Today I had the cutest earrings in my mail. I thought my earring-holes in my earlobes had closed, but actually they are still open even after several years! Thought I'd need to go to a piercer first to have them reopened...Now I have bunnys hopping through my earlobes!

Thought it would fit in this thread as it's just cuuuute, and it's bunnys. :D

Quack-quack!

And speaking of waterfowl, I stumbled across this story earlier today:  A goose approached a Cincinnati police car and pecked at the door until the officers followed her.  Turns out one of her babies had gotten tangled up in some string in the garbage along a riverbank.  Normally, adult geese will viciously attack anyone who comes near their offspring, but this goose allowed one of the officers to pick up the gosling and free it.  (There's supposedly a video at that link, but I haven't been able to get it to play properly, nor can I seem to copy any of the photos -- so you'll just have to follow that link for yourselves.)

Animals can do amazing things when it comes to the lives and safety of their offspring (or, sometimes, not even theirs - read this story at your own risk  ). Even the little bird brains - once I was out riding in the woods and came across a small bird which I suddenly noticed because it was moving away from my horse, slowly and on the ground, dragging one wing behind. My heart going out to the poor critter, I dismounted to see if I could pick it up (there was a vet close to the stables), but it seemed understandably scared and was just this tiny bit too quick for me. So I followed it, leading my horse behind me, for a bit - and suddenly it made a miracle recovery and flew away. Only then did I realize that there had been nothing wrong with its wing and most likely I had inadvertedly ridden too close to its nest, prompting it to try and lure me away from its young by appearing vulnerable. ;)

The American birds called killdeers (very similar to the European ringed plovers) are famous for doing exactly the same thing.  (It's how we know when they're nesting by our driveway again.)

Was this posted here already? I thought so, but I can't find it so here you go ... police officers rescuing ducklings. I won't say Mama Duck asked them for help, but she does sort of seem to understand they meant her well.

Love that mama duck... why does she have so many kids/chicks/ducklings? It's a handful...Where is the husband/spouse! Male chauvinistic duck...

About heroic animals.. I read lately, fresh in the news, wait. Here:

Humpback hero

Altruistic Humpback Whales?

Although it's not conclusive, there are a lot of recorded incidents that humpback whales are protecting weaker marine species from Orca's attacks. They put extra effort to guard the animals for hours and travel a distance for the rescues.

Some motivation could be 'revenge', 'warning' to reduce future attacks by displaying their strength but altruistic behavior is not ruled out based on the many records.
