A third sibling could be a very interesting idea if done well, I'd prefer to see an older brother than a younger one. A lot of the speculation that I have seen on Twitter have been of the 'third Holmes brother' being younger than Sherlock and being played by Tom Hiddleston. Personally, if there were a third Holmes brother I'd love him to be older than Mycroft and significantly older than Sherlock. And qho do I think one be the ideal actor? Hugh Laurie!

Hugh would fit as he's about 7 years older than Mark Gatiss which puts him at 17 years older than Benedict.  Would be interesting to see how that story line would work.

Well, the statement of "You know what happened to the OTHER ONE" certainly has left things a little open... because what the heck did that mean??? Yes, i think if there is a 3rd Holmes that he would be older.  By how much is uncertain. However, Sherlock is the baby of the family (and sometimes acts like it).

Agreed the "other one" is so open to interpretation & Sherlock definitely acts like the baby in the family (being the youngest, I can relate to some of his behavior while I had nicer siblings than Mycroft was/is to Sherlock).

I think it was Mark Gatiss who remarked early on about the Mycroft/Sherlock exchange where Sherlock said in ASIP at the end "I wasn't the one who upset her, Mycroft" was referring to some sort of infidelity in the parent's marriage on the part of the father... But nothing has yet come of that.  However, with the parents firmly introduced in S3, I am hoping we will see even more of them in S4, and perhaps the Gatiss comment will come to mean something with "the other one."

That could very well be, couldn't it.

I kind of like the idea that the Holmes family has a dark secret. I mean, there must be a reason why two perfectly nice, loving people like Mr and Mrs Holmes had kids like Mycroft and Sherlock.

I'm pretty fond of the theory that Moriarty is (preferably was) the third brother, and the offspring of an extramarital affair of Sherlock's father. First of all, I don't really want a new character, and also, it would finally lend some sense to the fixation Moriarty has on Sherlock.

Greetings, Shezza! :welcome: Welcome to the forum! I think Hugh Laurie would be brilliant as an older Holmes brother, except I'm sort of hoping it will turn out to be a sister (although I have no idea why I feel that way, it just seems like a fun twist to me I guess.)

I keep wondering how Mycroft rose to his position at such a relatively young age. Brains alone doesn't get you that kind of power, or scientists etc would be running the world, not beauracrats, imo....

At any rate, I keep wondering what Pop Holmes did for a living ... some sort of minor official in the British government, perhaps?  ;) I find it unlikely that he's as "unsmart" as he makes himself out to be.... And I really hate to think of that lovely gentleman as an adulterer, I hope it's something else...... (but what, I can't imagine.....)

Would you accept if Mr. Holmes had a relationship before Mrs. Holmes came into the picture that ended with him being a dad even if he didn't know until after he married Mrs. Holmes?

Oh, sure, why the heck not? I suspect by the time we finally learn the answer, I'll be so happy to just see the show again, I'll accept almost anything. Except the slickback hair, I will protest that to my grave........ :p

I would love Tom as the third sibling.

But I think the age is wrong and I suspect the sibling is dead.

I want the sibling to be dead. Mycroft is more than enough; in my humble opinion, Sherlock does not need another brother (or sister?) to overshadow him. After all, the series is called "Sherlock", not "The Holmes"...

I keep hoping that if I keep posting about Tom somehow it will all magically come true.

Shame it doesn't work like that.

Though at least your Tom fantasy is more realistic than mine!( :embarrassed: )

Maybe one of the future episodes will have some backstory about "the other one"

A backstory/ flashback to the other one could (potentially) have Hiddleston play the other one so the clothing would be altered to match the time period they were discussing depending on the actual age of the other one in that back story.

So there's still some hope sitty & Besley.

Irene as Holmes sister!...........hell no  :comp:

Ewwww.... then Sherlock's attraction to her, whatever it was, and hers to him would be incest, and that would be icky.

I'd love for Tom Hiddleston to be involved. He quite simply has both the distinction and the charisma to fit in as a Holmes brother. And yes, I believe we would be dealing with some sort of flashback or maybe a one-off appearance.

Well, one only has to check Hiddleston's filming schedule to see whether or not he is even available during the time of the S4 shooting.  Somehow I rather doubt it.  He's as fully booked as BC.

And how I hate BC's hectic schedule, lawd... :(

I guess it won't be the case of casting TH but a girl can dream!
