My cover is blown. My guy had been recognized.

 People keep informing me about anything Benedict Cumberbatch allegedly says or does too. They don't get that I am primarily a Sherlock fan, not a BC fan. I highly respect the guy, I think he's a very good actor and a handsome, charming man, but I don't go crazy over him or feel the need to see anything he's ever acted in...

Me too actually, but now I am starting to doubt myself, although not to the point I am curious enough to dig his other works, other than the upcoming ones.

I find he is more interesting when he is older, yet still playful, and when he blends to the crowd of fans. I don't forget his Santa letter, and I guess only kind person can inspire kind deeds done to his name. Hopefully all those are genuine.

Oh, but some of his older works are gems.

I joke with my friends that I have a crush on BC, because it's what I think they will understand. But what I really have a crush on is his acting; I find him mesmerizing to watch. That, and the goofy side of his personality. Oh, and the philanthropy. And his generosity with his fans. And The Voice. And the curls. And the eyes .... okay, never mind.

Exactly. Only with me, it's Martin Freeman. (And I really *do* have crushes on John Watson and Bilbo Bagging.)

Whereas with Sherlock, I want to whump him up side the head and tell him to behave. And then hug him.

Sure!  Though apparently the name and the decor are about as far as the theme goes.  Too bad they don't have a truly hobbitish menu!

I thought the punch me in the face was John piggybacking Sherlock.

Anyway those are cute.

Sorry can you repeat those? I didn't hear you the first time. :p

Not on topic, but now I wonder about the etymology of 'crush'. Is it because it's pessimistic, some thing that meant to be failed, unrequited feeling? :o

What, no herbs ands stewed rabbit? Surely they must have mushrooms?

Good question. One I couldn't find a satisfactory answer to. I've always thought of it in terms of wanting to hug (squeeze, crush) the object of your desire, but that's just me.

Sorry, the stewed rabbit aux fines herbes is on the menu at the Sam Gamgee.  ;)

The Baggins does offer three dishes containing mushrooms, but I seriously doubt that any of them would satisfy a hobbit's craving.  They don't seem to have seed cake on the menu, either.  They apparently have a good assortment of beers, however, which may be the origin of the hobbit connection.

I do like their cheese assortment, especially the fact that they tell what species the milk came from.  I'm allergic to cows, and usually have to send the server into the kitchen to ask -- only to be told, more often than not, that everything they have is made from cow milk.

Yeah, damn good question.  It's apparently a pretty old meaning of the word, though, dating back to 1900, give or take a dozen years (depending on your source).  Maybe it has to do with the overwhelming feeling one has, especially the sense that it's hard to breathe, as though one's chest were being crushed?  Though probably none of the above -- the usual form is to have a crush ON somebody, which doesn't really fit with any of our guesses.  It behaves more like such expressions as to have an eye on somebody, or to have dibs on somebody.

A number of odd expressions come from old forgotten jokes or songs.  Maybe this is one of those vestigial remains.

I believe you can get seed cake at the Wild Bird Store, though. :p

Oh how I wish I could! Although I'd probably never let them mature, I'd eat them as soon as they started budding.

When I was little we had an apricot tree in the back yard. We never got a ripe apricot off it because us kids liked to eat them even while still green. (I think it was the novelty of being able to eat something directly off a tree, not the flavor so much. :d ) (To this day, though, apricots are my favorite fruit. I'm still shocked to discover how many people have never tasted one.)

Not even dried ones?  That seems really odd to me.  I've rarely had fresh ones except when we lived in California (there was a family that sold the best apricots ever at the Ventura farmer's market), but I've had dried ones all my life.  Not as often as prunes, I guess, but often enough.

Regarding Bilbo's seed cake -- I looked it up a few years back, and it turns out to be an old-fashioned British thing (of course), basically a pound cake flavored with caraway seeds (and sometimes spices, though I suspect that's a later adaptation).

When I buy apricots in the grocery store, the clerks and other people in line frequently ask what they are.

I suspect it's the price ... out here, at least, they're pretty high for what you get. Whereas you can get 3 times as big peaches for practically nothing (in season, of course.) I love artichoke, too, but it's almost impossible to find a decent one on the east coast, and when you do, it's not unusual for them to be $4 each. That's what I get for being a transplanted Californian, I guess.

It's hard to get good apricots here in Indiana.  They tend to be kinda green.  I've finally gotten the hang of ripening plums in my kitchen, though, so maybe that would work reasonably well for apricots also?  But the ones we could get in California were pure ambrosia!

Are we far enough off topic yet?

Nope, the thread hasn't been :hijacked: enough yet. ;)

Maybe they'll add some random discussion about fruit into the next series of Sherlock that Sherlock tunes out and we hear the tail end of it and one of Sherlock's snarky comments about that conversation. (There, kinda back on topic.)

Well, back to the obsessions.... yes, I'm still adding charms to my bracelet/cuff.  Just added a nurse's cap, syringe, royal flush, Sydney Opera House, perfume bottle, science beaker.  I'm waiting on the arrival of a sweetie and a tea bag, and I just found brains.  Hope to get the dressing gown this month.  The nurse's cap is the only S4-related one I know of for sure, but once the series airs, I will find others.  The cuff has slots for 96 charms, and I will be starting to double up this month.  Either that or start a 2nd cuff.
