Conclusion: The quiz is not a particularly valid test of what it purports to be measuring.

Wait.. are you dismissing the authenticity of my perfect score? :D

I tried to remember eyebrow shapes and the way the smiles are crooked, and shape of faces. They did try to be tricky with hair thing and mirroring.

Well to be honest, don't think I deserve it as well. I remember faces but many times I don't remember their associations. Worse, like couple of months ago when someone casually talked about a lot of stuffs in a new project, addressed me by name with recognition of my working style. All the time he was talking I failed to remember where was this familiar face from, but he continued talking about "just like what we did in ..... project." Then I knew. I only communicated with him probably twice and each last few minutes few years back and he was one of the many guys in the background for that project.

I have a knack to tell that someone is pregnant before others or before they announce it though. Not Mary. That was fake. :p

@B.C's picture: At first I thought it is figurine. Mistaken the yellow plastic looks plastic-ky (duh) like those looks in figurine, so are the gadget and stuffs on him. I know it's full size from the stuff in the room but there are lifesized figurines. :p

But the smile.. he...

I suppose it's the angle but it looks weirdly cute that he has 1:1 body-leg proportion.

Do you recognise this face?

It looks like someone photoshopped Benedict's head on a child's body.

American folks is AL the initials for Alabama?

Yes it is.

The A-states are tricky. Dunno about anyone else, but I often have to stop and think. Problem is, AL could logically be either Alabama or Alaska, AR could be Arizona or Arkansas, and AK could be Alaska or Arkansas. And the whole problem was compounded by the Canadian code for Alberta (AB). Guess they did the best they could.

M states aren't much better MA=Massachusetts could also be all of the rest but Missouri & Mississippi. ME=Maine would also work for Massachusetts and Minnesota. MI=Michigan works for all but Montana, Massachusetts, & Maryland. MO=Missouri (Minnesota & Montana). MS=Mississippi (Minnesota, Missouri, & Massachusetts). MT=Montana (Minnesota & Massachusetts). MN=Minnesota (Michigan, Massachusetts, Montana, Maine, Maryland). Thankfully Manitoba is MB and none of our M states have a B in the spelling.

I guess I'm like you.  A face will look familiar, but....

Like one time I was at a software conference, where I was one of maybe half a dozen women among large roomful of men.  In one popular session, I finally found an empty seat, and asked the fellow next to it if he was saving it for someone.  He said, "No, it's all yours, Carol."  I assumed he remembered my name simply because I was atypical there -- but it turned out we had been in college together twenty years earlier.  He even remembered that we had sat next to each other in one particular class.

Roundtable fishmarket and fish slapping??!? :D

I shouldn't miss those!

Thanks Toby, I'm not weary with confrontional situations though, at certain level, it fascinates me as observer. Just certain level. I just seem not able to find good time to get in, and would like to at least skim through last few pages to see what is current. I'm too slow and take too long to post anything, so mostly I just stuck outside and time's up. RL calling.

On other topic,

I remember some of you mentioned about having problem with face recognition. Try this for fun.

If You Ace This Quiz, You Definitely Don't Have Prosopagnosia

I'm okay with faces, terrible with names. Still it's surprising to get 10 score but I'll take it, :P although I don't want to be witness or detective.

Waow You are perfect!

to me:

You got 7 out of 10 correct

Your face memory is pretty good! With even just limited time to study faces, you're able to remember most of them either photographically or by remembering stand-out features. You probably do well at parties.

Now my next question: What was that even from(i.e. Role, Audition)?

It was from a film called The Dark Side of the Earth from 2008 that was never finished. Judging by the photos it's easy to see why.

I dare say that if the film had ever been finished, it might have been one of his more cheesy films just going on the looks.

Yup, our eyeballs had a lucky escape it would seem.

One of the mountains I drive past on the way to work was on fire today. We get fires in the summer sometimes, but it's quite rare this early in the year. Pretty distracting with smoke billowing across the motorway.

That sounds familiar from our years in California! Didn't realize any of the UK ever got that dry. Are you in/ near Snowdonia?

Nope, that's north I'm south. We get quite a lot of mountain fires in the summer, though not to the extent of the ones I've seen in other countries.

God, I was just hunting about on BBC news looking to see if there was anything about the fire, and came across a story about a kitten being dropped from the sky by a seagull. Wtf?!

Dare I ask about the kitten's current condition?

It survived, it's fine.

It's 17 degrees Celsius and I'm in the back garden 'sunbathing' because I'm determined to make the most of the tiniest bit of warmth. U.K. weather, 'tis a cruel mistress.

62 degrees (F) and you're sunbathing?  You're made of sturdy stuff!

While double checking that temperature conversion, I came across this handy tip:

double the Centigrade temp, subtract the first digit of the result from the result and add 32. It works pretty well; you’re usually right on but you’ll never be more than 1 degree Fahrenheit off.

For example, 23 C equals 74 F.
23 C x 2 = 46;
46 – 4 = 42;
42 + 32 = 74 F

... which yields a result of 63 for 17 C -- actually more accurate than what I posted above, since I rounded 62.8 down to 62.  Cool!

Wonder if there's a comparable method for F-to-C conversion?

Posted

Doing it in reverse should get close one would think. Just know that if the ones place is 5 or higher, you have to add 1 higher than the number in the tens place.

For example: 99F = 37C

99-32=67

67+7=74

74/2=37

Or

(99-32+7)/2=37

I can't figure out how to just link the video, but there's a cute little clip of the Study in Pink read through along with a few clips of the actual episode here.

If anyone knows how to link directly to the video let me know.

I couldn't even figure out how to play it at that link! I tracked it down, though ... I think it's from one of the DVDs. I'm another one who would love to see more of the read throughs.

As near as I can tell, you can only link to videos if they're on video sharing sites like YouTube and Dailymotion. Which this isn't.

The link works, have to click on the video to play it though. How I miss Study in Pink!

Anyho,

You guys have moments that when you think back make you wonder why you did something but then still repeat it next time?

I was in a meeting that involved quite a number of people from different fields and backgrounds, it's some kind of workshop where we had prolonged detailed discussions. The nature of putting people on this diverse format is already challenging, because everyone had their own goals from different POVs. To add to that slightly polite tense situation, there were disagreements with something.

So there I was, trying to make a point for my side. Got all ears and during my explanation, I made a remark about something, and suddenly, without warning, the whole room burst into roaring laughters, cracked at the same time, it was long lasting and everyone got into more relaxed mode.

The thing is I didn't intend to joke, yeah, I was dead serious when making a notorious remark, remark that apparently everyone had in mind but no one wanted to voice it, maybe because it's sensitive and nobody was sure what the impact would be if it's said. They laughed because they were surprised that I said it just like that, without much care to even sprinkle some sugar in it. Well, I didn't make it up, there was nothing I could do to make it sound better without blurring what I had to say.

Then, instead of taking a moment I ignored the suddenly happy room to finish making my point, not too long anyway. It worked, we reached agreement because the voldemort obstacle was recognized so we could work on the compromising solutions. The second and third day everyone was much more relaxed and cooperative, although one started to say , "please don't kill me, what if we do this ..."before saying his point to me. For a joke though, which I didn't mind of course, "I can't promise that, but let's hear it first..." :p

But think back, maybe I should have listened to what everyone said more because I heard a lot of interesting comments from them now that the tension had been lifted. Funny comments about how I said it, what I said and I side-heard a lot of exchanges about them agreeing and added remarks about their own similar takes. And I missed most part of that!

This happened before in other situations but I always didn't know how to stop to enjoy it. After all, I was making a point, maybe if I had stopped to enjoy, the momentum and strength of the point would be lost or reduced? Not sure.

Anyway :cowdance: three hell-ish people and noisy days are over, will need extreme introverting days tomorrow to recharge.

Oddly, no, I had to track it back two or three posts until I found the actual video, instead of just a picture of it. I've had that happen before. Might be a Windows 10 glitch.

Frankly if it was a meeting on how to vanquish Voldemort it should be taken seriously! I, for one, am sick of living in terror.

I know I can make one, but do we have a thread for funny and quirky videos that aren't Sherlock related?
