Here are the cherries again... Hey, this outfit I'd really wear, I see nothing wrong with it whatever:

Yeah, it's not as if everything is just so and it's not terribly tight-fitting, but to me, she looks nice. Nice and pretty, and well, normal - like a woman you could really meet on the bus. Not like a TV character.

Same here:

And in Molly's case, add "correctly buttoned."  ;)

OMG, she misbuttons them? I never noticed that (I miss so much when I watch! :( ) Poor Molly, so unselfconscious that she's self-conscious about it.

I was talking about this sort of thing:

I agree there's nothing bizarre about the way she dresses. She seems more practical than consciously stylish -- which is certainly fine by me, because I see very little point in "style" per se. But the way she fastens just a button or two makes her look to me like she's very absent-minded about her clothing.

 Well, that scene was from where she was just off to take her lunch break - she probably threw her coat off and her cardigan on and then rushed off. Poor thing might not have that much time to relax. And then Sherlock comes along and steals more of it...

I really like Molly's clothes, because while they are certainly pretty (well, to me) and feminine enough, they don't scream sex. Someone said something above about "dress for success". Okay, compare Molly dressed for work:

With Janine dressed for work:

Sorry, but if I came into both rooms, my first impression of Molly would be, oh, a professional, and my first impression of Janine would be yikes, she looks as if she'd be just the type to let her crazy boyfriends into my office while I'm not looking.

Okay, but in this scene, compare Molly to Sherlock. Molly's ordinary, and that's fine if that's what she wants, but what she really WANTS is Sherlock; and appearance-wise, he's way out of her league. And I think that's what people are responding to; if she wants to play in Sherlock's league, she could start by paying more attention to her appearance. Of course, then she wouldn't be our Molly, and we wouldn't love her as much, because she'd be faking it, and really, the clothes and hairdo shouldn't matter. Except, of course, they really, really do -- when you're trying to impress people who THINK they matter. Sherlock bases much of what he knows about people by deducing their appearance; what does her appearance tell him about her?

I know what it tells me; she's down to earth but with a touch of whimsy, insensitive to color balance, insecure about her body, and someone I would instantly feel comfortable with. Virtually the opposite of Sherlock, who would scare me half to death.

I go round and round with stuff like this, because I don't believe appearances should matter; but I know they DO, because so many people believe they do. And if you want to get along in the world, you're going to encounter those people. But the other side of me says "Ah, f--- them!" :D

And really, stripes with checks? Even I know better! XD

But on the other hand, Sherlock is the last man on earth to be fooled by a fancy set of clothing. He doesn't just look at people, he sees through them. For example, when Molly puts on lipstick, he does notice, he even notices that it's an improvement, but he also realizes why she put it on, and that does not make him one bit more interested in her.

Yeah, I don't think Sherlock is physically interested in Molly at all. He probably doesn't even think of her as pretty. And he's such a vain sod, if he really did get himself a girlfriend, I bet she'd be in the Irene Adler league, looks-wise, at least. But he is very well able to see beyond her workaday clothes and her "thin lips and small breasts", to her pretty impressive personality, tidy brain and just plain good heart. I mean, whom did he go to when John wasn't "in the picture" - some flashy "tabloid whore" or good old frumpy Miss Molly Hooper?

I don't think any measures, appearance-wise, would make Sherlock see Molly differently by the time series 3 comes around. He knows her well enough. And she is in his league - not looks- or style-wise, but she's one of his few friends. And I do not think that the only reason she's not his girlfriend is her clothing. If he wanted to go out with her, and minded the way she looked, he'd just tell her what to wear - probably in the rudest, most insulting manner possible.

I think they are both wearing clothing suited to their profession! A woman who wore Molly's clothes to the interview for Janine's job would not get the position; PA's, especially in that kind of environment, are expected to be fashionably dressed. (Unfairly, the reverse isn't necessarily true, however.)

It's not Molly's style of work clothes, but the fact that they don't fit her well. Her "party" clothes fit fine, I think she looks nice in them. (Not sure about those hair doodads, tho!)

Janine, however, turns heads. Not fair (imo, Molly's got a better body shape) but Janine knows how to show off what she's got to her advantage, and she projects confidence. And that's what matters to an awful lot of people. It just depends on the people you want to attract. Molly wants to attract Sherlock.

Now that he knows her better, appearance won't matter as much, though. So there's that.

... and I'm sure a boss like Magnussen requests that amount of cleavage... :P

Seriously though, and I know we're getting off topic, but still: Why oh why does "stylish" for women automatically mean "sexy"? High-end, fashionable clothes for men aren't designed to make them look suggestive. So why us?

Oops, didn't see your other post til after I'd posted mine. Agree with everything you say about Sherlock. But the original question was, I believe, why do some viewers of the show "disapprove" of Molly's appearance? And the standard wisdom is, what you wear says a lot about you. The deeper wisdom is, of course, it doesn't say everything about you, or perhaps even anything particularly meaningful about you. But study after study have shown how humans are deeply influenced by first impressions -- so yeah, I see why people might think Molly's just making it harder on herself by dressing the way she does. She makes it easy for people to overlook her. (A blessing, in Moriarty's case!) And I think Sherlock definitely overlooked her until she made him realize she's not merely what she appears to be. Kudos to him for overcoming first impressions; kudos to her for perservering in the face of his indifference. I still don't expect them to end up together, though, for a thousand thousand reasons.

Heck, he probably picked out that dress for her!

Ohhhh, I'm going to have to disagree with you there!!!! I look at pix of Mr. Cumberbatch in his everyday clothes, and I go "Hm, he looks nice." I look at pix of him in those highly tailored, fashionable suits, and my eyes fall out of my head. Men's clothes are just suggestive in different ways, is all. Cuz, y'know, boys and girls are arranged differently. :P

As to why "stylish" so often seems to mean "sexy" -- darned if I know. Tiresome, isn't it?

I haven't bought anything because Sherlock (or any other character) wore it. But Sherlock had some effect on my taste in furniture and decoration. I'm currently attrected to items of which if think "that could be part of 221b!". Just today I bought a plate with vintage Christmas decor that I could totally see sitting on a table in 221b, and I'm so looking forward to the pre-Christmas season when I can put it on one of my oldfashioned chests of drawers ^_^

Oh, and I'm having an eye on the Union Jack cushion that John has on his armchair. But currently I consider it overpriced.

Yes, I finally bought a 6' dark blue scarf.

Haven't actually had occasion to use it yet as California temps don't quite warrant a wool scarf, but I will definitely use the European knot!

Now to find a cosplay coat as a true Belstaff coat (not sure they are in production any more) is entirely out of my price range.

The last thing I remember hearing/reading from Moftiss/Vertue is that the true Belstaff was no longer being made.  May you find a good reasonable replica.

I've seen some good ones out of China on Ebay.  Then again, China is crazy for "Curly Fu and Peanut."  LOL

I don't think I've confessed this yet, but I did finally buy Irene's Louboutins.  Or, at least, the 3" heel ones -- the ones she wears I think are 4.5"  I barely have 4.5 inches of foot, let alone wear a heel that size.

Ouch!   Though if you're used to wearing that sort of thing -- how do you like them?

That is awesome! Although I'd have to remove the gun. :)
