Well Ben is basically young enough to sort of be like a son for me... because I'm just old enough for that which is sort of frightening because I still think of myself as being eternally about 25 at heart, but then my parents are older than his (and still living).

Welcome to *ahem* the Mature Years. I think what a lot of people fail to realize is that there's nothing inherently unnatural about being attracted to someone who's a generation younger. The reason that it seems weird to young adults is that people a generation younger then are just kids -- so yeah, it really is weird. But a few years later, when people a generation younger are actual adults -- well then, adults are adults.

(What's that quote?  "Terror is waking up and realizing your high school graduating class is running the country?")

Or, "Class reunions are where you go to see people who used to be the same age as you."

Well, I'm still hooked on Sherlock.  Don't know when that will end.  Maybe never?  I even watched bits of TSOT and HLV yesterday.  Seems like I'm constantly referencing something.  Plus I think if you're writing any fan fiction, then you stay intimately close to the episodes.

And then there are the things that the fandom seems to find when you have the ability to freeze frame and play it frame by frame (I can't do that) and someone points out something you just never would see... like when in TSOT Molly is kissing on Tom for the photographer and it turns out that Sherlock is in the background between them... as if she's kissing so publicly on Tom to make Sherlock jealous.

Me too.  And I hope it never ends.  I've only ever gotten attached to two shows/franchises before this:  Star Trek and Star Wars.  The day I first watched HLV, I knew this was one of those shows that I would learn backward and forward and fantasize about and use to think about when I'm having a boring day.  I really treasure having something like this that kind of transcends "entertainment' and moves into "fascination," especially because I don't form those sorts of attachments to television/movies very easily.

Hah. I never noticed that until recently and it was only because I saw it mentioned on Tumblr.

I didn't know Molly could be so juvenile! :P

I can't believe anyone even found Sherlock way back there in the scene.  Like I had to really look for him even after I was told he was there.

(trying to find a photo to post but no luck so far)

I do wonder how much of that was just coincidence, though.

Oh!  Found them!

Also, looks like that's Janine back there by Sherlock?

There is literally a pic where he's right between them.

Oh, really?  At the wedding?  Don't think I've seen that.

We all do silly things.

They do, don't they?

I love that Sherlock used the word "they."  Like he's excluding Molly from that.

Yes, there is one... but alas, I didn't pull it when I saw it.  I'm sure one of the #sherlolly folks has it...

There is this one I found by googling

Sherlock is just barely visible under Molly's chin.  Is this it or close to it?

So...they're saying Sherlock comes between Tom and Molly? ;)

Always.

Also want to say that another thing that keeps me hooked/addicted is the constant need to go back and reference something... Right now I'm trying to remember some little eye rolling thing Sherlock did.  Okay, he does it a few times, but there's one in particular I'm trying to find.  These are the kinds of things that keep me hooked/addicted.

Do you remember what else happens around the time of Sherlock's eye rolling in question?

Posted

No.  Well, barely.  Just know that the eye rolling was a little pffft of a sigh that was like "oh dear Lord" - and no, it's not from the Christmas scene in ASIB.  It was a direct response to someone saying something.

One of the elements that keep me hooked is, as John said, "with Sherlock, it's always the unexpected".

I love how Sherlock continually runs contrary to people's expectations, characters and audience. John wants him to be a hero. Molly would like him as a lover, as would Janine. Lestrade wants him to grow up and be a reliable consultant who works well with the police - and a good man. Mrs Hudson wants him to be her surrogate son - preferably as John's lover, because then she'd have two surrogate sons. Mary treats him like a child prodigy and expects him to be intimidated by her wielding a gun and telling him to keep his mouth shut. And Mycroft, it seems, wants Sherlock to be a (lesser) version of himself.

We the audience have even more wishes and expectations. And he fulfills none of them. Sherlock is always just exactly himself, and while he might not be quite sure what that means at times, he seems adamant about not conforming to any given idea of him. He's certainly not a real sociopath, but whenever we're lead to believe he's softening and becoming a regular human being, he does something outrageous like fake suicide at his best friend or shoot a villain in the face.

I never dreamed I'd see him deliver a best man's speech, let alone a good one. I never expected him to be downright enthusiastic about wedding preparations. But he was. And then he went and messed everything up again by getting so distracted with the case that he started babbling embarrassing nonsense at the assembled guests and pissing everyone off.

With Sherlock, you never know what happens next and you can never be quite sure what he's thinking, let alone feeling, but he still seems absolutely real. His character doesn't come across as contradictory so much as complex and intriguing.

There's just one thing I'm certain about: I want to see more of him. Because I think whatever he'll get up to, he'll make me approve somehow. He's just a joy to watch.

Another element that helps to keep me hooked is how the series is never entirely serious, nor entirely funny. It's such a delightful blend of humor and melancholy, playfulness and profundity. Just like in real life, I sometimes don't know whether to laugh or cry, and end up doing sort of both.

One of the things that keeps me coming back is how Sherlock displays an entire range of a human being.  Childish, narcissistic, impudent, prankster, brilliant, obnoxious, rude, snarky, self-centered, impatient, tender, vulnerable, adventurous, imperfect, self-sacrificing. murderous... and my favorite: commander in chief (when he tells John and Mary "Baker Street.  Now." and they obediently follow his lead when either of them could have said "Sod off." - and then he authoritatively runs that show to keep his troops in line)

Well, I'm sure I missed a few adverbs...

Main reason is the ever delightful interaction between the Holmes brothers

All of the crazy speculations on the interweb whether they are remotely plausible or way out in left field. And all of the cool fan art even if I don't ship the pairing.

One of the things that keeps me addicted is the extra-curricular humor that people make up to photos from the series.  I have had some serious laughs over them.
