Alright, so curiosity will kill me one day.

I went to find out more about 404 instead of working (obviously) and eventhough I stopped mid-way {because it seems like a rabbit hole that I shouldn't enter (because I could spend years studying about it and then become the expert of 404 just in time when it's no longer a problem and you guys are talking about Forbidden Error 1895)},

here are the three things I found:

1. Add to the list, X-a-n-a-x,

and tidsep0ker (although it seems that the problem lies only with p0ker. Anyway, found that accidentally, it's not even English word, I think, it's probably Swedish or Norwegian)

2. Most explanations given are around this line:

"a 404 error happens when you try to access a resource on a web server (usually a web page) that doesn’t exist. Some reasons for this happening can for example be a broken link, a mistyped URL, or that the webmaster has moved the requested page somewhere else (or deleted it)"

I have absolutely no idea about the connection because we didn't seem to try to access anything except using certain wordings in the post.

Anyway, apparently error 404 is very common so some websites try to make the best of it by making it into informative or fun page, there are whole lot examples out there.

Here are a few:

And this one actually features our Sherl.. and a very smart cat.

3. And! And! Good god! You know what.... After all those useless efforts, apparently our error is not 404 anymore, but 403!!

rsa03n.jpg

(Eta: oh wait, apparently Carol has found out that it had changed from 404 to 403 couple of pages back), but still....

We were demoted without notice!!

tumblr_nsoppw8rsr1tqxsfgo3_r2_400.gif

"403: This error is similar to the 401 error, but note the difference between unauthorized and forbidden. In this case no login opportunity was available. This can for example happen if you try to access a (forbidden) directory on a website."

Hmmmmmm..... so there is a secret stash of forbidden pages somewhere here....

(Okay okay I'm gg back to bored bored boreeeed work!) (If you guys have any idea how much effort I took to make this post solely by phone, you'd be convinced I'm BORED at work. XD)

I need that cat. Get me one. Please?

403? If you say so. I was thinking 404, and assuming they used that number just to cool people. But if 403 is the Forbidden Error, maybe I simply miscopied the error message in the first place?

Added: Nope, it used to say "404 Not Found error," and it now says "403 Forbidden Error." So it's been corrected in the software.

Thanks for X-a-n-a-x. (Yup, 403.). And tidsep0ker. (Never heard of it, but ol' 403 sure don't like any kinda p0ker!)

It even balks at "fireplace p0ker" -- maybe it's been playing Cluedo?

It also balks at "gl@ss sex" (whatever that is). I've updated the list. Our pal Surelock "found" it: http://www.sherlockforum.com/forum/topic/3549-episode-43-the-final-problem/?p=118693

Holy smoke

(Don't ask, don't ask, don't ask)

Ehhh.... what exactly that you guys were talking about to get ehm.. that term?

XD

Apparently it takes "gl@ss sex" as short for "gl@ss sex toys." The truly weird part is, it doesn't care a bit if I say just "sex toys." Guess it's OK to hawk then here as long as they're made of plastic! :P

Good grief, what were you two thinking?

Never mind, I don't want to know.... :p

Some kind of modern looking see-through fire retardant aesthetic wearable contraceptive device that one wears on...

Wait.. oh!.. you don't want to know??

Okay okay, don't banish me to Irene lounge..!

Seriously, have you been in there? Boooooooringggggggg..... we've been saucier right here in this thread. :naughty:

No I haven't.

Wanted to sign in to participate with J.P's auction back then, but too much paperwork (it's actually just a request away but I'm that lazy) :p, well, actually I was in hurry so I didn't.

Not curious anyway, since from the front page I could see that there is no movement whatsoever, the topic count remains the same with one extra reply after...err... 1-2 years? XD

Ex-ACT-ly. So be good or we'll lock you in there with Eurus. :p

Posted

You sure?

In couple of months time you will find two Eurus.

Or..maybe.. in five minutes? :p

And eventually a whole forum full of Euruses. Then we take over the world and order everyone to do nothing but make more episodes of Sherlock. I see no flaw in my plan.

Sounds like a plan.

So I take it as I don't need to be good or behave anyway. :p

Here's part of the original post from this thread, for those of you who wouldn't otherwise know what I'm going to be talking about:

We have recently discovered that the forum software is rejecting posts which contain certain product names -- popular pharmaceuticals, expensive watches, and other items (added: or services) that are apparently suspected of indicating spam activity. Unfortunately, this is nothing that the forum administrators have any control over -- it's built into the software.

When such words are used, the software doesn't even come right out and say, "You can't use that word." It merely generates a generic-looking error message:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /forum/index.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error* was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

* now corrected to "a 403 Forbidden Error"

I've noticed recently that people are able to say "dominatrix" without being chastised by the software (in fact they've been saying it for almost a year without me noticing, since this past February).  So I'm gonna try posting the complete list of formerly forbidden words, a few at a time:

Anal
Animal Video
Casino
Cialis
Cuckold
Degree in radiology
Diet Pills
Dominatrix
drop to the table before

gay sex

glass sex

lesbian sex
penicillin
Poker
Pokery
Prozac
Rolex
Synthroid
Tidsepoker
Viagra
Xanax

.... and yay!  They all work just fine now.  Apparently the forum software has given up on stopping us from marketing Viagra.  ;)

********************

Please note, however, that this presumably has no effect whatsoever on use of the sort of "naughty" words that your parents didn't want you to say.  They're still not allowed on the forum, with the basic rule being that if you wouldn't be allowed to say it on Sherlock, you can't post it here.

Weird.

Why should Rolex be a problem word? Are we missing something here?

Posted

Spammers is why. Whoever wrote this list wanted to nip the "buy fake rolex here, cheap!!!" spambots in the bud, I think. Same with the assorted pharmaceuticals. Others, like the drop table one, are to ward against SQL injections (a type of database attack).

Still waiting for you to post about all these, I'm half curious wtf "glass sex" is and half dreading to find out. ^_^

You must've missed my previous post. "Glass sex" is what happened when Eurus met Moriarty. :p
