What about Sherlock's feelings for Molly?

Oh, oh!  So I wanna talk about Irene a moment, brought to you by my recent rewatching of SiB.  My first watching or two of SiB I just focused on the list of heartbroken things Sherlock was doing, and the heartbroken piece of the sentence and then I guess my brain just tuned out.

 

John says:

He’s writing sad music; doesn’t eat; barely talks – only to correct the television.  I’d say he was heartbroken but, er, well, he’s Sherlock. He does all that anyw...

 

I definitely don't disagree that Sherlock was attracted to Irene, intrigued by Irene yes, but I don't think he was madly in love with her.  John is definitely getting at Sherlock being upset over Irene's death in this conversation for sure, but I originally read a lot into the not eating, sad music, barely talking thing... but then John does point out... that's not all that different from Sherlock's normal behavior. ....

 

For me, just because that is normal Sherlock moody behavior doesn't preclude the idea that Irene's gotten to him.  Not eating and talking, I would chalk up to just normal Sherlock "something on his mind" behavior -- which, in this case, is Irene.  But they can't put that beautiful, haunting piece of music in there that Sherlock is composing and then expect me to believe he'd come up with that regardless of whether he had The Woman on his mind.  

 

I've never thought that we got to see Sherlock and Irene "in love."  They were too busy playing each other and using their mutual attraction for games.  But, by the time Sherlock is running off to Karachi to save her and keeping her phone, I definitely think there was some love involved among all of the head games.

I honestly have no idea what Sherlock feels for Molly.  Series 1 I saw nothing, didn't ship 'em, wasn't even on my radar.  Series 2, I only thought he apologized because of some influence of John softening his cold, grinch-like heart.  Even Reichenbach Fall, while saying that what he needs is "you" to Molly sounds a bit loaded with romantic undertones, within context I just saw it as him needing Molly's help.  And then I watched TEH, and started getting really, really confused.  And by the time we got to the end of Series 3, well I just don't even know what to do with them anymore. 

 

TEH - Clearly "THE kiss" is all Anderson's crazy imagination.  Nothing much to note when Sherlock first sees Molly in the locker room.  I did get a bit of a huh with how he was acting when he invited her over to "solve crimes."  It has a very date-like feel to it, and he seems nervous about asking her, which I don't really get.  The solving crimes part is pretty uneventful for me even, especially when he calls her John.... and then we get to train guy's house.  I dunno guys, but I have a hard time not reading all of those weird glances between Sherlock and Molly as something flirty.  I remember watching it as a previous non-shipper and thinking, "What is this?!?!"  After that, it all kinda falls apart into a big depressing mess for me.  You have that conversation at the bottom of the stairs and if anything he seems sad that he can't be what she would like him to be, or he can't feel the way for her that she feels for him so depressing yay... now you have Tom.  But why, why did the big dope have to go and kiss her on the cheek?  That was not sweet.  It just messed with her poor heart.  So clearly Molly is not over Sherlock. 

 

TSoT - Not much of note here other than I thought Molly was trying to make Sherlock jealous or something with the lot of sex talk.  Oh, and clearly Molly is done with meat-dagger Tom.  And Sherlock is kinda flirting with Janine, so my heart hurt for Molly.  Ugh.

 

HLV - Nothing much here even, other than I couldn't believe he let Molly slap him.  Oh, his little jab at her broken engagement kinda piqued my interest, but is probably meaningless.   I can't even get excited about Molly in the mind palace b/c Anderson is there.  Doesn't exactly shout romance to me.

 

So even though, outside of a few odd glances/looks in TEH, I don't see clear signs that makes me think they're going somewhere... I want to ask Moftiss, if you're not taking it somewhere then what are you doing Moftiss?  Huh?  What?  They could have easily married Molly off to a nice guy, or even Tom (yuck).  But I feel like they've left it all very open ended and weird between them.

Mmmm, that's the part I think is open-ended ... her last interaction with him was smacking him in the face. Then he pulls the Janine stunt, and kills someone .... I think there's a good chance Molly's pretty disillusioned right about now ....

That has never struck me as particularly flirty. More like they were both amused by the train guy, and kind of snickering at him behind his back. I suppose it could have been flirty if they'd already gotten to that stage of a relationship, but as it was, I saw it as more "friends sharing a moment."

I suspect what they meant is that Molly has realized Sherlock wouldn't be able to be the kind of boyfriend she needs in her life to make her happy. That does not mean she can't or won't still have a huge crush on him. Women fall for men like that all the time.

 

Funny that I, of all people, have absolutely no desire to see Molly and Sherlock end up together. Usually, that would be just my kind of love story, the good old Dary / Elizabeth or Mr Rochester / Jane thing. But I don't, not at all. Probably because, for me, Sherlock is neither a Dary nor a Rochester figure. Sure, he's British, handsome, rich (well, from a rich family) and haughty, but there the analogy ends, in my opinion.

 

Sherlock and Molly make great friends, but as a couple, I think they'd be disaster. Molly is just too nice a person. Sherlock would get bored with her, and treat her like dirt after a while - regretting that, of course, but then just doing it over and over again anyway.

 

Actually, I think Sherlock would be terrible as anybody's boyfriend. Just because of "the kind of man" he is, as Janine said. If he wants to dabble in love affairs, it's only fair if he picks women like Janine, or Irene Adler, who are thick-skinned enough to not care so very, very much about his (unintentional) abuse, and who have more than their share of the devil themselves, so the whole thing can play out as a contest of who screws the other over more effectively.

You know, I actually think Molly would destroy Sherlock.  Not on purpose, of course, but, while I really enjoyed the "solving crimes date" scenes, I don't want that dynamic for him in his daily life.  He needs to be able to be acerbic and smart-alecky and irreverent in order to do his job.  I think there is a carefulness that he has when he's with Molly that is endearing in small doses but not really good for him as a person.

 

And I agree with your PS.  Ladies, if you find a man to be emotionally stunted, it's not romantic to try to "fix" him, it's stupid.  Leave him for someone who wants his degree of emotional involvement, and find someone else who satisfies you.  Plenty of fish in the sea.
