Henry Knight's house to get the sugar. I always crack up at "oh look, you've got damp".

If he had this hard a time just composing a simple "Happy Birthday" to one friend on video, I  really wonder how he's going to manage the wedding speech...

But I wonder if they ever explain why Anderson changed his mind about Sherlock. He hated him and now he's his fan?

I'm asking myself the same question and have no idea - interesting indeed!

Uh, sorry - I just realise I missed the second page of this discussion. Some ideas have already been posted re: Anderson being a "Sherlock fan" all of a sudden. My bad!

Oh, and - Happy Christmas to all of you! :)

I like him far better overall in this mini-episode, but I'm not sure how much of that is the beard and how much is that he's behaving in a more likable way.  In any case, the beard is fine with me, though (as Karie said) he might want to trim it more neatly once things settle down.

That's a good point about Anderson seeming pleased by Sherlock's apparent flattery.  His attitude toward Sherlock seems more defensive than generically hostile.

I've been wondering about that!  Sherlock is probably quite comfortable with their old relationship, and would hardly know how to react to a friendlier Anderson (hug or no hug).

Oh, thank goodness I'm not the only one who does that!  :D

I think I'll like the "new" Anderson a lot. He's still creepy, but in a different way. What more were they going to do with the character without changing him? He was pretty one-dimensional (albeit funny) in the two previous series.

It makes a lot of sense that he would have felt responsible for Sherlock's "suicide", whether the detective was known to have been genuine or not, and that this would have caused a big disruption in his life.

Nice bit of speculation, how Anderson will react when it turns out Sherlock wasn't dead, after all, and fooled everybody. He might be happy because he's been proven right and be relieved, too, but he could just as well be angry that he was made to feel guilty and ruined his career over a death that never happened.

I can't wait to see him do the wedding speech! :D

You're definitely not alone in that... Me neither. I wonder whether we'll get to see him rehearse the wedding speech and get an "uncut" version of that as well. Good thing that most people likely to attend John's wedding know him. And it might be a good idea if he got a second opinion on his wedding gift, if the birthday present mentioned in this clip is a typical sample of his particular brand of thoughtfulness.

True!  But in that case, he'd have to line up behind John!

Anderson seems fairly convinced that Sherlock is in fact alive, so I doubt he'll be anything but happy and/or smug when it's finally proven. When he said that bit about Sherlock coming home over the map, he sounded enthusiastic.

I can't believe how great 'Many Happy Returns' turned out. My favorite part of it is John's reaction to the video. Martin Freeman is just excellent at portraying emotions very subtly. The man hardly does anything; just pulls a few face muscles, and I get all emotional.

The video was excellent; so fitting for Sherlock, and I adored his wink at the end.

It was great to see Lestrade too. "He didn't solve all my cases!" :)

Very excited about January 5th!

Finally got around to watching it very late last night after a busy day with the family!! basically ditto everything that sherlockandjohn said, I love it, as usual for Sherlock it was cleverly done but with humour and emotion too. The perfect little treat for Christmas day that sets you up nicely for the start of the new series. Roll on New Year :)

Finally, it played without buffering and hitches!  What a switch for Anderson...now he's the only one who believes Sherlock is coming back and poor Lestrade thinks Anderson has gone around the bend....as probably everyone else does too.

I can see her dumping him alright. But why would he lose his job but not her? She was just as much a dupe to Moriarty as Anderson ever was, even more so in some ways.

From what I understood in the little Christmas episode, Anderson lost his job trying to prove Sherlock was alive, not because he was duped by Moriarty's "fairy tale". He probably got a little too enthusiastic about his theories and neglected his official duties, or something like that. Sally might have dealt with the whole situation after Sherlock's "death" very differently.

Sounded more like he wouldn't keep quiet and complained about the official police statement that Sherlock was the "bad guy". If he stood up for a more thorough investigation, he probably became an eyesore for his superiors. Lestrade's passive approach (keeping a low profile) and the fact that he still seems to be working for the police suggests that all of them were allowed to stay, more than likely not in their original position, however. Anderson must have done something differently, then, for it to result in a notice. So, I suggest he voiced his doubts. Probably repeatedly enough to be considered instable or a danger to the police image.

I'd love for him to hug Sherlock. Tha'd be hilarious.

Lestrade said, "...you lost a good job fantasising about a dead man coming back to life," so yes, it had something to do with Anderson disputing some part of the official story.  I agree, they probably thought he was "losing it" -- and judging by Lestrade's facial expression, he's worried that they're right.
