So you could ask if Molly is a surgeon, or did they just screw up? ;)

If that's the name of the game, I might as well ask them why Sherlock needed a corpse in order to fake his suicide, and why he couldn't just have lain down on the pavement immediately. ;)

Go right ahead - I'd love good answers to both questions!

Is it very irrational of me that I am nervous about this convention, and I'm not even going? The thing is, I can just see the media spreading ridiculous stories about how silly, immature, sex-fantasy-obsessed etc the Sherlock fans are... the only thing worse would be if those stories did not even have to be made up...

There is a lot of hype going on in the media and among the fans, but fortunately the focus of the convention was on the show - not on fanfiction, which is where I think most of the sex fantasies etc. come in. Even the questions for Cumberbatch were decent - except maybe one, which was: "I know you don't ship Johnlock, but do you ship anyone else on the show?" That question deals with people's fantasies, and I'm glad Benedict dodged it nicely. There was only one question of a personal nature, as to how he felt about becoming a dad. I think it's a bit ridiculous - of course he's excited about it, and what else is he going to say? But the answer was quite funny. He was asked to rate it on a scale from 1 to 10; 1 being like a picnic in the park, and 10 being getting eaten by a shark. BC answered that it was a bit of both... Having picnic in the park with a shark.

I am way behind in following up on the convention... Haven't seen any pictures, film clips or read anything. Got too many things to do these days. Anyway, the convention was fun and exciting, especially the panel talks. Really enjoyed those. Would have liked a better seat, though ;)

Meeting the actors during photo shoots was actually not that big a deal, as it's done really quickly, but it's still quite nice to have the photos as souvenir.

If I had the opportunity another time, I might go, but I would be more selective about how to spend my money. The photo shoots are not that big a deal for me - I'd go to as many of the talks as possible instead.

Oh, and on the Friday, I met up with J.P. and went sightseeing, which I loved. Was really neat to see Bart's and North Gower Street, in particular.

I love it!  No matter how well I am aware -- intellectually -- that Londoners drive on the left, my instincts are resolutely backwards every time I cross a street.  And presumably I'm not the only one, considering that most of the world drives on the right.  They probably got tired of scraping dead tourists off the street!

The funny thing is - even if the traffic is left-sided, there is no such a tendency on the pavements. On the moving staircases you are expected to stay right, while the left side is for those in hurry. Which is - in my eyes - a right sided traffic. I have seen ONCE a normal stairs with the UP and DOWN directories on them (left sided), the rest seem to be random. Actually it would help the crowds to move more efficient if all would just stick to one solution. ;)

Can you imagine the number of traffic accidents in Britain if they changed to right side driving, though? I shudder to think!

Posted

I thought it was odd as well that they drove left sided and walked right sided. And I was the odd person that around that time I was checking traffic reverse here in the US before crossing the street (right, left, right) and then when I got to London I automatically flipped it.

I know, but - the pedestrians could also move on the left.

And - still there are people able to travel to other-side-traffic countries, switch the sides and don't get killed.

The problem with switching the sides of traffic is IMO more about technical changes which would have to be made. Including exchanging all cars. :D

It's possible to drive a left-side car on the right side of the road, and vice versa.  The first time I was in London, I remember hearing radio spots reminding people that if they were going to take their cars to mainland Europe on vacation, they needed to get their headlights realigned for right-side driving.  I think the main problem (other than the drivers) in changing a whole country to driving on the other side would be switching all the signs -- I suppose you'd need to put up duplicates with covers over them, facing the new way, then overnight cover the old signs and uncover the new ones.  And I suspect that some street intersections could be a bear to switch.  But mostly it'd be getting all the drivers to switch at once.  That sort of thing would need a really good reason!

I think the main reason why the British Isles can differ from most places is that they are islands.  There are no borders where drivers have to switch sides.  Other left-side places often have strong British influence AND limited land borders (here's a map).  For example, Japan (which has modeled itself on Britain) is also on islands.  India and Pakistan have their borders in sparsely-populated mountainous regions.  Australia is an island.  Just British influence isn't enough: Canada has a 3,000-mile border with the US, through heavily-populated areas.

Last time we were in the UK, I kept trying to figure out which side pedestrians walked on, but never succeeded.  But I'm not so sure that American really have a specific side, either.

I was in Thailand a little over a month after I was in London and even though that country was never under any European control, they drive on the left.

Yes, it is possible to drive a wrong-side car, but the position of the driver has a reason, and it is safety. Like while starting from the roadside or overhauling other vehicles you see NOTHING if you sit on the wrong side.

Oh my... must follow the Gatiss Guild later.  That's like Gatiss heaven for me.  lol  I would love to meet him; he seems like a riot.

I know we had a discussion somewhere on here about the heights of various cast members, but this pic makes Gatiss look a good bit taller.  Although, it could just be a fluke.

that must have been a longer line... This was for the talk.

Longer?!  Than that?!  This is making me reconsider my hypothetical convention attending.

I don't know what it is, but it is definitely not a picture of the Convention. The hall wasn't that empty. And it wasn't room S7 but S5 (and probably S6). Maybe it is the day the volunteers applicated for the job at Sherlocked.

Edited: ignore me. See the posts below.

Wait, so what is that a picture of then?    I'm getting confused.

I just want to go to talks and stalk Gatiss and Loo... not asking too much...

the line for the talk!

also: the crew did not check our tickets all 3 times.... I mean I could just walk in anywhere

But J.P. said the hall wasn't that empty.  You took the pic then?   The line is wrapping all the way around the room, yes?  How long were you in line?

Sarina, you mean the cues were in another room? Now - that makes sense. I just didn't have to cue and used the doors from the main room.

Exactly!

Oh, sorry for confusion. So they had to rent one more hall. That must have been price'y...

You know what? Now I'm even happier that I haven't to go through that. I even could take the freedom of coming too late evilgrin.gif

So how much do I have to pay to NOT stand in lines like that?  lol
