Doesnt doggy have a bandage on one paw, though? I think either military or police K-9 team.

Military, yep. When your partner is wounded, you stay with your partner.

(don't worry, dog made a full recovery afaik, or I wouldn't post it ;))

Don't think a hospital would choose a German Shepherd as a comfort dog. They shed like nobody's business.

OK, I see that Pets as Therapy (in the UK) provides both dogs and cats. And there are some therapy cats in the US as well. Good!

A friend of ours was drowsily just starting to wake up in her second-story apartment, enjoying the breeze coming in the open window and the rustle of tree leaves just outside and the furry feel of her cat nestling against her leg.

As she came slightly more awake, she thought "Cat? I don't have a cat anymore." So she looked down at her leg area, and she and the squirrel each did a huge double take before the critter fled.

Except in apartments in that town, apparently.  When I lived there, I once found a kitten who'd gotten out of a second-story apartment because they'd left the window open for fresh air.  I suggested they get one of those adjustable screens that you put into the window opening and then close the sash down on it to keep it in place.

Must be a bug free city. You leave a screen open for 5 minutes here and the entire insect kingdom moves in. Not to mention snakes, mice, bats, lizards ... tell me again why I live in the country?

Sounds about right for anywhere in the US except maybe parts of Alaska where you just have to watch out for the arctic creatures which tend to be pet size or larger.

I strongly suspect that there were no window screens in those apartments, not because the landlords thought there were no bugs in town.  Rather because they'd cost extra and be a bit of a pain to maintain, but apartment hunters would not be willing to pay higher rent for them.  Also, they merely protect the tenants, not the building.  So you're not likely to find them in the low-rent district.

This weekend there is a vegan festival at Berlin Alexanderplatz. My friend Julia is making amazing artworks and food illustration. Each day this weekend she is giving away a painting she is doing live over the day for a good cause in an auction in the evening. The paintings are mostly very cute animals, have a look:

this is her 'talking animals' tumblr:

fun fact: Her last name is very close to the german version of Bilbo's last name. (in german Bilbo´s name is 'Bilbo Beutlin' ; Beutel = Bag  ) It's her real name, btw. ;), so no intended association with the Hobbit, haha...but it's cute, isn't it?

If anyone of you guys is currently in Berlin, come by and say Hi, I will also be at her stand helping out a bit in the afternoon.
