Series 4 News

Just noticed that one of our PBS stations will be broadcasting all three episodes of S4 in a row, tonight. So those of you in the States might want to check your schedules and see if your PBS station is doing likewise.

I caught most of the broadcasts of T6T, but the other two I've only seen mostly on my little bitty laptop screen ... so maybe you all can guess what I'll be doing tonite!

Laterz.

Over at Sherlockshome.net, there is an article about a special coming January 1 2018, from a Russian channel, and they are notorious for spilling the beans. It would chime with the fact that some promo scenes were never shown in this series, and I wouldn't put it past either creator to mess with our heads and then spring a surprise extra on us! Fingers crossed!

It's possible, of course, in the sense that it's not impossible. But filming took about the same length of time as usual, and it seems like there are always some promo shots that don't make it into the finished product (e.g., the famous S3 shot of John in a cafe with Sherlock looking in through the window). So I wouldn't give that claim too much credence.

Yes, it does sound like those rumors of a "secret special," doesn't it?  Only isn't that supposedly scheduled for March 8?

Not a surprise, but Mark and Sue believe that there could be a fifth series:

Okay... If they'll revisit the series, I would actually prefer it to be after quite some time, in universe and out. It would have to be quite a different show, I think, but of course it could still be very good. Maybe even better after a suitable break for everyone involved.

“It’s about getting everybody back together, which is extremely difficult now, and also coming up with the right idea, after such a tumultuous fourth season."

Leaving open, once again, the question of: what happened to the season five they said they had plotted out?  I don't think any hole in any plot drives me half as crazy as that does...

I wonder if maybe they used some points (like Eurus) that they had planned for 5 but left some out just in case?

I agree.  I think the plotted-out S5 was rolled into S4, and that's why we get the feeling that some things were rushed or that there were leaps that some people would have preferred not to have to fill in for themselves in head canon.

Personally, I think BC's career will cool down sooner rather than later, and MF usually seems to have a fairly good grip on his schedule in general. So, just give it a bit of time for everyone to settle a bit, and they can come back.

I don't know whether it will actually cool down, but I'm a bit hopeful that with a young family in England he might want to take more British based roles which would be good for us. And he seems to actually like doing TV, which is wonderful. It annoys me when actors who build their careers in TV abandon it, especially when a lot of the best parts are on TV these days.

I've thought the same thing ... they collapsed the ideas for two seasons into one. But I'd wish they'd say so, because it makes me nutz! Why I'm so stuck on it, I don't know...

I'd say BC's career depends on how successful these upcoming projects are. I suppose we could do our part to keep him at home by refusing to watch anything he's in ....

Wasn't a lot of Dr. Strange filmed in England? So we'd have to get up and leave only for the New York scenes, but could go back for the studio stuff... :p

I agree on the impression that the series 4 we got was probably a combination of plans they originally had for two series. Wonder what we missed... Sigh.

Like I said, if they come back, let it be as older men after a long break and then we can get a modern take on the later Holmes who in many ways is a different person from the one we meet in A Study in Scarlett. That would be okay, I guess. Still, I would probably wait until I know there's a proper ending again or I might not want to watch it. I am really happy now with the story largely complete.

If they wait like 5 or 10 years to have series 5 just to pretend that series 4 didn't happen or not an extension of season 4, I think that would annoy me more because season 4 wasn't a natural end despite Moftiss claiming it was.

But there can never be an ending -- Holmes and Watson are immortal, remember?

True. A satisfying final chapter, then. No Holmes going off to live as a recluse with bees and no Watson going back to war.

In fact, it would be really nice if they ended every future installment on a similar note as the last one, maybe turning the shot of them running out of Rathbone Place into something of a running gag.

Or end every episode with case solved, back to Baker Street -- and the doorbell rings.  Cue theme music.

As to anyone's career cooling down, it's hardly likely. Fox are going for The Man in the Rockefeller Suit, and Marvel is definitely on a roll, and this is a Batman fan saying it! For older Holmes and Watson, Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone will have to suffice for the foreseeable future.

Not surprising, but Andrew Scott says that Series 5 is at least two years away:

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2017-06-07/any-new-sherlock-is-at-least-a-couple-of-years-away-says-andrew-scott

My guess is that Series 5 filming will commence in 2019 or 2020.

If I still see my eyes, I watch.

There was a link to another article on that site where they claimed Gatiss had said that there was originally some dialog planned for after the final montage. I wonder what it was!
