Yikes, the NHS is currently undergoing a massive cyber attack.  :o

Yesh, they just mentioned that on the news. They say Russia was hardest hit. Good. Taste of their own medicine. :p

I didn't know it was all the other countries as well, I only saw the headlines which were obv focused on ours.

Poor F-Secure, who were giving their analysis in a report I just read, every time I see F-Secure it just makes me think of F-Society from Mr Robot. Pretty much the last thing a cyber security firm wants to be associated with.

The news says it's hit 74 countries, but I don't know if they mean today, because they only mention 5-6 by name. But the UK is the worst because it hit hospitals, they say. In the other countries it targeted less critical services.

I think I hate hackers more than just about anyone else I can think of. Scum.

Hacking is just vandalism with internet access. They either don't know how to create something, or else they're too lazy -- so instead they destroy what others have created.

Well, they create good malware. My workplace has been hit by Osiris ransomware recently. Fortunately, my team works on Macs, and only Microsoft* files on our server were affected. Still it gave us an unexpected early leave. :D

The bug though, had to be activated by opening an email attachment, the new one don't even need this, which is scary.

* I almost wrote Mycrosoft.

I've had a couple of emails actually open themselves and try to install Trojans recently, but luckily my antivirus caught it. I hadn't even clicked on them!

Osiris would feel insulted

One think I like about Microsoft Outlook on my computer is the ability to preview a message without opening it. It reduces the viruses as suspicious emails can be deleted first.

Do y'all use a web-based email service (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)? Alex and I are still using our former ISP for email (and in a pinch, we can still use their dial-up service). Knock on wood, but they've been doing a really good job of filtering out viruses -- they'll tell us "you got this email, and we're saving it on our server for you, but we really, really don't think you should open it; however if you're an idiot, just click here -- but don't say we didn't warn you!" I never argue with their judgment.

They've gotten pretty good at filtering out blatant spam, too -- they let one through maybe once every few weeks now.

I use Gmail for my emails and Mail (the Apple version of Outlook) for work email. I'd just stick to Gmail if I could.

Which email service was it that would have allowed those messages to open themselves?

Mail. I have no idea how they did it.

Wow -- I thought Apples were supposed to be virtually virus-proof!

Posted

They used to be but since they are so popular these days that's changed.

Posted

It wasn't so much that Apples were virus-proof it's more like viruses were written for Windows computers with the occasional Mac one tossed in until the iPhones came out. Then viruses for Apple products started being written more without slowing down the number of viruses for Windows.

Right, I was aware it was basically a numbers game. Hadn't stopped to think about all those iPhones.

Is... is this Sherlock's previous neighbor?
